Combat simulations have served as an alternative framework to study the cardiorespiratory demands of the activity in combat sports, but this setting imposes rule-restrictions that may compromise the competitiveness of the bouts. The aim of this study was to assess the cardiorespiratory responses to a full-contact taekwondo combat simulation using a safe and externally valid competitive setting. Twelve male national level taekwondo athletes visited the laboratory on two separate occasions. On the first visit, anthropometric and running cardiopulmonary exercise assessments were performed. In the following two to seven days, participants performed a full-contact combat simulation, using a specifically designed gas analyser protector. Oxygen uptake ((V) over dotO(2)), heart rate (HR) and capillary blood lactate measurements ([La-]) were obtained. Time-motion analysis was performed to compare activity profile. The simulation yielded broadly comparable activity profiles to those performed in competition, a mean (V) over dotO(2) of 36.6 +/- 3.9 ml.kg(-1).min(-1) (73 +/- 6% (V) over dotO(2PEAK)) and mean HR of 177 +/- 10 beats.min(-1) (93 +/- 5% HRPEAK). A peak (V) over dotO(2) of 44.8 +/- 5.0 ml.kg(-1).min(-1) (89 +/- 5% (V) over dotO(2PEAK)), a peak heart rate of 190 +/- 13 beats.min(-1) (98 +/- 3% HRmax) and peak [La-] of 12.3 +/- 2.9 mmol.L-1 was elicited by the bouts. Regarding time-motion analysis, combat simulation presented a similar exchange time, a shorter preparation time and a longer exchange-preparation ratio. Taekwondo combats capturing the full-contact competitive elements of a bout elicit moderate to high cardiorespiratory demands on the competitors. These data are valuable to assist preparatory strategies within the sport.

Is There an Optimal Interval for Medal Winning Performance in World Para Powerlifting Competition?

Joao Paulo Lopes-Silva, Dillon Richardson, David H. H. Fukuda, Emerson Franchini

Summary: The aim of the study was to determine the optimal interval between competitions for success in World Para Powerlifting events. The results showed that for World Cup events, an interval of 22-30 weeks increased the probability of winning a medal, while for World Championships and Paralympic Games, intervals of 23-31 weeks and 40 weeks or more were associated with higher chances of winning a medal. However, there were no significant differences in preparation intervals for Regional Games/Championships. Para Powerlifting athletes participating in major events can optimize their performance with specific preparation intervals.

Summary: This study investigated the test-retest reliability and discriminant validity of the Kickboxing Anaerobic Speed Test (KAST) and compared it to the maximal cycling sprint test (MCST). The results showed that both KAST and cycling tests were able to effectively discriminate between elite and sub-elite kickboxers.

Cadet and Junior Performance Is Associated With Senior's World Championship and Olympics Achievement in Judo

Marcelo Naname Junior, Joao Paulo Lopes-Silva, Monica Yuri Takito, Emerson Franchini

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 7780 athletes who competed in the World Championship (WC) and Olympic Games (OG) between 2009 and 2021. The findings showed that winning a medal at the cadet and junior Judo World Championship increased the probability of winning a medal at the senior level, with male athletes having a probability range of 3.3-3.8 and female athletes having a probability range of 5.3-5.4. Furthermore, athletes who did not compete in the junior WC had a higher probability of winning a medal at the senior level. The results indicate the importance of early success in junior tournaments for future senior performance in WC and OG.

Summary: This narrative review focuses on the estimation of energy system contributions during match simulations of different Olympic combat sports. The results showed that Olympic combat sports primarily rely on the oxidative system for energy, but key scoring actions are likely fueled by anaerobic pathways.

Listening to Preferred and Loud Music Enhances Taekwondo Physical Performances in Adolescent Athletes

Ibrahim Ouergui, Eya Jebabli, Slaheddine Delleli, Hamdi Messaoudi, Craig Alan Bridge, Hamdi Chtourou, Emerson Franchini, Christopher Garrett Ballmann, Luca Paolo Ardigo

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of warm-up music preference and loudness on physical performance, perceived exertion, and enjoyment in young taekwondo athletes. The results showed that listening to preferred music with a higher volume resulted in better performance and lower perceived exertion during taekwondo tasks. These findings have important implications for enhancing taekwondo training and performance.

Relative Age Effect in Judo Competitions: Influence of Age, Weight Category, Sex, and Time Frames

David H. H. Fukuda, Joao Paulo Lopes-Silva, Monica Yuri Takito, Emerson Franchini

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the presence of the relative age effect (RAE) in different age groups, weight categories, sexes, and over different time frames in international-level judo competition. A total of 9451 judo athletes who participated in the Olympic Games and/or World Championships between 1993 and 2020 were included in the analysis. The results showed that RAE was more prevalent in males than females, and in Cadets and Juniors compared to Seniors. Heavyweight and middleweight categories exhibited RAE in Senior and Junior males, while in females, it was present only in Cadet heavyweights. RAE was also found to be more pronounced in recent years for Senior male judo athletes. Poisson analysis provided additional insights, capturing RAE detection during an earlier time frame not apparent in the traditional analysis.

Repeated High-Intensity Technique Training and Repeated Sprint Training Elicit Similar Adjustment in Physiological Responses But Divergent Perceptual Responses and Combat-Related Performances in Adolescent Taekwondo Matches

Ibrahim Ouergui, Slaheddine Delleli, Hamdi Messaoudi, Craig Alan Bridge, Hamdi Chtourou, Emerson Franchini, Luca Paolo Ardigo

Summary: This study compared the effects of repeated sprint training (RST) and repeated high-intensity technique training (RTT) on physiological responses, perceptual responses, and performance in simulated taekwondo combats. The results showed similar physiological adjustments in both RST and RTT, but RTT had more favorable perceptual responses and combat-related performance. These findings emphasize the importance of training specificity in combat sports.
