The effect of pressure on open-framework silicates: elastic behaviour and crystal-fluid interaction

The elastic behaviour and the structural evolution of microporous materials compressed hydrostatically in a pressure-transmitting fluid are drastically affected by the potential crystal-fluid interaction, with a penetration of new molecules through the zeolitic cavities in response to applied pressure. In this manuscript, the principal mechanisms that govern the P-behaviour of zeolites with and without crystal-fluid interaction are described, on the basis of previous experimental findings and computational modelling studies. When no crystal-fluid interaction occurs, the effects of pressure are mainly accommodated by tilting of (quasi-rigid) tetrahedra around O atoms that behave as hinges. Tilting of tetrahedra is the dominant mechanism at low-mid P-regime, whereas distortion and compression of tetrahedra represent the mechanisms which usually dominate the mid-high P regime. One of the most common deformation mechanisms in zeolitic framework is the increase of channels ellipticity. The deformation mechanisms are dictated by the topological configuration of the tetrahedral framework; however, the compressibility of the cavities is controlled by the nature and bonding configuration of the ionic and molecular content, resulting in different unit-cell volume compressibility in isotypic structures. The experimental results pertaining to compression in penetrating fluids, and thus with crystal-fluid interaction, showed that not all the zeolites experience a P-induced intrusion of new monoatomic species or molecules from the P-transmitting fluids. For example, zeolites with well-stuffed channels at room conditions (e.g. natural zeolites) tend to hinder the penetration of new species through the zeolitic cavities. Several variables govern the sorption phenomena at high pressure, among those: the free diameters of the framework cavities, the chemical nature and the configuration of the extra-framework population, the partial pressure of the penetrating molecule in the fluid (if mixed with other non-penetrating molecules), the rate of P-increase, the surface/volume ratio of the crystallites under investigations and the temperature at which the experiment is conducted. An overview of the intrusion phenomena of monoatomic species (e.g. He, Ar, Kr), small (e.g. H2O, CO2) and complex molecules, along with the P-induced polymerization phenomena (e.g. C2H2, C2H4, C2H6O, C2H6O2, BNH6, electrolytic MgCl(2)Ic21H(2)O solution) is provided, with a discussion of potential technological and geological implications of these experimental findings.

A neutron diffraction study of boussingaultite, (NH4)2[Mg(H2O)6](SO4)2

Summary: The crystal structure and chemical composition of boussingaultite from Pecs-Vasas, Mecsek Mountains, South Hungary were studied using single-crystal neutron diffraction and various chemical analytical techniques. The study revealed that boussingaultite consists of isolated Mg(H2O)(6)-octahedra, NH4- and SO4-tetrahedra with a complex H-bonds network. Partial K+ vs. NH4+ replacement leads to local disorder and the presence of a partial picromerite component in the boussingaultite structure.

Anisotropic compressional behaviour of the Sorel cement F5-phase (Mg3(OH)5Cl•4H2O)

Summary: The crystal structure of the F5-phase, the main component of Sorel cement, was investigated using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data. An in-situ compressional experiment was conducted to study its high-pressure behavior. The F5-phase exhibited significant anisotropic compression, with two different regimes at different pressure ranges. The atomic-scale factors responsible for the compressional anisotropy of the F5-phase were discussed.

Pressure-mediated crystal-fluid interaction in the zeolite offretite

Summary: The high-pressure behavior and crystal-fluid interaction of natural offretite were studied using in situ single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction with a diamond anvil cell. Five different P-transmitting fluids were used: non-penetrating daphne oil 7575, potentially penetrating mixtures of methanol:ethanol:H2O = 16:3:1 and ethanol:water = 1:1, distilled H2O, and liquid Ne. The experiments revealed that daphne oil 7575 allowed the investigation of offretite's intrinsic compressional behavior, while the other fluids showed pressure-induced sorption of extra molecules within offretite's large 12 mRs channel. The magnitude of adsorption in the aqueous mixtures depended on the H2O content of the fluid, while Ne atoms were observed to penetrate the 12 mRs channel via weak Van der Waals attraction. A comparative analysis with structurally similar erionite was also provided.

Summary: The high-pressure behavior of natural erionite-K was investigated using in situ single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The study revealed that the compressibility of erionite-K is influenced by P-transmitting fluids, with potentially penetrating fluids showing lower compressibilities and suggesting the intrusion of new molecules into structural voids. This research provides new evidence for the hyper-confinement of molecules in the framework microcavities of natural erionite.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive examination of worldwide variation and trends in survival from brain tumors in adults by analyzing individual data from 2000 to 2014. The results show significant regional differences and temporal changes in survival rates, especially for the most common sub-types, with remarkable improvements since 2005 due to the uptake of chemoradiation. However, there are still some countries that lag behind in terms of survival rates.

Summary: The high-pressure behavior of natural arsenate gasparite-(Ce) has been studied, revealing a change in compressional behavior at around 15 GPa. The compression of the Rare Earth Elements coordination polyhedra controls the bulk compression of gasparite-(Ce) at the atomic scale.

Fungal diversity in lake and sea beaches of Italy: Relevance to human health br

Summary: This study investigates the fungal population in beach sands of the two largest Italian lakes and in sands and waters of Mediterranean coasts of Southern Italy to understand the causes of microbiological pollution and its impact on bathers' health. The study reveals significant differences in fungal population between the lakes and coastal areas. The prevalence of opportunistic pathogenic moulds, such as Aspergillus spp. and Penicillium spp., is observed in freshwater and coastal bathing sites.

Energy Transfer from Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: Implications for Magnetic Hyperthermia

Summary: Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have attracted attention for their biomedical applications. Through experiments and simulations, the mechanism of heat transfer from IONPs to their surroundings was revealed, providing a foundation for controlling the heat flow for activation or release of anchored molecules in medical and industrial applications.

Pre-impregnation approach to encapsulate radioactive liquid organic waste in geopolymer

Summary: In this study, a straightforward conditioning option for pre-disposal management of Radioactive Liquid Organic Waste (RLOW) is proposed, which involves impregnation on absorbing materials followed by encapsulation in a stable geopolymeric matrix. Recycled materials are used to enhance process sustainability. Various properties have been investigated to ensure the waste acceptance criteria are met, including materials compatibility, RLOW loading factor and bleeding, microstructure, compressive strength, leaching, and thermal stability. Although this approach shows promise, there are still some unresolved challenges.

Location of Bronsted sites in deuterated L-zeolite: A combined neutron powder diffraction and computer modeling study

Summary: The concentration and location of Bronsted acid sites (BASs) in deuterated L-zeolite were determined using neutron powder diffraction and ab-initio molecular dynamics modelling. Two Bronsted acid sites, D1 and D2, were identified, with D2 showing a large degree of mobility and D1 showing static disorder. The study also found that the O1 BAS had a higher Bronsted base character compared to the average basicity of the framework oxygens of the 12-membered ring channels.

Summary: We have developed a graphite resistive heated diamond anvil cell (GRHDAC) for powder and single-crystal x-ray diffraction experiments at the Extreme Conditions Beamline (P02.2) at PETRA III, Hamburg, Germany. The GRHDAC can heat samples homogeneously and precisely control the temperature up to 2000 K at high pressures, by placing it in a water-cooled vacuum chamber. The advantage of the GRHDAC is demonstrated through the study of geophysical processes in the Earth's crust and upper mantle region.

Interplay between coordination sphere engineering and properties of nickel diketonate-diamine complexes as vapor phase precursors for the growth of NiO thin films

Summary: The coordination sphere engineering of three heteroleptic Ni(ii) beta-diketonate-diamine adducts was studied, and it was found that the chemico-physical characteristics of the compounds directly depend on the functional groups in the diketonate ligands. Preliminary thermal CVD experiments demonstrated the suitability of the precursors for the obtainment of NiO films with flat and homogeneous surfaces.
