Summary: Increasing levels of sodium carbonate are major causes of grassland alkalinization in the SongNen Plain of northeast China. In this study, Medicago sativa CV. Zhongmu No.1 seedlings were used to investigate the effects of laboratory-simulated basic salt (BS) and freeze-thaw (FT) stresses. The results showed that these stresses led to changes in osmoregulatory substances, biological membrane permeability, and antioxidant enzyme activity in the seedlings.

Summary: A series of freeze-thaw (FT) cycle experiments and drop-weight impact tests were conducted to investigate the dynamic fracture characteristics of fractured sandstone under FT cycles. The results showed that the dynamic elastic modulus and P/S wave velocities of sandstone decreased significantly after 10 cycles of FT. In addition, the porosity of sandstone increased with the number of FT cycles, and the crack growth velocity was positively correlated with the number of FT cycles.

Summary: This study investigated the shear strength characteristics of shallow expansive soil under freeze-thaw effects by simulating seasonal frozen conditions and conducting freeze-thaw and direct shear tests. The results showed significant variations in shear strength along with depth, closely related to water content. The main reason for the reduction in shear strength after freeze-thaw was the significant decrease in cohesion.

Summary: This study examined the effects of different fertilizer treatments and environmental factors on soil bacterial diversity and alfalfa yield in coastal saline soil in China. The results showed that the productivity was significantly higher in fulvic acid potassium + Bacillus and fulvic acid potassium treatments compared to bio-charcoal treatment and control. The timing of alfalfa harvest and hydrothermal conditions had significant effects on the soil bacterial community. Fertilizer supplementation, particularly with fulvic acid potassium, effectively increased the yield of alfalfa in coastal saline soil.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of freeze-thaw action on soil macropore and macro-aggregate characteristics using X-ray computer tomography and dry sieving. The results showed that freeze-thaw effects increased the total image porosity, mean pore diameter, porosity with branches, and connectivity density. However, the total number of pores displayed a first increase - then decrease trend. The increase in macroporosity and pore branches easily induced the breakdown of macro-aggregates.

Summary: Accurately identifying patients with progressive mild cognitive impairment (pMCI) who will develop Alzheimer's disease (AD) is crucial for early intervention. Current studies mainly focus on high-dimensional neuroimaging data, but they are expensive to obtain and healthcare datasets are often imbalanced. To address this, the study proposes a new strategy using unsupervised novelty detection techniques to predict pMCI. Results show that the proposed method performs well and is cost-effective.

Summary: A low-cost functionalization method was used to prepare an efficient adsorbent for ammonia nitrogen from diatomite. The optimized conditions included modification with H2SO4, NaCl, and calcination, resulting in excellent adsorption performance of the functionalized diatomite (DTCA-Na). The adsorption process of ammonia nitrogen followed pseudo-first-order kinetics and Langmuir isothermal model. The removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen remained above 80% even after multiple adsorption-desorption experiments.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) on egg production, egg quality, immune response, and intestinal health of laying hens challenged with Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The results showed that supplementing 80 mg/kg of 25OHD in diets can improve egg laying rate and feed efficiency, decrease broken egg rate, and enhance intestinal barrier function and antioxidant capacity. Additionally, it can also decrease proinflammatory cytokines levels in laying hens. Therefore, the addition of 25OHD in diets may enhance laying performance and egg quality in LPS-challenged hens.

Summary: This study analyzed the desorption components of cotton, wool, and polyester fabrics exposed to tobacco smoke and hot pot odor using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Different mass diffusion coefficients were proposed for odors with different molecular weights. The results showed that cotton fabrics released more compounds with tobacco smoke and hot pot odor, while wool fabrics had fewer compounds, and 3-ethenylpyridine was not detected. The dynamic model demonstrated the effect of airflow velocity and fabric porosity on nicotine desorption.

Summary: This experiment aimed to explore the effects of long-term supplementation of 25-hydroxyvitamin D-3 (25-OHD) as a vitamin D-3 (VD3) substitute on the performance, bone traits, and egg quality of laying hens. The results showed that while the supplementation of 25-OHD improved bone quality in the late laying period, it reduced feed intake and growth during the rearing stage. Additionally, the 25-OHD treatment had negative effects on certain bone traits, but did not significantly impact laying performance.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with benzoic acid, Enterococcus faecium, and essential oil complex (BEC) on laying hens recovering from coccidia and Clostridium perfringens challenge. Results showed that the addition of BEC improved egg-laying rate, reduced gut damage, and modulated microbial composition. The genera Faecalibacterium and Asterolplasma were positively correlated with egg-laying rate, while the genera Bacteroides and Romboutsia were negatively correlated. The addition of BEC to the diet demonstrated positive effects on the production performance and gut health of laying hens recovering from the challenge.

Summary: This paper reports a bifunctional microwave metasurface with an asymmetric bidirectional transmission phase that can be controlled. The metasurface is composed of bilayered double-arrow-shaped structures sandwiching a subwavelength metal grating. The metasurface breaks the symmetry and realizes different functions for opposite propagation directions, such as deflection and focusing, orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode generation, and holographic imaging. The experimental results suggest that the proposed metasurface can be further exploited for various applications.
