Summary: This article explores the recent advances and future prospects for diamond-based coatings of conventional osteo-implant materials, emphasizing the ability of these coatings to improve integration with existing bone, enhance implant mechanical properties, facilitate surface chemical functionalization, and provide anti-microbial properties. In addition, diamond coatings may have an osteo-inductive effect, improving implant integration through stem cell recruitment and bone regeneration. Current research is highlighted to support further improvement in implant integration through an osseoinductive effect from diamond composite materials.

Summary: Research scientists have developed a smart hydrogel delivery matrix to prolong the release of the prodrug GCV, enabling the programmed ablation of proliferative cells within neural grafts. In vitro studies showed that the functionalized hydrogel effectively eliminated hPSCs and proliferating neural progenitors. In vivo experiments demonstrated that the one-off intracerebral delivery of the hydrogel reduced proliferative cells in teratomas and neural grafts without affecting neuron functionality.

Summary: Corneal tissue engineering is a promising method using natural proteins and polysaccharides to treat ocular diseases that cause blindness. This review provides an overview of various biomaterials, such as proteins (fibrin, silk fibroin, collagen, etc.) and polysaccharides (chitin, hyaluronic acid, alginate, etc.), and their applications in corneal tissue engineering. The article also discusses recent developments in biomaterial design, cross-linking strategy, and corneal cell selection.

Summary: The study developed biomimetic chitosan: gelatin cryogels for bone tissue engineering, which combine the biological recognition of natural polymers with the interconnected porosity of cryogels and properties mimicking bone like hydroxyapatite. The research evaluated the effect of chitosan and gelatin ratios on the final properties of the cryogels, showing promising biocompatibility and favorable properties for bone tissue engineering applications.

Summary: In this study, gelatin-based pH- and thermal-responsive magnetic hydrogels were developed as novel drug delivery systems for cancer chemo/hyperthermia therapy. By loading anticancer drugs and investigating their performance in both chemo- and chemo/hyperthermia-therapies, the hydrogels showed acceptable drug release behaviors and high drug loading capacities. The combination of hyperthermia therapy and chemotherapy demonstrated synergic effects on the anticancer activities of the developed drug delivery systems.

Summary: Corneal transplantation is the primary treatment option for patients with severe corneal injury or disease, but the demand for donor corneas greatly exceeds availability. To overcome shortage issues, bioengineered constructs mimicking corneal stroma have been developed, but they often exhibit poor performance in clinical trials.

Summary: A subpopulation of cells in hiPSC-derived corneal epithelial cell sheets, positive for ABCB5, demonstrate remarkable holoclone-forming capabilities that can be suppressed by ABCB5 blockade. These cells first emerge in 2D eye-like organoids around six weeks of differentiation and display corneal epithelial characteristics, including sustained expression of ABCB5. This study highlights the translational potential of ABCB5-enriched, hiPSC-derived corneal epithelial cell sheets for vision recovery in stem cell-deficient human eyes and represents the first report of holoclone-forming stem cells identified in an hiPSC-derived organoid.

Summary: This study investigated the MMPs and TIMPs profile in FECD, revealing a decrease in MMP-2 and MMP-10 among FECD samples and overall decreased MMPs/TIMPs ratio in FECD cell populations. The analysis also showed differences in MMPs and TIMPs expression between different cell morphologies in both FECD and healthy CECs.

Summary: Corneal wound healing involves communication between different cell types, which is partially mediated by exosomes. This study isolated exosomes released by different corneal cell types and found that they can accelerate wound healing. Additionally, exosomes alter the expression pattern of regulated genes. These findings are important for understanding the mechanisms of corneal wound repair and may lead to new therapeutic approaches.
