Achillea millefoilum L. (Yarrow) is an important species of Asteraceae family with common utilization in traditional medicine of several cultures from Europe to Asia for the treatment of spasmodic gastrointestinal disorders, hepatobiliary, gynecological disorders, against inflammation and for wound healing. An extensive review of literature was made on A. millefoilum L. using ethno botanical text books, published articles in peer-reviewed journals, unpublished materials and scientific databases. The Plant List, International Plant Name Index and Kew Botanical Garden databases were used to authenticate the scientific names. Monoterpenes are the most representative metabolites constituting 90% of the essential oils in relation to the sesquiterpenes, and a wide range of chemical compounds have also been reported. Different pharmacological experiments in many in-vitro and in-vivo models have proved the potential of A. millefoilum with antiinflammatory, antiulcer, anticancer activities etc. lending support to the rationale behind numerous of its traditional uses. Due to the noteworthy pharmacological activities, A. millefoilum will be a better option for new drug discovery. The present review will comprehensively summarize the pharmacognosy, phytochemistry and ethnopharmacology of A. millefoilum reported to date, with emphasis on more in vitro, clinical and pathological studies needed to investigate the unexploited potential of this plant. Summary: In this study, hydroxy-2-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one was isolated from the methanol root extract of Senecio laetus and evaluated for its larvicidal potential against three mosquito species. The compound showed promising results with high mortality rates, especially against Cx. quinquefasciatus. Further toxicological and field evaluations may lead to the development of this compound as a potential insecticide.

An update on emerging therapeutics to combat COVID-19

Naveed Nazir Shah, Showkat Ul Nabi, Muzafar Ahmad Rather, Qudratullah Kalwar, Sofi Imtiyaz Ali, Wajid Mohammad Sheikh, Alveena Ganai, Showkeen Muzamil Bashir

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the urgent need for effective therapeutic protocols, with a focus on drug repurposing. Studies have identified potential targets for drug development against SARS-CoV-2, including inhibiting enzymatic proteins involved in viral replication. Clinical trials have shown inconclusive results regarding the efficacy of certain antiviral drugs, indicating a need for further research and emphasis on evidence-based approaches.

Summary: Nanotechnology has revolutionized various fields, but concerns have been raised about the potential deleterious effects of nanotechnology-based products on the environment. The use of organoid technology, which bridges the gap between traditional cell cultures and in vivo models, shows promise in accurately evaluating the toxicity of nano-drug formulations by simulating tissue microenvironments.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical presentation and outcome of COVID-19 patients with hypercreatinemia at the time of hospitalization. A retrospective observational study was conducted in 1668 patients confirmed positive for COVID-19 in India. The results showed that patients with hypercreatinemia had higher ICU admission rates, severe manifestations of the disease, need for mechanical ventilation, and all-cause mortality.
