Cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths worldwide. The agents capable of causing damage to genetic material are known as genotoxins and, according to their mode of action, are classified into mutagens, carcinogens or teratogens. Genotoxins are involved in the pathogenesis of several chronic degenerative diseases including hepatic, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, chronic inflammation and ageing. In recent decades, researchers have found novel bioactive phytocompounds able to counteract the effects of physical and chemical mutagens. Several studies have shown potential antigenotoxicity in a variety of fruits. In this review (Part 1), we present an overview of research conducted on some fruits grapefruit, cranberries, pomegranate, guava, pineapple, and mango) which are frequently consumed by humans, as well as the analysis of some phytochemicals extracted from fruits and yeasts which have demonstrated antigenotoxic capacity in various tests, including the Ames assay, sister chromatid exchange, chromosomal aberrations, micronucleus and comet assay.

Differential Antinociceptive Efficacy of Peel Extracts and Lyophilized Juices of Three Varieties of Mexican Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) in the Formalin Test

Jose Antonio Guerrero-Solano, Mirandeli Bautista, Josue Vidal Espinosa-Juarez, Luis Alfonso Moreno-Rocha, Gabriel Betanzos-Cabrera, Liana Claudia Salanta, Minarda De la O. Arciniega, Elena G. Olvera-Hernandez, Osmar Antonio Jaramillo-Morales

Summary: Pharmacological treatment of pain often leads to undesirable effects, so it is important to explore natural, safe, and effective alternatives. Pomegranate has been used as a preventive and therapeutic agent for its antinociceptive effect, and different parts of the fruit display unique pharmacological activities. This study evaluated the antinociceptive effect of pomegranate extracts and juices from three varieties, and found that they had promising pharmacodynamic properties for the treatment of pain.

A Mini-Review of Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli with a Specific Target on the Virulence Factors Controlled by the AggR Master Regulator

Jeannett Alejandra Izquierdo-Vega, Rubi Joseline Castillo-Juarez, Manuel Sanchez-Gutierrez, Miguel A. Ares, Miguel A. de la Cruz

Summary: Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) strains cause severe diarrhea outbreaks globally and are commonly resistant to antibiotics. The characteristic adherence pattern of stacked bricks on the intestinal epithelium depends on a plasmid called aggregative adhesion plasmid (pAA), which codes for a regulatory protein named AggR. AggR acts as a master regulator, transcribing and activating the main virulence genes in EAEC.

Polyphenols as potential enhancers of stem cell therapy against neurodegeneration

Diana Rodriguez-Vera, Antonio Abad-Garcia, Nancy Vargas-Mendoza, Rodolfo Pinto-Almazan, Eunice Farfan-Garcia, Jose Morales-Gonzalez, Marvin Soriano-Ursua

Summary: The potential of polyphenols for treating chronic-degenerative diseases, especially neurodegenerative diseases, is attractive but still subject to debate regarding the optimal polyphenol selection, mechanisms of action, and efficacy. This review compiles and discusses the basics and advances in the field, as well as provides suggestions for using natural and synthetic polyphenols alone or in combination with stem cell assays. Polyphenols can induce various responses in stem cells, offering insights into neurodegeneration. Additionally, polyphenols are being explored as innovative therapies for neurodegenerative diseases and related metabolic disorders. Flavonoids are suggested as the best natural polyphenols due to their ameliorative effects, but other polyphenols are also being investigated. While limitations in bioactivity hinder their conventional use, some natural polyphenols and derivatives show promise for improvement based on their induced effects. Current findings suggest that polyphenols can enhance stem cell therapy against targeted diseases.
