The association of changes in body mass index and metabolic parameters between adults with overweight or obesity and their children in a family-based randomized trial (DiOGenes)

Michelle D. Pang, Hulya Yilmaz, Arne Astrup, Ellen E. Blaak, Marleen A. Baak

Summary: This study found a positive association between changes in body mass index of parents and their children during a weight-maintenance family-based dietary intervention. Including parents in family-based dietary approaches for weight management of their children is effective, regardless of the child's weight status.

Weight-loss induced by carbohydrate restriction does not negatively affect health-related quality of life and cognition in people with type 2 diabetes: A randomised controlled trial

Nicole Jacqueline Jensen, Helena Zander Wodschow, Mads Juul Skytte, Amirsalar Samkani, Arne Astrup, Jan Frystyk, Bolette Hartmann, Jens Juul Holst, Thomas Meinert Larsen, Sten Madsbad, Faidon Magkos, Kamilla Woznica Miskowiak, Steen Bendix Haugaard, Thure Krarup, Jorgen Rungby, Mads Norvin Thomsen

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of dietary carbohydrate restriction on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and cognition in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that weight loss improved physical health, while the amount of carbohydrates, protein, and fat in the diet may affect mental health and cognition.

Effects of sleep manipulation on markers of insulin sensitivity: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Nina Sondrup, Anne-Ditte Termannsen, Jane N. Eriksen, Mads F. Hjorth, Kristine Faerch, Lars Klingenberg, Jonas S. Quist

Summary: Poor sleep habits are associated with increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This review and meta-analysis found that sleep manipulation, such as sleep restriction and circadian misalignment, can reduce insulin sensitivity and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. However, rapid eye movement sleep disturbance and sleep fragmentation have no effect on insulin sensitivity.

Empowering consumers to PREVENT diet-related diseases through OMICS sciences (PREVENTOMICS): protocol for a parallel double-blinded randomised intervention trial to investigate biomarker-based nutrition plans for weight loss

Mona Adnan Aldubayan, Kristina Pigsborg, Sophia M. O. Gormsen, Francisca Serra, Mariona Palou, Pedro Mena, Mart Wetzels, Alberto Calleja, Antoni Caimari, Josep Del Bas, Biotza Gutierrez, Faidon Magkos, Mads Fiil Hjorth

Summary: Personalised nutrition has great potential in preventing and treating diet-related diseases, such as obesity. This study aims to compare the health outcomes of a personalised nutritional plan with a standard approach based on general dietary recommendations in subjects with overweight or obesity. The study is a 10-week parallel, double-blinded randomised intervention trial, with the primary outcome being the difference in fat mass change between the personalised and control groups.

Hjorth, Faidon Magkos

Summary: This 10-week clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of personalized dietary plans for individuals with overweight or obesity. The results showed no significant difference in outcomes between the personalized diet group and the control diet group. Both diets resulted in improvements in insulin resistance and lipid profile.

Unprocessed red meat in the dietary treatment of obesity: a randomized controlled trial of beef supplementation during weight maintenance after successful weight loss

Faidon Magkos, Sidse Rasmussen, Mads F. Hjorth, Sarah Asping, Maria Rosenkrans, Anders M. Sjodin, Arne Astrup, Nina R. W. Geiker

Summary: This study found that healthy diets containing small or large amounts of unprocessed beef had similar effects on body weight, energy metabolism, and cardiovascular risk factors during the first 3 months after clinically significant rapid weight loss.

The New Nordic Renal Diet Induces a Pronounced Reduction of Urine Acid Excretion and Uremic Toxins in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients (Stage 3 and 4)

Nikita Misella Hansen, Peder Berg, Marianne Rix, Manan Pareek, Jens Leipziger, Anne -Lise Kamper, Arne Astrup, Mads Vaarby Sorensen, Louise Salomo

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the New Nordic Renal Diet (NNRD) on metabolic acidosis and uremic toxins in patients with moderate CKD. The results showed that one week of NNRD effectively improved metabolic acidosis and reduced urinary excretion of uric acid and uremic toxins. These results provide encouragement for further investigations on the long-term renal protection effects of NNRD in patients with CKD.

Weight loss relapse associated with exposure to perfluoroalkylate substances

Philippe Grandjean, Alessandra Meddis, Flemming Nielsen, Anders Sjodin, Mads F. F. Hjorth, Arne Astrup, Esben Budtz-Jorgensen

Summary: The objective of this study was to test the association between perfluorinated alkylate substance (PFAS) exposures and body weight increases in a dietary intervention study. The results showed that elevated plasma concentrations of PFOA and PFHxS were significantly associated with increased weight gain, exceeding the effects of different diet groups. The findings suggest that obesogenic PFASs may contribute to the obesity pandemic.

Supplementation with inulin-type fructans affects gut microbiota and attenuates some of the cardiometabolic benefits of a plant-based diet in individuals with overweight or obesity

Mona Adnan Aldubayan, Xiaotian Mao, Martin Frederik Laursen, Kristina Pigsborg, Lars H. Christensen, Henrik M. Roager, Dennis S. Nielsen, Mads Fiil Hjorth, Faidon Magkos

Summary: This study found that a high fiber plant-based diet can reduce body weight and improve cardiometabolic health in individuals with obesity. Additionally, the addition of inulin-type fructans (ITF) can alter gut microbiota composition and attenuate some of the realized cardiometabolic benefits.

Summary: A predictive model was developed using machine learning to predict successful weight loss on a New Nordic Diet. The study found that individual responses to weight loss vary and the optimal diet for successful weight loss may differ for different individuals. This research is important for improving precision dietary treatment for obesity.
