Antimicrobial drug resistance mechanisms among Mollicutes

Olga A. Chernova, Vladislav M. Chernov, Alexey A. Mouzykantov, Natalya B. Baranova, Inna A. Edelstein, Rustam Aminov

Summary: Representatives of the Mollicutes class are the smallest, wall-less bacteria capable of independent reproduction. They are widespread in nature, most of them are commensals. Despite limited biosynthetic capabilities, they are highly adaptable and capable of surviving under various stress and extreme conditions.

Acquisition and Spread of Antimicrobial Resistance: A tet(X) Case Study

Rustam Aminov

Summary: Understanding the mechanisms behind the development of antimicrobial resistance is crucial, but monitoring and detection measures have been significantly delayed and focused mainly on bacterial pathogens, missing key events before resistance emerges. Recent developments in antimicrobial resistance may provide valuable insights into the driving mechanisms of resistance evolution.

Metabolomics in antimicrobial drug discovery

Rustam Aminov

Summary: This review highlights the importance of metabolomics in antimicrobial drug discovery and development, showcasing its role in revealing mechanism of action of antimicrobials, identifying new targets, and providing new ways to manage bacterial infections. The combination of metabolomics with bioinformatics tools plays a crucial role in this field.

Molecular Epidemiology and Virulence of Non-Typhoidal Salmonella in Armenia

Anahit Sedrakyan, Zhanna Ktsoyan, Karine Arakelova, Zaruhi Gevorgyan, Magdalina Zakharyan, Shoghik Hakobyan, Alvard Hovhannisyan, Arsen Arakelyan, Rustam Aminov

Summary: This study analysed human isolates of nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica from salmonellosis cases in Armenia from 1996 to 2019. The findings revealed variability and dynamics in the epidemiology of salmonellosis, with a high virulence potential of human NTS isolates circulating in the region.

Antiphospholipid antibody-mediated NK cell cytotoxicity

Gayane Manukyan, Eva Kriegova, Ludek Slavik, Zuzana Mikulkova, Jana Ulehlova, Anush Martirosyan, Tomas Papajik

Summary: Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune thrombophilia characterized by thrombosis and obstetric complications in the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL). Our study aimed to investigate the role of natural killer (NK) cells in early pregnancy loss in APS. We found that aPL can recruit antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) of NK cells, with differences observed between aPL containing antiB2GPI domain 1 (anti-beta 2GPI-D1) antibodies (aPL+/D1+) and those that do not (aPL+/D1-). This suggests that NK cells may play a role in APS-related obstetric complications.
