Summary: The abuse of antibiotics has led to bacterial infections becoming a serious global health threat. In this study, an acid-enhanced dual-modal antibacterial strategy based on zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF8)-derived nanozyme was developed. This strategy integrates the bactericidal capabilities of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Zn2+ release, and further enhances the overall antibacterial performance by creating an acidic environment.

Summary: The study found that combining sodium hydroxide with tannin can significantly enhance the dispersing ability of tannin, thereby altering its deflocculation mechanism on kaolinite. This shift is attributed to two aspects: the transformation of tannin chemical structure and the modification of kaolinite by sodium hydroxide.

Summary: A chitosan-based bio-adsorbent (DCTS-TA) was successfully synthesized for the recovery of Au(III) from wastewater, which can increase resource utilization and reduce environmental pollution. The maximum adsorption capacity for Au(III) was 1146.59 mg/g at pH 3.0, fitting well with the Langmuir model. The adsorption process involved electrostatic interaction, chelation, and redox reaction, and the presence of other metal ions did not significantly affect the adsorption efficiency.

Summary: The influence of thermal cycling and mechanical loading aging on fracture resistance and wear behavior of different chairside CAD/CAM premolar crowns was investigated. Glass-ceramic CAD/CAM crowns showed significantly higher fracture resistance than resin composite crowns. A 5-year TCML aging did not affect the fracture resistance of CAD/CAM crowns, but it produced larger wear tracks in resin nanoceramics than in other materials.

Summary: Bio-super engineering plastic using biomass-derived isosorbide based poly(arylene ether ketone) (IK) is important for sustainable development. Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were used as fillers to enhance the mechanical properties of IK. Adding 0.05 wt% CNF increased elongation and acted as a plasticizer, while 0.1 wt% CNF increased both tensile strength and elongation, improving the tensile toughness by up to two-fold through interaction between the matrix and filler. Overall, the addition of CNFs has the potential to improve the mechanical properties of IK, making it suitable for various sustainable applications.

Summary: Membrane-based wastewater reclamation is a method to address water scarcity. However, irreversible biofouling is a challenging issue that affects the efficiency of the forward-osmosis membrane process. In this study, fouling proteins were identified by analyzing the microbiome and proteome of wastewater extracellular polymeric substances. The IGLSSLPR peptide, belonging to a PilZ domain-containing protein, was found to promote bacterial attachment when immobilized on the membrane surface but inhibit it when dissolved.

Summary: This study investigated the association between dental diseases, oral hygiene care, and the incidence of heart failure (HF) in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that an increased number of missing teeth was associated with a higher risk of HF, while regular dental cleaning and frequent toothbrushing were associated with a decreased risk of HF. The presence of dental diseases increased the risk of HF, but good oral hygiene care further reduced the risk of HF.

Summary: Numerous biological systems contain membrane-less vesicle-like compartments, and this study demonstrates the formation of such structures using coacervation as the driving force. The addition of bhBMP-2 to GG1234 simple coacervates under acidic conditions leads to a phase transition from spherical simple coacervates to vesicular condensates, resulting in the formation of multiphasic vesicle-like compartments with a gel-like outer shell. A potential mechanism for the formation of these biomolecular structures is proposed.
