Summary: Sponsored by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards, a consensus-driven process using a modified Delphi methodology was conducted to determine a set of clinical indicators for cancer service provision in Australia. After a series of meetings and deliberations, a final set of 16 indicators was established by a multidisciplinary steering group and stakeholder group. This inaugural cancer clinical indicator set aims to drive continual improvement in cancer care provision across Australia and internationally.

Summary: The study revealed a sex-specific prognostic effect of TANs in gastric and esophageal adenocarcinoma, with a favorable impact observed in the chromosomal instable subtype of gastric cancer and female patients. This suggests that TANs may play a significant role in the tumor microenvironment of solid tumors.

Summary: This study evaluates the results of medical-guideline-derived quality indicators for cervical cancer and ovarian cancer, examines the development of indicator implementation over time, and identifies improvement measures. The results show that process-organization indicators have a high degree of application and a significant impact on the quality of care. Treatment-procedures indicators reach a plateau where the guideline is known, and surgical interventions indicators fluctuate.

Summary: This study evaluated the quality of palliative care in 36 Belgian palliative care teams and found large risk-adjusted variations between teams in multiple quality indicators. The results suggest the importance of repeated and standardized quality improvement evaluations to identify areas in palliative care delivery that need improvement and to allow teams to benchmark themselves against each other.

Summary: Cancer stage at diagnosis is crucial for managing individual patients and evaluating health care system effectiveness. International comparison of cancer survival by stage is challenging due to lack of standardized recording and variation in stage completeness across countries. Development of stage conversion algorithms and improvement of staging data completeness are recommended for valid international comparison.

Summary: This study compared the short- and long-term outcomes of gastric cancer patients with visceral obesity who underwent laparoscopic gastrectomy or open gastrectomy. The results showed that laparoscopic gastrectomy reduced overall complications and postoperative hospital stays, as well as improved long-term overall survival compared to open radical gastrectomy in patients with visceral obesity.

Summary: A set of 34 indicators for guideline-concordant care in lung cancer was selected and evaluated by a multidisciplinary panel of clinicians. Out of 22 feasible indicators, 16 were retained after assessing criterion validity and were further evaluated for reliability. The developed set of indicators is now available for implementing and monitoring quality initiatives for lung cancer care.

Summary: The Klinkenbergh technique for bronchial stump suturing following lung resection is named after the Dutch surgeon Dr. Klinkenbergh, a pioneer in cardiothoracic surgery in Europe. This technique involves performing two running sutures to close the bronchus, reducing the occurrence of broncho-pleural fistulas. In our experience, less than 2% of patients developed post-operative broncho-pleural fistulas in the last 5 years.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of the number of lymph nodes dissection (LND) on patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. The results showed a non-linear relationship between LND and overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Moderate lymphadenectomy was beneficial for patients with nodal metastases, but more extended lymphadenectomy did not improve survival in patients without nodal metastases.

Summary: Esophageal cancer, with high incidence and poor prognosis, has two major histological types: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, which differ in their epidemiology and treatment options. Immunotherapy, particularly adjuvant immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), has emerged as a potential treatment for resectable esophageal cancer. Recent clinical trials have shown promising results with ICIs for resectable esophageal cancer, although some concerns remain.
