Summary: This study investigated the predictors of psychotic relapses in Brazilian patients with FEP. Findings showed that 29.2% of the patients experienced relapse after FEP, with depression and high-EOI in the family environment being predictors of psychotic relapses in this population. The study expands knowledge about the cultural specificity of EOI and the role of depression in psychotic relapse.

Summary: MDD is characterized by persistent depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure in previously enjoyable activities, recurrent thoughts of death, and physical and cognitive symptoms. It is a complex disorder caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, psychological and biological factors. Treatment involves pharmacological therapy with antidepressant medications, psychotherapy or a combination of both, and other biological therapies may be considered for severe and/or treatment-resistant cases.

Summary: This study found that nearly 9% of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) in psychiatric outpatient clinics have video polysomnography (vPSG)-confirmed rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (RBD). Patients with comorbid MDD+RBD often have deficits in color vision and olfaction, as well as a higher probability of prodromal Parkinson's disease.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between depressive symptoms and sleep quality in medical staff who had contracted COVID-19. The findings showed a high prevalence of depressive symptoms and insomnia among healthcare workers, with a significant positive correlation between sleep quality and depression. The study suggests the implementation of interventions in epidemic environments to reduce the vulnerability of healthcare workers.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of depressive disorders and associated demographic characteristics in the general adult population in Shandong, based on data from the largest epidemiological survey conducted in 2015. The adjusted prevalence of depressive disorders in the last month was 4.86%, with major depressive disorder, dysthymia, and unspecified depressive disorder having prevalence rates of 2.32%, 1.78%, and 0.75%, respectively. The study also found that 40.35% of depression patients had moderate or severe functional impairment, and only 10.65% had visited a psychiatric service.

Summary: This study assessed and compared the changes in disability scores associated with Bipolar Depression (BD) and Unipolar Depression (UD) over 1 year. The findings showed that disability in psychiatric disorders occurs equally in both BD and UD, and tends to improve over time, although the level of improvement may differ. Disability does not always correspond to the severity of illness. These factors should be considered when certifying disability.

Summary: Subthreshold depression is a condition that significantly impacts quality of life and increases the risk of developing major depressive disorder. Through a systematic search and analysis of 15 studies, it was found that non-pharmacological interventions have a significant effect in preventing the onset of MDD and improving depressive symptoms. These interventions were particularly effective in general adult populations, during short-term follow-up periods, among pregnant women, and in universal prevention programs. Timely detection and treatment of subthreshold depression is feasible and important in effectively delaying or preventing the onset of major depressive disorder.

Summary: This study analyzed comprehensive measurement data of 109 VOCs collected from 17 monitoring stations around petrochemical industrial parks in Taiwan from 2015 to 2018. The results identified six VOCs, including 1,3-butadiene, benzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, chloroform, vinyl chloride, and acrylonitrile, with more than 50% of their emissions attributed to petrochemical industrial parks. This integrated approach can assist regulatory agencies in proposing effective control strategies to reduce the health risk associated with high-concern VOC emissions.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics and transmission of pollutants in hospital operation rooms (ORs) through on-site measurements and numerical simulations. The results show that gaseous pollutants have lower air exchange rates (AERs) compared to particulate pollutants, and the AER of total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) is higher than that of carbon dioxide (CO2). The emission factors (EF) of surgical smoke particles vary depending on the surgical procedure. Coarse particles are primarily influenced by drag forces, resulting in lower AER values. Additionally, smaller particles exhibit lower AER values, potentially due to stronger Brownian motion. The combination of measurement and simulation analysis allows for the evaluation of lung deposited surface area (LDSA) concentrations, providing accurate exposure concentrations for health risk assessments.

Summary: The currently used air quality index (AQI) is criticized for its inability to capture the additive effects of air pollution on health risks and reflect non-threshold concentration-response relationships. In this study, we propose the air quality health index (AQHI) based on daily air pollution-mortality associations and compare its validity in predicting daily mortality and morbidity risks with the existing AQI.
