NMicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs approximately 20-25 nt in length, which play crucial roles through directly binding to corresponding 30 UTR of targeted mRNAs. It has been reported that miRNAs are involved in numerous of diseases, including cancers. Recently, miR-134 has been identified to dysregulate in handles of human cancers, such as lung cancer, glioma, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and so on. Increasing evidence indicates that miR-134 is essential for human carcinoma and participates in tumor cell proliferation, apoptosis, invasion and metastasis, drug resistance, as well as cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Nevertheless, its roles in human cancer are still ambiguous, and its mechanisms are sophisticated as well, referring to a variety of targets and signal pathways, such as STAT5B, KRAS, MAPK/ERK signal pathway, Notch pathway, etc. Herein, we review the crucial roles of miR-134 in scores of human cancers via analyzing latest investigations, which might provide evidence for cancer diagnose, treatment, prognosis, or further investigations.

FTO gene polymorphisms and hepatoblastoma susceptibility among Chinese children

Junzhen Fan, Zhenjian Zhuo, Guoqing Chen, Huizhong Niu, Zhonghua Yang, Jiao Zhang, Yong Li, Suhong Li, Jiwen Cheng, Li Li, Jing He, Xianqiang Wang

Summary: This study found a significant association between certain SNPs of the FTO gene and the risk of hepatoblastoma, particularly rs9939609 T > A, which was associated with a decreased risk. These findings provide clues for further research on the role of the FTO gene in hepatoblastoma.

NSUN2 gene rs13181449 C>T polymorphism reduces neuroblastoma risk

Lei Lin, Changmi Deng, Chunlei Zhou, Xinxin Zhang, Jinhong Zhu, Jiabin Liu, Haiyan Wu, Jing He

Summary: In this study, the association between NSUN2 rs13181449 polymorphism and neuroblastoma susceptibility was investigated in a Chinese population. The results showed that the rs13181449 polymorphism was significantly associated with a reduced risk of neuroblastoma. Further analysis revealed that this protective effect was observed in children with age >18 months, boys, and those with early INSS stages.

PTBP2-mediated alternative splicing of IRF9 controls tumor-associated monocyte/macrophage chemotaxis and repolarization in neuroblastoma progression

Jue Tang, Jing He, Huiqin Guo, Huiran Lin, Meng Li, Tianyou Yang, Hai-Yun Wang, Di Li, Jiabin Liu, Le Li, Huimin Xia, Zhenjian Zhuo, Lei Miao

Summary: This study revealed the potential predictive role of PTBP2 in thoracic neuroblastoma (NB) patients. It showed that PTBP2 induced chemotactic activity in tumor-associated monocytes and macrophages, inhibiting NB growth and dissemination. This work highlighted the pathological and biological role of PTBP2 in NB development and predicted a favorable prognosis in thoracic NB.

Functional polymorphisms of the TET1 gene increase the risk of neuroblastoma in Chinese children

Jiaming Chang, Lei Lin, Chunlei Zhou, Xinxin Zhang, Tianyou Yang, Haiyan Wu, Yan Zou, Jing He

Summary: Common genetic mutations are absent in neuroblastoma, but TET1 gene polymorphisms are significantly associated with increased neuroblastoma risk. The rs3998860 G > A and rs12781492 A > C polymorphisms are closely related to increased risk, and they have an impact on the expression of STOX1 mRNA. Further research is required for the potential mechanism and therapeutic prospects in neuroblastoma.

miR-100 rs1834306 a > G polymorphism decreases neuroblastoma risk in Chinese children

Yufeng Han, Jiaming Chang, Lei Lin, Chunlei Zhou, Jinhong Zhu, Haiyan Wu, Jing He, Wen Fu

Summary: This study found that the miR-100 rs1834306 A > G polymorphism is associated with neuroblastoma susceptibility, and this polymorphism reduces the risk of neuroblastoma, especially for mediastinal tumors. More large-scale case-control studies are needed to verify this conclusion.

Inhibition of STAT3 signaling as critical molecular event in HUC-MSCs suppressed Glioblastoma Cells

Mingming Wang, Yufu Zhang, Min Liu, Yuna Jia, Jing He, Xiangrong Xu, Haiyan Shi, Yunqing Zhang, Jing Zhang, Yusi Liu

Summary: This study investigated the impact of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (HUC-MSC) supernatants on glioblastoma (GBM) cell lines. Results showed that HUC-MSCs supernatants inhibited cell proliferation, migration, and invasion while promoting apoptosis. These effects were mediated through the IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway.
