Summary: This study investigated the association between preoperative inflammatory markers and postoperative delirium (POD) in patients undergoing lumbar spinal fusion surgery (LSFS). The analysis of 11 years' worth of data showed that increased levels of inflammatory markers, particularly the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), were associated with the development of POD. These findings suggest that a proinflammatory state may be a potential pathological mechanism of POD.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed clinical and survival data of 448 patients with colorectal cancer who underwent surgical resection, and found that the preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were negatively correlated with overall survival, while lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) was positively correlated with overall survival. Multivariate analysis showed that an increase in NLR was associated with increased risk of death, while a decrease in LMR was associated with reduced risk of death. Therefore, preoperative inflammatory markers NLR, PLR, and LMR are associated with the overall survival of postoperative colorectal cancer patients.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the role and predictive effects of preoperative inflammation on the primary outcomes after valvular cardiac surgery. The results showed that there was a significant association between preoperative inflammation and adverse outcomes after heart valve surgery. CRP level >5 mg/L effectively predicted postoperative heart failure, and NLR >3.5 had a good predictive effect on all-cause mortality within 30 days after surgery.

Summary: Preoperative inflammatory biomarkers may serve as predictors of postoperative complications after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). CRP levels were significantly associated with postoperative complications and abdominal collections, while preoperative derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) was a strong predictor of abdominal collection. The combination of CRP and dNLR further increased the predictive positive value.

Summary: This study suggests that postoperative changes in inflammation-based prognostic markers are more accurate in predicting overall survival and recurrence-free survival in patients with stage III CRC. The study found that patients with a normalised inflammatory state had better prognosis compared to those with persistently elevated inflammatory state.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the predictive value of preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) for morbidity and mortality after surgery and determine the optimal threshold for NLR. The results showed that elevated preoperative NLR was significantly associated with higher in-hospital mortality and ICU admission after surgery. The predictive value of high NLR was confirmed in multiple surgical subgroups, and a NLR threshold of 3.6 provided good prognostic value.

Summary: This study analyzed data from 991 ovarian cancer patients and found that the lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR) and platelet to neutrophil ratio (PNR) were independent prognostic indicators of ovarian cancer. In contrast, the platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) had limited prognostic value. In conclusion, LMR and PNR are superior prognostic indicators in ovarian cancer.

Summary: In patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma treated with surgery and postoperative radiotherapy, a low neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was the only independently favorable marker for overall survival (OS) and distant control (DC). Other preoperative complete blood count parameters and cell ratios did not show prognostic significance. High NLR was identified as a significant adverse risk factor in high-risk patients.

Summary: This study investigated the prognostic value of postoperative inflammatory indicators and the potential improvement of predictive performance by combining preoperative and postoperative indicators. The results showed that the combined model had higher prognostic efficacy than individual models and traditional clinical staging systems at 2 and 3 years, suggesting the importance of postoperative inflammatory indicators in predicting prognosis.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) in evaluating postoperative pain in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). The results showed a positive correlation between postoperative monocyte, neutrophils, and visual analog scale (VAS) resting and cough levels in the early postoperative period. There was no significant correlation between preoperative and postoperative NLR, PLR, and LMR values and VAS rest and cough values. A negative correlation was found between the change in postoperative LMR value and the VAS rest and cough values in the early postoperative period compared to the preoperative period. The researchers believe that further comprehensive studies on this topic will greatly contribute to the objective criteria in postoperative pain evaluation.

Summary: This study investigated the healing time and potential factors associated with the healing time of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) after distal pancreatectomy (DP). The study found that the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was the only factor independently associated with the healing time of POPF. Patients with a lower neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio had significantly shorter healing times for POPF after DP.

Summary: This study found that high expression of DKK3 in patients with GBM is associated with increased immunosuppressive response and decreased antitumoral immunity. High DKK3 expression is also correlated with poor prognosis and disease progression in GBM patients. The identification of navitoclax as an agent with potent activity against GBM cell lines with high DKK3 expression suggests that DKK3 could be a therapeutic target in GBM.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the Korean adult population, regardless of demographic or lifestyle conditions. This longitudinal follow-up study included 15,756 individuals with CKD and 63,024 matched controls aged ≥40 years. After adjusting for various factors, CKD was significantly associated with a 1.14-fold increased likelihood of developing AD. This highlights the importance of frequent AD screening and management for patients with CKD.

Summary: This study highlights the significant role of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in breast cancer biology and provides compelling evidence of their impact on patient outcomes and treatment response. The presence of CAFs is correlated with young age, lymphatic invasion, and perineural invasion, and is associated with critical processes such as the epithelial-mesenchymal transition and immune modulation. CAF-targeted therapies have the potential to enhance the efficacy of certain anticancer drugs, including ARRY-520, ispinesib-mesylate, paclitaxel, and docetaxel. Integrating CAF presence with machine-learning improves survival prediction, and CAFs are independent prognostic markers for worse disease-specific survival and disease-free survival in breast cancer patients.
