Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely found in humans and the environment. Their persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity make them a source of increasing public health concern. In this study, we analyzed the concentrations and geographical distribution of six PFAS in the serum of 755 Spanish adults aged 18-65. The geometric mean concentrations (and P95 values) for PFOS (perfluoroctane sulfonate), PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), PFHxS (perfluorohexane sulfonate), PFNA (perfluorononanoic acid) and PFDA (perfluorodecanoic acid) were 7.67 (19.3), 1.99 (5.48), 0.91 (2.84), 0.96 (2.44) and 0.42 (0.99) mu g/L, respectively. N-Methylperfluorooctane sulfonamide (N-MeFOSAA) was detected in only 3.3% of samples. Residents in northeast (Catalonia) and northwest of Spain (Galicia) were found to have the highest serum values, whereas residents in the Canary Islands had the lowest values for almost all PFAS. Men presented higher levels than women, and we confirm that lactation (breastfeeding) contributes to a reduced body burden for all PFAS in women. Our data provide new information on exposure to PFAS in a national cross section sample of Spanish adults, thus providing a proxy for reference values for the Spanish population and forming the base for following temporal trends in the future. Summary: This study analyzes participant characteristics associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in Spain's first two waves of COVID-19 using data from the Spanish National Seroepidemiological Survey of SARS-CoV-2 Infection (ENE-COVID). The results show that the infection rate in Spain was 6.0% by June 2020 and increased to 3.8% by November 2020. Both genders were equally affected, but seroprevalence decreased with age in adults and socioeconomic differences increased in the second wave. Healthcare workers and individuals living with an infected person had higher infection risks.

Summary: The study investigated the association between three dietary patterns (Western, Prudent, and Mediterranean) and prostate cancer risk. The findings suggest that a high adherence to Prudent and Mediterranean dietary patterns is not sufficient to prevent prostate cancer, and reducing reliance on a Western-type diet appears to be necessary.

Long-Term Exposure to Nitrate and Trihalomethanes in Drinking Water and Prostate Cancer: A Multicase-Control Study in Spain (MCC-Spain)

Carolina Donat-Vargas, Manolis Kogevinas, Gemma Castano-Vinyals, Beatriz Perez-Gomez, Javier Llorca, Mercedes Vanaclocha-Espi, Guillermo Fernandez-Tardon, Laura Costas, Nuria Aragones, Ines Gomez-Acebo, Victor Moreno, Marina Pollan, Cristina M. Villanueva

Summary: This study examined the association between nitrate and trihalomethanes (THMs) in drinking water and prostate cancer. The results showed that long-term ingestion of nitrate from drinking water may be a risk factor for prostate cancer, especially for aggressive tumors. High intake of fiber, fruits/vegetables, and vitamin C may reduce this risk. Residential levels of brominated THMs and chloroform were found to be inversely and positively associated with prostate cancer, respectively, suggesting the relevance of inhalation and dermal routes.

Summary: The European Joint Programme HBM4EU conducted research on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and found that teenagers in Europe are frequently and highly exposed to PFASs. The main sources of exposure are drinking water and certain foods, and specific workplaces also have high levels of PFASs exposure. Therefore, measures need to be taken to prevent further contamination of the European population.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were included in the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU) for harmonization and advancement of human biomonitoring in Europe. A specific QA/QC program using ICIs and EQUASs was developed to ensure comparability and accuracy of analytical laboratories. The study found that 86% of participants achieved satisfactory results in determining 13 PAH metabolites in urine, although low limits of quantification were required. The HBM4EU QA/QC program established an international network of laboratories for comparable analysis of urinary PAH biomarkers.

Summary: Phthalates are widely used as plasticizers and can have negative impacts on reproductive functions. However, existing human biomonitoring studies on internal exposure to phthalates in Europe differ in many aspects, making comparability challenging. The HBM4EU initiative gathered data from 29 studies across Europe to describe the general population's exposure to phthalates from 2005 to 2019. This study is an important step towards making internal exposures to phthalates comparable across countries and provides suggestions for improved harmonization in future studies.

Summary: The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties into the erodibility factor (K) of USLE-type models. By modifying and improving the existing equations for soil texture and permeability, the study successfully included information on saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) into the calculation of K factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, two independent K factor maps with different spatial resolutions were generated. The results show that the decrease in K factor values has a positive impact on the modeling of soil erosion rates.

Summary: Atmospheric PM2.5, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), is associated with cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality. The study found that both the mass concentration of PM2.5 and the DTT activity were higher during the heating season than during the nonheating season. Combustion sources were the primary contributors to DTT activity during the heating season, while secondary formation dominated during the nonheating season.
