Summary: This study investigated the association between statin use and gout risk in patients with hyperlipidemia. It was found that regular statin use was associated with a non-significant reduction in gout risk compared to irregular statin use and other lipid-lowering agent use. However, a protective effect was observed for higher cumulative doses and longer therapy durations.

Summary: This study investigated the association between statins and the risks of suicide attempt, depression, anxiety, and seizure. The study found that the risks of these adverse outcomes were elevated prior to statin initiation and remained elevated during the first 90 and 91-365 days after statin prescription. However, the risks decreased to the baseline level after 1 year of continuous prescription. The study suggests these risks may be explained by cardiovascular events for which statins were prescribed.

Summary: The study found that regular users of nonstatin lipid-lowering medicines had a higher risk of rehospitalization due to ischemic stroke compared to statin users. Among hyperlipidemic patients, rosuvastatin was the most preferred lipid-lowering medicine with lower risks of rehospitalization due to ischemic stroke.

Summary: The study found that patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) experience stigma, anxiety, and depression, with a significant correlation between them. Stressors can also impact the level of stigma in these patients. Proper identification of comorbidities and reducing stigma should be recommended in mental health efforts for HNC patients.

Summary: The study found that head and neck cancer survivors have higher rates of smoking, heavy drinking, and high mental health burden compared to survivors of other cancers. There is a bidirectional relationship between high mental health burden and smoking/heavy drinking, and nonpartnered marital status and insurance status are associated with these adverse factors.

Summary: This study investigates the risk factors of early-onset cataracts in Taiwan and finds that factors such as BMI, gender, educational level, chronic pain, family history, medication intake, and eye health significantly differ between the control and early-onset cataract groups. The study suggests that monitoring physical health, C-reactive protein (CRP), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) analysis may be important in preventing or delaying early-onset cataracts.

Summary: Patients with depression have a higher risk of hyperlipidemia, but this risk is significantly reduced with ADM therapy, possibly due to the downregulation of lipogenesis-related genes. Early detection and management of hyperlipidemia is recommended to further prevent cardiovascular disease.

Summary: This nationwide population-based cohort study conducted in Taiwan found a significant association between cigarette smoking and poor survival in patients with colorectal cancer. Smoking patients had a higher mortality risk compared to nonsmoking patients, particularly those who smoked 11-20 cigarettes per day or smoked for more than 30 years. The effects of smoking were more pronounced in male patients and those with colon cancer.

Summary: The study found that the clinical symptoms of patients with metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA) admitted to the ICU were mainly related to the head, chest, and abdomen, and the distribution of peak lactate level (PLL) was influenced by factors such as age, APACHE II score, nadir arterial bicarbonate level, treatment modalities, and mortality. After adjusting for age and gender, significant predictors of mortality in MALA patients were APACHE II score, PLL, vasoactive support, ventilator support, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
