Anorexia nervosa ( AN) is a psychiatric disorder related to very serious consequences for physical and mental health of patients. Due to a complex clinical picture, which consists of a number of somatic and mental symptoms, AN remains a serious problem of modern medicine and encourages the search for possible causes of the illness and new, more effective therapies. The recent reports emphasize the role of the intestinal microbiota in regulation of body weight. In this light, the hypothesis that in AN patients there is a significant imbalance of the intestinal microbiota, which contributes to the pathogenesis of the illness, seems interesting. The results of the latest research suggest that abnormal composition of the intestinal microbiota may be an important factor supporting cachexia of AN patients. Detailed analyzes of the composition of the microbiota characteristic for anorexia nervosa could be useful in developing new methods for monitoring and treatment of this illness. This paper aims to present the current state of the art about the role of the intestinal microbiota in the pathogenesis, course and treatment of AN.

AA genotype of PLIN1 13041A>G as an unfavourable predictive factor of malnutrition associated with fat mass loss in locally advanced head and neck cancer male patients treated with radiotherapy

Tomasz Powrozek, Anna Brzozowska, Marcin Mazurek, Monika Prendecka, Iwona Homa-Mlak, Radoslaw Mlak, Teresa Malecka-Massalska

Summary: This study found that the 13041A>G polymorphism in the GPLIN1 gene is associated with adipose tissue loss and malnutrition development in HNC patients after radiation therapy. Men with the AA genotype had lower fat mass after RTH, and had higher risk of fat tissue loss. The presence of the AA genotype may help facilitate early nutritional intervention and supportive treatment for preventing body mass and fat mass loss during treatment.

The Concentration of Selected Heavy Metals in Muscles, Liver and Kidneys of Pigs Fed Standard Diets and Diets Containing 60% of New Rye Varieties

Agnieszka Chalabis-Mazurek, Jose Luis Valverde Piedra, Siemowit Muszynski, Ewa Tomaszewska, Sylwia Szymanczyk, Sylwester Kowalik, Marcin B. Arciszewski, Anna Zacharko-Siembida, Tomasz Schwarz

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of partially substituting wheat and barley with maize or modern rye varieties on the concentration of heavy metals in feed offered to pigs and in pig tissues. The results showed that new rye varieties, especially hybrid variety, could be a potential alternative source of cereal grains for pig nutrition.

Analysis of the Peripapillary and Macular Regions Using OCT Angiography in Patients with Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder

Edyta Koman-Wierdak, Joanna Rog, Agnieszka Brzozowska, Mario Damiano Toro, Vincenza Bonfiglio, Katarzyna Zaluska-Ogryzek, Hanna Karakula-Juchnowicz, Robert Rejdak, Katarzyna Nowomiejska

Summary: The study measured RNFL and vasculature using OCTA in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, finding that retinal microvascular dysfunction occurs in the macula but not around the optic disc. OCTA could be an important additional diagnostic tool in detecting psychiatric disorders.

How Do Polish Students Manage Emotional Distress during the COVID-19 Lockdown? A Web-Based Cross-Sectional Study

Ryszard Sitarz, Alicja Forma, Kaja Karakula, Dariusz Juchnowicz, Jacek Baj, Jacek Bogucki, Hanna Karakula-Juchnowicz

Summary: This study aimed to assess stress coping strategies among Polish students during the COVID-19 lockdown and evaluate the impact of those strategies on depression, stress, and anxiety symptoms. Findings showed that women tended to turn to religion for emotional distress relief, while men were more likely to use substances and humor.

TNF-α Induced Myotube Atrophy in C2C12 Cell Line Uncovers Putative Inflammatory-Related lncRNAs Mediating Muscle Wasting

Tomasz Powrozek, Dominika Pigon-Zajac, Marcin Mazurek, Michael Ochieng Otieno, Mansur Rahnama-Hezavah, Teresa Malecka-Massalska

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of inflammatory conditions on the expression of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in a mouse skeletal muscle cell line. Three lncRNAs (Gm4117, Ccdc41os1, and 5830418P13Rik) were found to be significant in inflammatory-related myotube atrophy. The expression of lncRNAs varied depending on the concentration of the inflammatory factor and the treatment time. Bioinformatics analysis identified potential target genes and miRNAs for these lncRNAs, further implicating their involvement in molecular processes related to muscle atrophy.

Concentration of Selected Metalloproteinases and Osteocalcin in the Serum and Synovial Fluid of Obese Women with Advanced Knee Osteoarthritis

Jaromir Jarecki, Teresa Malecka-Masalska, Ewa Kosior-Jarecka, Wojciech Widuchowski, Piotr Krasowski, Martina Gutbier, Maciej Dobrzynski, Tomasz Blicharski

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of MMPs and osteocalcin in the serum and synovial fluid of obese women with osteoarthritis and their correlations with clinical status. The results showed that the levels of MMP3, MMP9, and pro-MMP13 were increased in more advanced stages of osteoarthritis, indicating an underlying inflammatory process.

Characteristics of Sleep Paralysis and Its Association with Anxiety Symptoms, Perceived Stress, PTSD, and Other Variables Related to Lifestyle in Selected High Stress Exposed Professions

Paulina Wrobel-Knybel, Michal Flis, Joanna Rog, Baland Jalal, Leszek Wolkowski, Hanna Karakula-Juchnowicz

Summary: This study investigates the prevalence, frequency, and symptomatology of sleep paralysis (SP) as well as the impact of anxiety symptoms, perceived stress, and lifestyle variables on SP. The study finds that SP is associated with PTSD and anxiety symptoms, and factors such as age, BMI, smoking, alcohol consumption, sleep duration, and perceived stress also influence the occurrence and severity of SP. These findings suggest a complex etiology for SP involving psychological and lifestyle factors.

Niacin Skin Flush Backs-From the Roots of the Test to Nowadays Hope

Ryszard Sitarz, Dariusz Juchnowicz, Kaja Karakula, Alicja Forma, Jacek Baj, Joanna Rog, Robert Karpinski, Anna Machrowska, Hanna Karakula-Juchnowicz

Summary: The niacin skin flush test (NSFT) is a simple method for assessing fatty acid content in cell membranes and may serve as an indicator of underlying factors in patients. This paper aims to determine the potential usefulness of NSFT in mental disorder diagnostics and identify factors that may affect its results. Research suggests that NSFT can aid in early intervention, psychiatric staging, and the development of new therapeutic methods based on its mechanisms. It can also contribute to personalized diets for patients and has potential benefits in the subclinical phase of the disease. However, further validation of NSFT is needed.
