Introduction: Anthraquinones are aromatic compounds whose structures are related to anthracene (parent structure: 9,10-dioxoanthracene) for which various methods for their synthesis have been developed. In the past decade (2005-2014), much work has been done regarding anthraquinone chemistry in order to discover new compounds related to this scaffold as anticancer, antibacterial, antidiabetic, antiviral, anti-HCV, antifibrotic, fungicidal and anti-inflammatory agents. Areas covered: This review covers the patents on therapeutic activities of anthraquinones and their derivatives in the years between 2005 and 2014. A large portion of the therapeutic applications that were reported in international patents will be presented and discussed. Although a large number of patents have been registered over the last decade, this review is focused on important patents related to cancer, inflammation, infectious diseases, diabetic conditions and hepatitis C. Expert opinion: The tricyclic planar ring system of anthraquinones displays a wide range of important pharmaceutical properties. By linking active anthraquinone analogs to other important pharmacophores or conjugates such as oximes, N-heterocycles, benzodiazepines or glycosyl ethers, their anticancer potential is enhanced. The ability of anthraquinone analogs to become more prominent as novel pharmaceutical agents may further be enhanced by fusing functionalized heterocyclic rings onto established anthraquinone cores.

Defective nickel zirconium oxide mesoporous bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction and overall water splitting

Maira Sadaqat, Sumaira Manzoor, Salma Aman, Laraib Nisar, Muhammad Najam-Ul-Haq, Afzal Shah, Ahmed M. Shawky, H. Elhosiny Ali, Muhammad Naeem Ashiq, T. A. Taha

Summary: In this study, single-phase zirconium nickel oxide nanospheres with different concentrations of Ni were successfully fabricated for the first time using a sol-gel method. Among these, Zr0.012Ni4.3O0.68 exhibited remarkable OER performance on a glassy carbon electrode, requiring only 294 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm(-2). This performance is attributed to the presence of a large number of oxygen vacancies in the non-stoichiometric compound Zr0.012Ni4.3O0.68.

Satya Kumar Avula, Saeed Ullah, Sobia Ahsan Halim, Ajmal Khan, Muhammad U. Anwar, Rene Csuk, Ahmed Al-Harrasi

Summary: In this study, 26 compounds of substituted quinoline derivatives were synthesized and their alpha-glucosidase inhibition activity was investigated. Most of the synthesized compounds showed good inhibitory activity against alpha-glucosidase, and some exhibited very promising results. Compound 12's structure was confirmed through single crystal X-ray diffraction. The study revealed a new series of substituted quinoline derivatives as potential inhibitors of alpha-glucosidase.

Practical Synthesis and Antifungal Investigation of Drimane Meroterpenoids Enabled by Nickel-Catalyzed Decarboxylative Coupling

Shengxin Sun, Xia Wang, Renei Csuk, Shengkun Li

Summary: Drimane meroterpenoids have attracted attention for their structural diversity and bioactivity, but the lack of an efficient synthetic route has hindered further development. A nickel-catalyzed decarboxylative cross-coupling method has been established to access a variety of drimane meroterpenoids, featuring mild conditions and tolerance for challenging functional groups. This method enables the scalable synthesis of advanced intermediates for late-stage functionalizations, which has led to the discovery of new antifungal leads against Rhizoctonia solani.

A Comprehensive Mechanistic Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Study of Potential Bioactive ((BpA)2bp)Cu/Zn Complexes via Bactericidal Mechanisms against Escherichia coli

Sajid Ali, Nazma Faqir, Falak Naz, Muhammad Ishtiaq Jan, Naeem Khan, Amal Alotaibi, Riaz Ullah

Summary: The study found that complexes 1 and 2 can effectively inhibit the formation of bacterial biofilms and cause damage to the bacterial membrane. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of complexes 1 and 2 were 46.87 +/- 1.822 and 93.75 +/- 1.345 and 47.87 +/- 1.345 and 94.85 +/- 1.466 mu g/mL, respectively. Both complexes also showed good interactions with E. coli DNA. Therefore, complexes 1 and 2 are good antibiofilm agents that can restrict the development of bacterial biofilms on therapeutic implants by disrupting the bacterial membrane and interacting with bacterial DNA.

Summary: This work synthesized a curcumin-based fluorescence-on sensor (P) capable of selectively responding to Ni2+ ions in aqueous solution. P exhibited high selectivity towards Ni(2+) ions with negligible interferences from other metal cations. It had a fast response, sensitive detection limit (LOD = 2 x 10(-10) M), and a high association constant (K = 3.6 x 10(5) M-2) for complex formation with Ni(2+) ions. P could be recovered using EDTA as a chelating agent and showed great potential as a chemosensor for environmental applications.
