Context. Radio-loud active galactic nuclei with powerful relativistic jets are thought to be associated with rapidly spinning black holes (BHs). BH spin-up may result from a number of processes, including accretion of matter onto the BH itself, and catastrophic events such as BH-BH mergers. Aims. We study the intriguing properties of the powerful (L-bol similar to 10(47) erg s(-1)) radio-loud quasar 3C 186. This object shows peculiar features both in the images and in the spectra. Methods. We utilize near-IR Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images to study the properties of the host galaxy, and HST UV and Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical spectra to study the kinematics of the source. Chandra X-ray data are also used to better constrain the physical interpretation. Results. HST imaging shows that the active nucleus is off set by 1.3 +/- 0.1 arcsec (i.e. similar to 11 kpc) with respect to the center of the host galaxy. Spectroscopic data show that the broad emission lines are off set by 2140 +/- 390 km s(-1) with respect to the narrow lines. Velocity shifts are often seen in QSO spectra, in particular in high-ionization broad emission lines. The host galaxy of the quasar displays a distorted morphology with possible tidal features that are typical of the late stages of a galaxy merger. Conclusions. A number of scenarios can be envisaged to account for the observed features. While the presence of a peculiar outflow cannot be completely ruled out, all of the observed features are consistent with those expected if the QSO is associated with a gravitational wave (GW) recoiling BH. Future detailed studies of this object will allow us to confirm this type of scenario and will enable a better understanding of both the physics of BH-BH mergers and the phenomena associated with the emission of GW from astrophysical sources.

Summary: A multiwavelength polarization analysis of BL Lacertae suggests that proton-synchrotron radiation does not significantly contribute to its X-ray emission, providing support for a leptonic origin.

Summary: We present the findings of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observation of the Circinus galaxy, which is the closest and brightest Compton-thick active galactic nucleus (AGN). The source exhibits significant polarization in the 2-6 keV range, with the neutral reflector showing a polarization degree of 28 +/- 7 per cent and a polarization angle roughly perpendicular to the radio jet. The polarization of the ionized reflection is not constrained. This detection marks the first X-ray polarization detection in a Seyfert galaxy, providing valuable insights into the geometry of AGNs' circumnuclear regions and confirming predictions of Unification Models.

Does absorption against AGN reveal supermassive black hole accretion?

Tom Rose, B. R. McNamara, F. Combes, A. C. Edge, A. C. Fabian, M. Gaspari, H. Russell, P. Salome, G. Tremblay, G. Ferland

Summary: Galaxies often contain large amounts of molecular gas that influence their evolution. This gas can lead to star formation or fuel active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity and produce strong feedback. By using absorption against radio cores, ALMA has found molecular gas in brightest cluster galaxies moving towards their galaxy's core at high velocities. This paper compares the molecular emission and absorption in these galaxies to determine the location of the absorbing gas and finds two types of absorbers: those aligned with a fraction of the emitting molecular clouds and those close to the AGN in the accretion process. The paper also presents ALMA observations of molecular emission in S555, Abell 2390, RXC J1350.3+0940, and RXC J1603.6+1553, with the latter three having molecular gas masses greater than 10^10 solar masses.

Summary: This study investigates optically selected dual Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and compares them with isolated systems. The analysis reveals that mergers may trigger more luminous AGN. X-ray spectral analysis and comparison with observed X-ray luminosity confirm higher obscuration in AGN pairs. The absorbing material is likely associated with the torus or broad-line regions.

Summary: We investigate the content of plasma matter in the innermost accretion disk/jet in M87* and its relevance to the search for anti-matter signatures in the ngEHT. We consider different emission models and analyze their impact on the positron-to-electron ratio, finding degeneracies between the models and the positron fraction. Our results suggest that a large theoretical image library is necessary to fully understand the trends observed in this study, taking into account various parameters that affect polarimetric images.

Summary: We propose a method to trace the motion of a shearing hot spot near the Sgr A* source using a dynamical image reconstruction algorithm, StarWarps. The hot spot is ejected from a current sheet near the black hole horizon and may shear and diffuse during its orbit in the accretion disk. We use different observational array configurations and make dynamical image reconstructions to track the hot spot's motion. Our analysis shows that the newly added dishes are better at tracing the first phase and part of the second phase compared to the EHT arrays.

Summary: By analyzing the data from the SRG/eROSITA mission, we have successfully constrained the temperature, elemental abundance, and spectral shape of the hot halo emission in the Milky Way. Our study reveals that the circumgalactic medium (CGM) dominates the soft X-ray flux, contributing approximately 47% of the total emission. Additionally, we observe the presence of an extra component likely associated with the Galactic corona and unresolved M dwarf stars.

Unraveling Twisty Linear Polarization Morphologies in Black Hole Images

Gomez, Kazunori Akiyama, Matthew Liska, Lars Hernquist, Grant Tremblay, Mark Vogelsberger, Charles Alcock, Randall Smith, James Steiner, Paul Tiede, Freek Roelofs

Summary: We investigate the physical origin and morphological dependence of twisty patterns of linear polarization in black hole images using general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations. Our results show that the twisty morphology is determined by the magnetic field structure in the emitting region and the dependence on black hole spin is due to changes in the magnetic field geometry caused by frame dragging. Doppler boosting and lensing have subdominant roles, while Faraday rotation only has a significant impact on models with weak magnetic fields. Linear polarization maps can be used as a probe to infer black hole spins based on the underlying magnetic field structure.

Using Machine Learning to Determine Morphologies of z < 1 AGN Host Galaxies in the Hyper Suprime-Cam Wide Survey

Chuan Tian, C. Megan Urry, Aritra Ghosh, Ryan Ofman, Tonima Tasnim Ananna, Connor Auge, Nico Cappelluti, Meredith C. Powell, David B. Sanders, Kevin Schawinski, Dominic Stark, Grant R. Tremblay

Summary: We propose a machine-learning framework for accurately characterizing the morphologies of active galactic nucleus (AGN) host galaxies within z < 1. The framework consists of two parts: PSFGAN for separating host galaxy light from the central point source, and GaMorNet for estimating the dominant morphology. The models built in three redshift bins achieve high prediction accuracy and classification precision, with a noticeable dependency on host galaxy radius and magnitude.

Summary: Scientists serendipitously discovered a narrow linear feature in the Hubble Space Telescope images, which may be a wake formed by the interaction between a supermassive black hole and the circumgalactic medium. The observed line ratios, colors, and morphology are consistent with the interpretation of a rapidly moving ejected black hole triggering star formation. In addition, a fainter and shorter feature, likely shocked gas behind a binary black hole, was also detected.

Summary: X-ray polarization measurements of the Crab nebula and pulsar by the IXPE satellite showed a global toroidal magnetic field with large variations in local polarization, indicating a more complex turbulence distribution than expected. The pulsar's emission was found to be unpolarized, except for significant polarization in the core of the main peak. The nebula exhibited a patchy distribution of turbulence, contradicting simple expectations from numerical models.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the radio emission and gas kinematics of HE 0040-1105 from host galaxy scales to the central few parsecs using multiwavelength observations. We find that HE 0040-1105 has an ionized gas outflow with the largest spatial offset from its nucleus compared to other AGNs in the Close AGN Reference Survey. The alignment between the radio emission and the outflow is consistent with a weak jet morphology rather than diffuse radio emission produced by AGN winds.
