The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of dietary inclusion of humic acid and enzymes on bone development, histomorphology of internal organs and the incidence of rickets in broiler chickens fed canola-based diets. In the study, Cobb 500 broiler chicks were used and the following five dietary treatments were administered: control (commercial diet); CM (17.5% canola meal inclusion); CMEnz (17.5% CM inclusion + 0.3g/kg Axtra XAP); CMPh (17.5% CM inclusion + 1.5% potassium humate (PH)); and CMEnzPh (17.5% CM inclusion + 1.5% PH + 0.3g/kg Axtra XAP). These diets were formulated and randomly allocated to 20 pens (experimental units), each housing 11 birds. The birds were phase fed, with the starter diet being given to all birds from day 1 to day 14. During the grower (days 15-28) and finisher phases (days 29-42) birds were fed the experimental diets. Diet differed significantly across all treatments on latency-to-lie (LTL) test. Broilers fed CMEnz had the lowest standing persistence (2.88 +/- 2.69 min) and those on CMEnzPh had the highest (11.19 +/- 2.69 min), followed by those offered the control diet (9.05 +/- 2.69 min). Gross lesion analysis displayed high prevalence of rickets in boilers fed CMEnz diet compared with all other dietary treatments. Intestinal morphometric parameters demonstrated some dietary differences in the height and width of the intestinal villi and intestinal crypts. In conclusion, inclusion of humic acid in canola-based diets appeared to positively influence digestion and assimilation dynamics that were consequential to the improvement in bone and immune development in broilers.

Cultivating oyster mushrooms on red grape pomace waste enhances potential nutritional value of the spent substrate for ruminants

Godfrey Mhlongo, Caven Mguvane Mnisi, Victor Mlambo

Summary: This study evaluated the bioconversion of red grape pomace using edible oyster mushrooms and found that higher spawn rates had a positive effect on the chemical composition and in vitro ruminal fermentation efficiency of the pomace. The optimal spawning rate for maximum efficiency was determined to be 300 g/kg based on quadratic responses of partition factors at 48 hours post-inoculation.

Summary: The study showed that a nitrogen fertilisation rate of 50 kg ha(-1) per application interval is sufficient to improve total N, BISN, and in vitro ruminal N degradability in tropical grass forage, particularly in Brachiaria hybrid and Megathyrsus maximus.

Interactive effects of growth stage and nitrogen fertilization on herbage characteristics and nutritive value of Paspalum atratum

Martin Hughes, Victor Mlambo, Cicero Lallo

Summary: This study evaluated the interactive effects of N fertilization and harvesting stage on P. atratum herbage characteristics and nutritive value, finding that 50 kg/ha of N fertilization resulted in the highest dry matter yield at 12-week regrowth and the highest crude protein content at 6-week regrowth. Herbage characteristics and nutritive value of P. atratum displayed a quadratic response to N fertilization at both regrowth stages.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic diversity, virulence, and antimicrobial resistance of atypical enteropathogenic E. coli O177 strains isolated from cattle feces in South Africa. The findings showed that cattle carry genetically diverse E. coli O177 strains with a repertoire of virulence and resistance genes, highlighting the need for surveillance of multidrug resistant E. coli O177 strains in cattle.

Summary: The study found that thermal methods can effectively reduce the trypsin inhibitor activity in marama bean and soybean, while increasing the crude protein content. However, soaking for 24 hours may have a less desirable effect and could potentially have negative impacts on ash content and amino acid profiles.

Stocking density-induced changes in growth performance, blood parameters, meat quality traits, and welfare of broiler chickens reared under semi-arid subtropical conditions

Kwena Kgaogelo Thema, Caven Mguvane Mnisi, Victor Mlambo

Summary: Broiler production in semi-arid tropics is affected by heat stress, which impacts stocking density, bird welfare, and profitability. This study found that increasing stocking density led to decreased feed intake and weight gain in broilers. It also affected meat quality and organ size. Based on the findings, it is recommended to rear Ross 308 broilers at a stocking density of no more than 20 birds/pen in semi-arid subtropical conditions.

Improving the marketing of goat meat to youths in South Africa

M. Ngomane, C. Z. Tsvakirai, V. Mlambo

Summary: There is a growing demand for goat meat in the global market, driven by older generations. However, younger people have negative perceptions towards this type of meat. This study found that South African youths perceive goat meat negatively in terms of quality, but appreciate its positive impact on the environment, society, animal rights, and health. The study suggests that marketing strategies should focus on highlighting the confirmed positive perceptions, while addressing the concerns fuelling the negative perceptions through product innovation and consumer education.

Summary: The high prevalence of protein energy malnutrition in Africa could be addressed by utilizing underutilized tree seeds such as Trichilia species. This study found that Trichilia oilseeds have high levels of essential amino acids and versatile functional properties, making them suitable candidates for addressing protein malnutrition in economically disadvantaged communities of sub-Saharan Africa. The results also showed that Trichilia oilseed proteins have a higher proportion of beta-conformations compared to soybean proteins.

An exogenous fibrolytic enzyme mixture enhances in vitro ruminal degradability of red grape pomace by-product

G. Mhlongo, C. M. Mnisi, V. Mlambo, B. Dlamini

Summary: The study investigated the effects of an exogenous fibrolytic enzyme mixture (Viscozyme (R) L) on the nutrient content and ruminal fermentation of red grape pomace (GP). The results showed that enzyme levels had an impact on the fibre content, gas production, and organic matter degradability of GP. Pre-treatment with Viscozyme reduced fibre levels and increased in vitro ruminal organic matter degradability, with an optimum inclusion level of 5 g/kg.
