Summary: Evaluating the quality of scientific articles is challenging, with the commonly used journal impact factor not originally designed for this purpose. Technological advances in the early 21st century have revolutionized scientific publication, indicating a need for more sophisticated tools to assess the quality of scientific literature. Usage data, such as the number of full-text downloads, is a new method that can be used to better evaluate the merit of scientific literature.

Summary: This meta-research analysis evaluated the publication profiles, impact, and conflicts of interest disclosures of non-research authors who published over 200 papers in high impact scientific journals. The results found that many prolific authors, particularly in the field of COVID-19, had significant influence without much publication in other indexed literature. Only a few authors disclosed potential conflicts of interest. This raises the need for further debate on the power given to non-researchers in shaping scientific discourse and emphasizes the importance of disclosing potential conflicts of interest.

Summary: The Research Project Grant (R01) is an important grant mechanism used by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and being awarded an R01 grant is often seen as a sign of scientific success. A study tracking R01 grants awarded in 2000 found significant variations in the number of publications and citations over the following 20 years, with metrics showing correlations within grants but reflecting success in different domains. When used together, metrics such as publications, citations, and h-indices provide a more comprehensive understanding of the productivity and long-term impact of funded grants.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between intrathecal morphine and enhanced recovery pathways after cesarean delivery. The results indicate that lower doses provide shorter duration of analgesia and higher pain scores. In contrast, a dose of 250 mcg offers longer-lasting pain relief with similar side effects. Both 150 mcg and 250 mcg doses allow a majority of patients to avoid additional opioid use within 72 hours.
