Summary: The study revealed that among patients with FEV1 < 40% predicted, there are lower rates of lung transplant and an increased risk of death without lung transplant for US patients compared with Canadian patients. This difference is more significant among US patients with Medicaid/Medicare health insurance and nonwhite patients, suggesting potential disparities in access to lung transplants among vulnerable populations.

Summary: This study monitored the time of bacterial re-colonization in lung transplant patients with cystic fibrosis and found that 70% of patients were re-colonized by bacteria after 2 years, with no observed impact on survival rates from re-colonization or different bacterial species.

Summary: The study thoroughly characterized the lower airway microbiome in pre-school children with CF, finding that while the CF lung microbiome is broadly similar to that in non-CF children in terms of alpha diversity at an early age, several key genera were significantly differentially abundant between the CF and non-CF groups. CF diagnosis explained only a small amount of variation between the microbiomes, and there were distinct patterns of microbial abundance changes with age in CF and non-CF populations.

Summary: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a major risk factor for cervical cancer, and transplant recipients have a higher risk of HPV complications. A retrospective study on adult female cystic fibrosis (CF) lung transplant recipients found that 35.3% had abnormal pap smear results, including refractory anogenital warts, vulvectomy, and cervical cancer. The study also revealed that lung transplant recipients had a higher likelihood of cervical dysplasia compared to the control group, emphasizing the importance of HPV vaccination to prevent future morbidity and mortality.

Summary: This study aimed to explore bone health outcomes in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) following lung transplantation (LTx). The results revealed that CF patients had lower baseline bone mineral density (BMD) and a higher risk of fractures after LTx compared to non-CF patients. These findings emphasize the importance of prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in CF patients before and after LTx.

Summary: This study evaluated outcomes in cystic fibrosis patients who underwent lung transplant at a transplant center with an accredited Cystic Fibrosis Care Center. The results showed that patients who underwent lung transplant at a hospital with an accredited CFCC had higher graft survival and a lower need for re-transplantation compared to those at non-accredited CFCC hospitals.

Summary: This study explored the perceptions and experiences of rehabilitation before and after lung transplantation in adults with cystic fibrosis. Structured rehabilitation was found to provide multiple benefits, and a hybrid model was preferred going forward. Future optimization of tele-rehabilitation processes and increased evidence to support exercise in the continuum of CF care are needed.

Summary: Significant advancements in cystic fibrosis (CF) care have improved survival and quality of life, but many individuals still struggle with advanced cystic fibrosis lung disease (ACFLD) and the complexities of ongoing disease progression. Recent guidelines focus on enhancing care for ACFLD patients through improvements in medical, psychosocial, palliative, and lung transplant-related care.

Summary: People with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), particularly those who have undergone solid organ transplantation, have been prioritized for SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. This study investigates the antibody response of CF patients who have received liver or lung transplants and compares it to published data of non-CF solid organ transplant recipients. The results show varying response rates, with liver transplant recipients exhibiting a better immune response compared to lung transplant recipients. These findings highlight the importance of considering the distinct immune responses among CF patients with different organ transplant backgrounds and emphasize the need for booster vaccinations.

Summary: Lung transplantation is a critical therapeutic option for people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) and has shown overall success. Advancements in the field of cystic fibrosis, including the identification of the CF gene and CFTR modulator therapy, have improved the care and life expectancy of PwCF. However, lung transplantation remains essential as not all patients benefit from CFTR modulators and CF is still a progressive disease. This review discusses the current knowledge of lung transplantation in PwCF and the challenges associated with its implementation.

Summary: The analysis evaluated perioperative outcomes of surgical resection following neoadjuvant treatment with chemotherapy plus nivolumab in resectable stage IIIA non-small-cell lung cancer. Results showed that surgical resection after chemotherapy plus nivolumab was safe, with high rates of complete resection, downstaging, and major pathological response. The perioperative morbidity and mortality rates were comparable to previous reports, indicating the feasibility of a minimally invasive approach.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the incidence of primary lung cancer in the native lung and its impact on survival in patients undergoing single lung transplantation (SLT). The occurrence of lung cancer in the native lung was found to be a frequent and devastating complication in patients with COPD after SLT, which might negatively affect long-term survival.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed patients who received lung transplantation between 2007 and 2019, and found that despite the advances in lung transplantation practice, the incidence and risk factors for airway complications have not changed. Graft dysfunction, infected environment, and the need for prolonged mechanical ventilation remain major risk factors for airway complications.

Summary: Lung transplant recipients are at high risk of developing malignancies, with de novo lung cancers being the most lethal, especially in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease receiving single lung transplants. This study emphasizes the importance of considering the prevalence and impact of malignancies on long-term survival in lung transplant recipients.

Summary: Repeated exposure to antigens through inhalation is the main cause of hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a type of interstitial pneumonia. This study examined the outcomes of lung transplantation in patients with hypersensitivity pneumonitis, revealing a high survival rate and suggesting that these patients are good candidates for lung transplantation.
