Cancer Related Fatigue in Rehabilitation Care

Purpose Aim of the study was to provide information about the prevalence of cancer related fatigue and the association between treatment-related factors and fatigue in cancer patients during the rehabilitation care. Patients and Methods In a multicenter study 693 cancer patients (27 % breast cancer, 17 % prostate cancer etc.) completed the Multidimensio-nal Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20) and sociodemographic and treatment information was noted. Results 51 % of the patients suffer from fatigue (n = 356). Fatigue prevalence differed according to tumour localization (p = 0.001). There was a substantial association between fatigue and treatment condition in terms of the combination of surgery and radiation (p = 0.05). Conclusion Fatigue was high prevalent in patients in the rehabilitation care. Thus, fatigue should be routinely screened and after differentiated diagnostics be considered in rehabilitation care plans.

Summary: This study aimed to identify potential correlates of cancer-related fatigue after curative breast cancer treatment, and found some factors that may be associated with fatigue. The results showed that weight, resting and recovery heart rate were positively associated with fatigue, while age and time from diagnosis were negatively associated. However, previous therapies, objectively assessed weekly physical activity, cardiorespiratory condition, muscular strength, and adherence to Mediterranean diet were not associated with CRF.

Time course and predictors of persistent cancer-related fatigue in long-term breast cancer survivors: a prospective observational study

Summary: The study examined the relationship between post-treatment cancer-related fatigue (CRF) and persistent CRF, as well as its association with functional and psychological disturbances. It also aimed to identify predictors of persistent CRF. Results showed that women classified as fatigued after treatment had higher rates of persistent CRF, along with increased pain and mood disturbances, and decreased physical fitness and quality of life.

Virtual Reality Rehabilitation Systems for Cancer Survivors: A Narrative Review of the Literature

Effectiveness of exercise training on cancer-related fatigue in colorectal cancer survivors: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Summary: Exercise training has a small-to-moderate effect on cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in colorectal cancer survivors. The effects of exercise interventions performed during chemotherapy are more significant, while exercise training after cancer treatment has a small and non-significant effect. A combination of aerobic plus resistance exercise for 12 to 24 weeks shows steady improvements in CRF.

Psychological Complications at 3 Months Following Stroke: Prevalence and Correlates Among Stroke Survivors in Lebanon

Summary: This study investigated the short-term psychological consequences of stroke among Lebanese survivors and identified significant associations between anxiety, depression, and various variables. Results showed that neuropathic pain, fatigue, cognitive impairment, anxiety, and depression were common complications post-stroke among Lebanese survivors. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed risk factors such as pain and immobility-related complications for anxiety and depression, highlighting the need for patient-centered interventions to address these issues.

Sexual rehabilitation recommendations for prostate cancer survivors and their partners from a biopsychosocial Prostate Cancer Supportive Care Program

The relationship between rumination, fatigue and psychological resilience among cancer survivors

Summary: This study examined the association between rumination, fatigue and psychological resilience among cancer survivors. Results indicated that intrusive rumination negatively mediated psychological resilience but positively mediated with CRF, while deliberate rumination positively mediated psychological resilience but negatively mediated with CRF. The findings highlight the importance of oncology nurses being aware of different types and effects of rumination in supporting cancer survivors.

Partnership, sexuality, and fertility-related communication: findings from a register-based study among long-term hematological cancer survivors

Factors related to quality of life included satisfaction with partnership, satisfaction with sexual life, and conversation about fertility with physicians. These findings need to be confirmed in longitudinal studies.

Physical and psychosocial factors associated with sexual satisfaction in long-term cancer survivors 5 and 10 years after diagnosis

Summary: Our study examines the sexual satisfaction of long-term cancer survivors 5 and 10 years after diagnosis, revealing factors that can both hinder and enhance sexual satisfaction, such as psychosocial and physical symptom burden and social support. We surveyed 924 patients recruited from a local cancer registry, assessing various factors including chronic comorbidity, symptom scales, depression, anxiety, partnership satisfaction, quality of life, and social support. The study finds that nearly half of the respondents perceive a decline in sexual satisfaction post-cancer. High sexual satisfaction is associated with factors such as low chronic comorbidity, less fatigue, pain, depression, and anxiety, as well as high social support, satisfaction with partnership, and quality of life.

Summary: This study compared the screening accuracy of HADS-D and HADS-T for major depression and found no significant difference in diagnostic accuracy between the two. The shorter HADS-D would be preferred in most clinical and research settings as it not only reduces patient burden but also has equivalent diagnostic accuracy to HADS-T.

Changes, challenges and support in work, education and finances of adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors: A qualitative study

Summary: An increasing number of adolescents and young adults (AYA) are coping with the long-term effects of cancer and its treatment. This study aimed to collect detailed information about the work, education, and financial situation of AYA cancer survivors after acute treatment, and identified sources of support. The findings highlighted career modifications and job loss, uncertainty in the return-to-work process, discrimination at the workplace, and financial burdens as significant themes. Relatives and German social security institutions were identified as important sources of support.

Psychosocial distress in cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy: a prospective national cohort of 1042 patients in Germany

Prevalence and severity of anxiety in cancer patients: results from a multi-center cohort study in Germany

Utilization of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) by women with breast cancer or gynecological cancer

Summary: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and methods of CAM use in breast cancer and gynecological cancer patients, compare CAM users vs. non-CAM users regarding their sociodemographic and medical characteristics, and investigate the relationship between CAM use and QoL. The results showed that 46.5% of the patients used some form of CAM, and CAM use was higher in breast cancer patients. CAM users were younger, more educated, and financially better off, but had a lower global health status/QoL.

Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy in Psycho-Oncological Care

Summary: Being diagnosed with cancer often leads to psychological distress. Advanced cancer patients in particular may experience what is called existential distress, characterized by a loss of meaning and purpose in life due to facing a life-threatening disease. Existential distress greatly impacts healthcare outcomes and quality of life, and is associated with suicidal thoughts, even without accompanying mental disorders like depression. Meaning-centered psychotherapy has proven successful in alleviating existential distress in cancer patients.

New progress in an old debate? Applying the DSM-5 criteria to assess traumatic events and stressor-related disorders in cancer survivors

Summary: In this study, hematological cancer survivors were assessed using the DSM-5 criteria, and it was found that about 8% of reported stressors qualified as traumatic events. Among all PTSD cases, only 1.1% were cancer-related. Therefore, the DSM-5 criteria help differentiate PTSD from AjD in cancer patients.
