Objective: To evaluate the rate of force development (RFD) and the rate of electromyography rise (RER) of global and local trunk muscles in women with and without low back pain. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Laboratory setting. Participants: Twenty-eight women divided into low back pain (LBP, n = 14) and control groups (CG, n = 14) participated in this study. Main outcome measures: Subjects performed isometric contractions of trunk using an isokinetic dynamometer, and simultaneously the electromyography (EMG) signals were collected for global (rectus abdominis and longissimus thoracic) and local (internal oblique and multifidus) muscles. All variables were calculated using Matlab software. Results: Symptomatic subjects showed lower RFD during trunk extension and it was correlated to a reduced RER mainly in the trunk extensor musculature (p < 0.05). During trunk flexion, LBP exhibited a delayed time to reach peak RFD (p < 0.05) compared to CG. RER for global anterior muscle was higher than for local muscle (p < 0.05) and it was more persistent in asymptomatic women. CG also presented greater activation amplitude for both agonist and antagonist trunk muscles, mainly the global ones. Conclusion: Symptomatic women showed lower RFD and it was correlated to a reduced capacity of rapid muscle activation mainly in the trunk extensor musculature. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Decreased running economy is not associated with decreased force production capacity following downhill running in untrained, young men

Leonardo C. R. Lima, Kazunori Nosaka, Trevor C. Chen, Ronei S. Pinto, Camila C. Greco, Benedito S. Denadai

Summary: The study found that downhill running led to a decrease in running economy which lasted for several days, but this decrease was not strongly correlated with a decline in muscle function. This suggests that strength loss is not a key factor affecting running economy.

Modeling the depletion and reconstitution of W′: Effects of prior exercise on cycling tolerance

Paulo Cesar do Nascimento Salvador, Ricardo Dantas de Lucas, Lisa Schafer, Luiz Guilherme Antonacci Guglielmo, Bruno Grassi, Benedito Sergio Denadai

Summary: The study found that prior very-heavy intensity cycling leads to depletion of W' energy, subsequently affecting performance in high-intensity exercises, including reduced time to exhaustion and increased blood lactate concentration.

Summary: This study aimed to compare maximal and submaximal aerobic parameters between horizontal and incline-based incremental running tests. Findings showed no significant differences in most aerobic indices, but the IIRT had lower peak heart rate and higher peak O2 pulse.

Heart rate variability kinetics during different intensity domains of cycling exercise in healthy subjects

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the HRV and HR kinetics during cycling exercise in different intensity domains. The results showed significant differences in HR between Delta 30 and Delta 60, with HRV markers accelerating at higher intensities. The findings suggest distinct cardiac autonomic response times for HR and HRV markers in various intensity domains.

W′ reconstitution rate at different intensities above critical torque: the role of muscle size and maximal strength

Leonardo Henrique Perinotto Abdalla, Ryan Michael Broxterman, Thomas Jackson Barstow, Camila Coelho Greco, Benedito Sergio Denadai

Summary: The study found that muscle size and maximal strength have different influences on the parameters of the hyperbolic torque-time to task failure relationship, with larger muscle size and strength prolonging τ(IET') during intermittent isometric exercise. Additionally, muscle perfusion and O-2 delivery limitations play a significant role in defining the torque-time to task failure relationship.

EFFECTS OF WEARING AN ANKLE BRACE ON GROUND REACTION FORCES DURING JUMPS IN BASKETBALL GAME SIMULATION

Alex Castro, Marcio Fagundes Goethel, Edgar Ramos Vieira, Pedro Vieira Sarmet Moreira, Antonio Francisco de Almeida Neto, Adalgiso Coscrato Cardozo, Denis Brunt, Mauro Goncalves

Summary: Ankle braces can reduce the risk of ankle injuries by decreasing mediolateral ground reaction force in basketball players. However, they may increase mediolateral and vertical ground reaction force during basketball-specific vertical jumps and lead to a progressive increase in external load applied to the body over time during exercise.

Effect of a plyometric training session on the ground vs on mini-trampoline on balance and jump performance in basketball player

Marina Mello Villalba, Giovana Duarte Eltz, Ana Carolina Panhan, Matheus Maia Pacheco, Rafael Akira Fujita, Nilson Ribeiro dos Santos Silva, Adalgiso Coscrato Cardozo, Mauro Goncalves

Summary: This study compared the effects of plyometric training on the ground and on a mini-trampoline on jumping, balance, and landing performance in basketball players. The results showed that the ground training group had a larger landing impact and poorer balance performance compared to the mini-trampoline training group. A slight decrease in the center of pressure length was observed in the closed-eyes condition. Plyometric training on a mini-trampoline does not lead to deterioration in balance, landing, and performance.

Summary: Shoulder joint stability relies on proprioception, but there is a lack of reliable and user-friendly tools to assess it. This study evaluated the reliability of the Laser-Pointer assisted Angle Reproduction Test (LP-ART) and compared proprioception between symptomatic and asymptomatic shoulders. The results showed that LP-ART had moderate reliability and there was no difference in proprioception between the two shoulder groups.

Effects of Loaded Plyometric Exercise on Post-Activation Performance Enhancement of Countermovement Jump in Sedentary Men

Summary: After performing loaded resistance exercise, known as post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE), explosive performance is increased. This study investigated the effects of plyometric exercise on sedentary young men and found that PAPE disappeared after plyometric exercise induced minor muscle damage, but counter movement jump (CMJ) height increased during the recovery period, exhibiting a priming effect.

Summary: This study compared heart rate and blood pressure variability and baroreflex sensitivity between women with migraine and controls. The results showed that the migraine group had lower heart rate variability, characterized by reduced total variance, LF oscillations, and HF oscillations, as well as decreased SD and RMSSD. No difference was found in blood pressure variability analysis. In terms of baroreflex sensitivity, the migraine group had decreased values compared to the control group.

Could middle- and long-distance running performance of well-trained athletes be best predicted by the same aerobic parameters?

Benedito Sergio Denadai, Camila Coelho Greco

Summary: In experienced male runners with varying maximal oxygen uptake, aerobic parameters such as VO(2)max and vVO(2)max, running economy, blood lactate response, oxygen uptake kinetics, and critical velocity can predict endurance running performance. However, for well-trained runners, this relationship seems to be influenced by the duration of the race.
