Prevention strategies to reduce future impact of low back pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Tarcisio F. de Campos, Chris G. Maher, Joel T. Fuller, Daniel Steffens, Stephanie Attwell, Mark J. Hancock

Summary: This study evaluates the effectiveness of prevention strategies in reducing the future impact of low back pain, finding that exercise programs and a combination of exercise and education programs can effectively reduce the intensity of future LBP and associated disability. Further high-quality RCTs are needed to assess the impact of prevention programs on future quality of life and workability.

Distribution and prevalence of musculoskeletal pain co-occurring with persistent low back pain: a systematic review

Cecilie K. Overas, Melker S. Johansson, Tarcisio F. de Campos, Manuela L. Ferreira, Bard Natvig, Paul J. Mork, Jan Hartvigsen

Summary: Co-occurring musculoskeletal pain is common among people with persistent low back pain, with axial, extremity, and multi-site pain being the main categories. Studies from high-income countries showed that females report more co-occurring pain than males, and those with more disability are more likely to experience co-occurring pain. There is a need for standardized measurement methods to better understand the relationship between different types of pain and persistent low back pain.

Clinical Course of Pain and Function Following Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Systematic Review and Meta-Regression

Said Mohamad Sayah, Sascha Karunaratne, Paula R. Beckenkamp, Mark Horsley, Mark J. Hancock, David J. Hunter, Robert D. Herbert, Tarcisio F. de Campos, Daniel Steffens

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive investigation on over 59,000 patients undergoing TKA, finding that the recovery of pain and function in the first year postoperatively is large and rapid but incomplete. However, at 10 years postoperatively, the gains in pain scores may still remain while there is an improvement in function.

Walking, Cycling, and Swimming for Nonspecific Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review With Meta-analysis

Natasha C. Pocovi, Tarcisio F. de Campos, Chung-Wei Christine Lin, Dafna Merom, Anne Tiedemann, Mark J. Hancock

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness of walking/running, cycling, or swimming for treating or preventing nonspecific low back pain (LBP). The results showed that walking/running was slightly more effective than minimal/no intervention for treating chronic/recurrent LBP, but less effective than alternate interventions. There were limited conclusions regarding cycling and swimming due to the scarcity of trials.

Prognosis of a new episode of low-back pain in a community inception cohort

Tarcisio F. de Campos, Tatiane M. da Silva, Christopher G. Maher, Natasha C. Pocovi, Mark J. Hancock

Summary: This study investigated the prognosis of an acute episode of low back pain in a community inception cohort. The majority of episodes of low back pain recovered rapidly (median of 5 days) and more quickly than typically reported for clinical populations. Approximately 40% of the participants sought care.

Orthostatic Intolerance-Type Events Following Hip and Knee Arthroplasty A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Tarcisio F. De Campos, Nick Vertzyas, Mitch Wolden, Deshitha Hewawasam, Ben Douglas, Christopher McIllhatton, Jessica Hili, Chloe Molnar, Michael I. Solomon, Gregory C. Gass, Sean F. Mungovan

Summary: Orthostatic intolerance (OI)-type events are common during the acute hospital stay following hip and knee arthroplasty, and 4 risk factors have been reported for OI-type events. However, there is a limited understanding of the incidence and assessment of OI-type events. High-quality prospective cohort studies are needed to determine the incidence and risk factors of OI-type events reliably.

Recurrence of low back pain: A difficult outcome to predict. Development and validation of a multivariable prediction model for recurrence in patients recently recovered from an episode of non-specific low back pain

N. C. Pocovi, P. Kent, C. -W. C. Lin, S. D. French, T. F. de Campos, T. da Silva, M. J. Hancock

Summary: This article aims to develop and validate a simple tool to predict the probability of low back pain recurrence in patients within 3 or 12 months after recovery. The study found that the prediction model had low accuracy and is not recommended for clinical practice.
