Summary: In this study, the purified human PDX1 fusion protein was found to inhibit migration and proliferation of gastric cancer cells, and induce apoptosis in these cells. In pancreatic ductal cancer cells, the application of PDX1 protein induced insulin gene expression. These results demonstrate the biological activity of recombinant human PDX1 fusion protein on gastric and pancreatic cancer cells and its usefulness in elucidating its function in different cellular processes.

Summary: Ring opening polymerization (ROP) of epsilon-caprolactone (CL) was conducted at 160 degrees C using an initiator (dye) and a catalyst (MnO2) under nitrogen atmosphere. The synthesized fluorescent poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) with dye end capping showed hydrophobicity and suitability for ultrasound accelerated drug release.

Summary: To overcome the disadvantages of hydroxyapatite nanocrystals (HAPN) in the development of biodegradable nanocomposites, a chemical grafting method was used to modify the surface of HAPN by grafting three-arms star-shaped poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (SPCL) onto the nanoparticles. The modified SPCL-g-HAPN showed resistance to fibrinogen adsorption and had a heterogeneous topology. In vitro biological studies demonstrated that SPCL-g-HAPN scaffolds had better cellular proliferation compared to pure HAPN or SPCL materials.

Summary: Commercial point-of-care tests are not accurate enough for detecting and differentiating multiple non-falciparum species in regions with low-level malaria infections. A 5-plex chemiluminescent assay shows excellent detection capability for Plasmodium falciparum, but performs suboptimal for other species, with significant cross-reactivity with Plasmodium knowlesi.

Summary: This study investigates the potential of highly conserved fish hepcidin protein, HepTH1-5, as a replacement for human hepcidin and as a therapeutic agent for targeting the tumor suppressor protein p53. The authors found that HepTH1-5 can stably bind to ferroportin and activate p53's function, potentially involving the apoptosis signaling pathway in response to DNA damage.

Summary: Vimentin, a cytoskeletal protein, acts as a negative regulator of IFN-I production upon viral infection by disrupting the interactions of TBK1-IRF3 and IKK epsilon-IRF3. Knockout of vimentin suppresses encephalomyocarditis virus replication in mice, revealing its antiviral function.

Summary: IGFBP5 regulates the balance between Th17 and Treg cells by inhibiting Th17 differentiation and promoting Treg differentiation, alleviating colitis severity in mice models. In addition, IGFBP5 can suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines and its function can be inhibited by ERK or JNK pathway inhibitors.

Summary: This study found that PKC epsilon is significantly overexpressed in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and is associated with reduced complete remission induction and disease-free survival. Additionally, PKC epsilon overexpression confers resistance to the chemotherapeutic agent daunorubicin by upregulating the expression of the efflux pump P-GP.

Summary: This study demonstrates that PRMT1-mediated methylation of HBP1 at R378 decreases its protein stability, promoting tumor metastasis and growth. Additionally, GSN is identified as a novel target gene of HBP1. Methylation of HBP1 downregulates GSN levels, leading to actin cytoskeleton remodeling and tumor progression.

Summary: The study found that serum levels of selenoprotein P (SeP) are negatively correlated with brown adipose tissue (BAT) activity. Physiological cold exposure downregulates the expression of Selenop in BAT. Selenop knockout mice have higher rectal temperatures and UCP1 sulfenylation during cold exposure. Treatment with SeP in brown adipocytes reduces NA-induced mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by upregulating glutathione peroxidase 4, impairing cellular thermogenesis. A high-fat/high-sucrose diet increases serum SeP levels and diminishes NA-induced thermogenesis in BAT-Selenop knockout mice. Therefore, SeP acts as an intrinsic factor inducing reductive stress and impairing thermogenesis in BAT, making it a potential therapeutic target for obesity and diabetes.

Summary: This study explores the role of Murine Double Minute 2 (MDM2) in adipose tissue and its association with nutritional status. The overexpression of MDM2 is found to be linked to poor nutritional status, leading to weight gain, insulin resistance, and decreased energy expenditure. Additionally, chronic high-fat diet exposure causes dysfunction in adipose tissue and hepatic steatosis. The study suggests that MDM2 interacts with STEAP4 and inhibits its expression through degradation. The restoration of STEAP4 improves adipose tissue function and hepatic steatosis.

Summary: Pulmonary fibrosis, a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in fibroproliferative disorders like systemic sclerosis and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, involves overexpression of IGFBP-5. This study utilized a transgenic model to demonstrate the functional role of IGFBP-5 in fibrosis development, showing that transgenic mice expressing human IGFBP-5 could serve as a useful animal model for examining IGFBP-5 function in vivo.

Summary: This study reveals that the RNA-binding protein CSDE1 enables oncogene-induced senescence (OIS) in mouse keratinocytes. They identified two molecular mechanisms by which CSDE1 promotes OIS and showed that depletion of YBX1 can rescue senescence and uncouple proliferation arrest from the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP).
