Survival of women with cancers of breast and genital organs in Europe 1999-2007: Results of the EUROCARE-5 study

Background: Survival differences across Europe for patients with cancers of breast, uterus, cervix, ovary, vagina and vulva have been documented by previous EUROCARE studies. In the present EUROCARE-5 study we update survival estimates and investigate changes in country-specific and over time survival, discussing their relationship with incidence and mortality dynamics for cancers for which organised screening programs are ongoing. Methods: We analysed cases archived in over 80 population-based cancer registries in 29 countries grouped into five European regions. We used the cohort approach to estimate 5-year relative survival (RS) for adult (P15 years) women diagnosed 2000-2007, by age, country and region; and the period approach to estimate time trends (1999-2007) in RS for breast and cervical cancers. Results: In 2000-2007, 5-year RS was 57% overall, 82% for women diagnosed with breast, 76% with corpus uteri, 62% with cervical, 38% with ovarian, 40% with vaginal and 62% with vulvar cancer. Survival was low for patients resident in Eastern Europe (34% ovary-74% breast) and Ireland and the United Kingdom [Ireland/UK] (31-79%) and high for those resident in Northern Europe (41-85%) except Denmark. Survival decreased with advancing age: markedly for women with ovarian (71% 15-44 years; 20% P75 years) and breast (86%; 72%) cancers. Survival for patients with breast and cervical cancers increased from 1999-2001 to 2005-2007, remarkably for those resident in countries with initially low survival. Conclusions: Despite increases over time, survival for women's cancers remained poor in Eastern Europe, likely due to advanced stage at diagnosis and/or suboptimum access to adequate care. Low survival for women living in Ireland/UK and Denmark could indicate late detection, possibly related also to referral delay. Poor survival for ovarian cancer across the continent and over time suggests the need for a major research effort to improve prognosis for this common cancer. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Vitamin D Status, Cdx2 Genotype, and Colorectal Cancer Survival: Population-Based Patient Cohort

Summary: According to recent evidence, the prognostic value of Vitamin D (VitD) status for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients might be confined to patients with the GG genotype of Cdx2, a functional polymorphism of the VitD receptor gene. In this study, the researchers aimed to validate these findings in a cohort of CRC patients by measuring serum VitD concentration and performing Cdx2 genotyping. The results showed that VitD deficiency is associated with poorer survival, particularly in patients with the GG genotype of Cdx2.

Estimating complete cancer prevalence in Europe: validity of alternative vs standard completeness indexes

Summary: Comparable indicators on complete cancer prevalence are needed in Europe. Two alternative approaches, empirical indices derived from European registries and pre-calculated indices derived from US-SEER cancer registries, were compared to standard estimates using data from 62 registries in 27 countries. Empirical estimates differ little from standard estimates for elderly-diagnosed tumors, but may underestimate complete prevalence for early-onset cancers. SEER estimates are comparable to standard ones for most cancers, even derived from short time series, but longer observations are needed for certain cancers with remarkable differences in incidence and prognosis between European and US populations.

Inequalities in treatment among patients with colon and rectal cancer: a multistate survival model using data from England national cancer registry 2012-2016

High temperature, COVID-19, and mortality excess in the 2022 summer: a cohort study on data from Italian surveillances

Summary: This study aimed to assess whether the effect of high temperature on mortality differed in COVID-19 survivors and naive individuals. Data from summer mortality and COVID-19 surveillances were used. The results showed a 3.8% excess risk in summer 2022 compared to 2015-2019, with a 20% increase in the last fortnight of July, the period with the highest temperature. The increase in mortality rates during this period was higher among naive individuals compared to COVID-19 survivors. Time series analysis confirmed the association between temperatures and mortality in naive individuals but not in COVID-19 survivors.

Population-Based Clinical Cancer Registration in Germany

Summary: Cancer registration in Germany has a long tradition and in 2013, new legislation mandated the implementation of additional clinical cancer registration. The aim was to measure and improve the quality of cancer care. The current status of extended cancer registration in Germany shows a slight decrease in the age-standardized incidence of cancer over the last decade. The five-year relative survival rate for all cancers is 67% for women and 63% for men.

Cancer of the Cervix in Bulgaria: Epidemiology of a Crisis

Summary: Eastern Europe, particularly Bulgaria, has high rates of uterine cervix cancer and human papillomavirus infection. This study examined the trends in cervix cancer in Bulgaria, which lacks a population-based screening program and is facing a demographic crisis. The findings showed that although there has been a decrease in cervix cancer incidence, the issue remains significant in Bulgaria, with a decrease in early-stage diagnosis.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated fecal carcinoembryonic antigen (FCEA) as a biomarker for the noninvasive diagnosis and diagnosis of colorectal cancer (CRC). The study found significant differences in FCEA levels between CRC and control groups, and the diagnostic performance of FCEA was superior to that of serum carcinoembryonic antigen (SCEA), suggesting its potential role as a novel and easily measurable biomarker for the diagnosis of CRC. However, more comprehensive evaluation in screening settings is needed due to limited evidence from clinical studies.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of platelet activation on CLEC-2 expression and sCLEC-2 plasma level. PDPN significantly increased the aggregation response induced by classical agonists. Stimulation of platelets with ADP or PDPN caused a significant decrease in CLEC-2 on platelets and sCLEC-2 in the plasma. The plasma level of sCLEC-2 was lower in most tumor patients, except for glioblastoma patients who displayed higher levels.

Summary: In this study, genetic alterations in resectable pleural mesothelioma tissues and blood samples were analyzed, and it was found that high tissue tumor mutational burden, tissue median minor allele frequency, blood tumor mutational burden, and specific mutations were correlated with outcomes in patients with resected PM. These findings suggest that molecular profiling could help identify longer survivors in patients with resected PM.
