Erectile dysfunction (ED) is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and CVD mortality. However, the relationship between ED and subclinical CVD is less clear. We synthesized the available data on the association of ED and measures of subclinical CVD. We searched multiple databases for published literature on studies examining the association of ED and measures of subclinical CVD across four domains: endothelial dysfunction measured by flow-mediated dilation (FMD), carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), coronary artery calcification (CAC), and other measures of vascular function such as the ankle-brachial index, toe-brachial index, and pulse wave velocity. We conducted random effects meta-analysis and meta-regression on studies that examined an ED relationship with FMD (15 studies; 2025 participants) and cIMT (12 studies; 1264 participants). ED was associated with a 2.64 percentage-point reduction in FMD compared to those without ED (95% CI: -3.12, -2.15). Persons with ED also had a 0.09-mm (95% CI: 0.06, 0.12) higher cIMT than those without ED. In subgroup meta-analyses, the mean age of the study population, study quality, ED assessment questionnaire (IIEF-5 or IIEF-15), or the publication date did not significantly affect the relationship between ED and cIMT or between ED and FMD. The results for the association of ED and CAC were inconclusive. In conclusion, this study confirms an association between ED and subclinical CVD and may shed additional light on the shared mechanisms between ED and CVD, underscoring the importance of aggressive CVD risk assessment and management in persons with ED.

Summary: Phase I cancer trials play a crucial role in testing the safety and optimal dosage of new cancer drugs. Understanding biostatistical methodologies is essential for developing phase I studies that are safe and effective. This review article provides an overview of important phase I study designs and aims to help researchers better understand existing methods. Adaptive designs have shown significant advantages, and ongoing studies are continuously improving and developing new methods. This study provides a concise summary of dosage selection techniques for phase I cancer trials and presents various statistical designs.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the relationship between individual votes and Panel recommendations in the premarket review process of medical devices. It found that non-physicians, non-biostatisticians, experienced Panelists, and more talkative members are likely to vote against the majority. The presence of biostatisticians on Panels increases voting consensus. Having a diversity of opinions, including those likely to dissent from majority views, helps ensure diverse perspectives are considered before decision-making.

Hospital Outcomes Among COVID-19 Hospitalizations With Myocarditis from the California State Inpatient Database

Summary: Myocarditis is significantly associated with higher in-hospital mortality and adverse hospital outcomes among patients with COVID-19. The rate of in-hospital mortality is higher in COVID-19 hospitalizations with myocarditis, and the survival rate is lower. Myocarditis is also significantly associated with increased odds of cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock, mechanical ventilation, and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Early suspicion of myocarditis is important for prompt diagnosis and management.

Summary: This study compared the in hospital outcomes of patients receiving catheter ablation (CA), left atrial appendage closure (LAAC), and combination of both treatments on the same day. The results showed that there were no significant differences in major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) between CA and combination treatment, as well as between LAAC and combination treatment.

Summary: This study examined the impact of COVID-19 on hospitalizations for intracranial meningioma resection using a large database. The results showed that even though hospitalization rates slightly decreased during the pandemic, hospital outcomes were not adversely affected. This highlights the importance of adequate planning and preparation to maintain quality care during healthcare emergencies.

Difference in 30-Day Readmission Rates After Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Versus Laparoscopic Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass: a Propensity Score Matched Study Using ACS NSQIP Data (2015-2019)

Summary: This study compared the 30-day readmission rates of laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) using a national dataset. The study found that the readmission rates were significantly higher in the LRYGB group compared to the LSG group. Factors such as age, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, bleeding disorders, blood urea nitrogen, SGOT, alkaline phosphatase, hematocrit, and operation time were found to predict readmission rates.

Summary: This study reveals the relationship between habitual sleep duration, cardiovascular health (CVH), and their impact on healthcare costs and resource utilization. It shows that individuals with 6-8.9 hours and >= 9 hours of sleep are more likely to achieve optimal goals for diet, physical activity, body mass index, and blood pressure. Compared to those who sleep less than 6 hours, individuals with 6-8.9 hours and >= 9 hours of sleep have lower cardiovascular health risks. Furthermore, individuals with 6 or more hours of sleep have lower healthcare expenditures and reduced likelihood of emergency room visits and hospitalizations.
