Performance indicators allow for the objective quantification of performance, however, limited PI research for professional rugby league exists. Therefore, this paper assessed 24 relative PIs (home value minus away) from all 27 rounds of the 2012, 2013 and 2014 European Super League seasons, collected by Opta, amounting to 567 matches. Backwards logistic (match outcome) and linear (points difference) regression models were used alongside exhaustive Chi-Square Automatic Interaction Detection decision trees to identify performance indicators (PIs) and key performance indicators. Teams had a higher chance of winning and would gain more points when they scored first (OR = 1.6, beta = 2.4) and increased completed sets (OR = 1.2, beta = 1.2) by one unit. Conversely, teams had a lower chance of winning when they increased scoots (OR = 0.9, beta = -0.2). However, some PIs which were thought to be important (as identified by previous literature) were removed from the analysis thus calling into question the appropriateness of stepwise methods. Future research may consider utilising dimension reduction techniques when analysing large data-sets that encompass multiple variables.

Summary: The role of strength and conditioning coaches has evolved with the influx of data, requiring them to possess skills in data analysis and understand the validity of statistical terms. This review is divided into two parts, discussing the importance of null hypothesis significance testing, p values, error rates in the first part, and introducing effect sizes, measures of variability, and confidence intervals in the second part for reporting group-based changes in performance-based sports.

Summary: Today's strength and conditioning coaches need to expand their skill set to include data analysis and understand concepts such as p-values, effect sizes, and confidence intervals for reporting group-based changes in performance-based sports. This article provides worked examples to help readers better understand these concepts.

Summary: This study is the first to report the overall demands of professional soccer players in the English Championship, showing that whole match demands are lower than ball-in-play demands and there are differences in match demands at different time intervals. Player positions do not have a significant impact on match demands.

Summary: This study explored the use of debriefing in boxing through interviews with experienced coaches and professional boxers. The findings emphasized the importance of using data, video, and integrating performance analysis to provide comprehensive feedback and maximize learning opportunities. It was also highlighted that establishing an open and honest relationship and creating a safe space for athletes to actively engage in the debriefing process are crucial. The length of the debriefing session did not seem to affect overall engagement.

Performance analysis practice within Olympic and Paralympic sports: A comparison of coach and analyst experiences

Scott B. Nicholls, Nic James, Julia Wells, Nimai Parmar

Summary: This study investigated the agreement between coaches and performance analysts in the delivery of performance analysis in Olympic and Paralympic environments. The results demonstrated clear consensus on the importance and provision of full video. However, coaches placed greater emphasis on coaching philosophy, training goals, and discussions with athletes, while analysts were less aware of these factors. Time emerged as a potential barrier for effective communication.
