A novel tumor suppressor role of myosin light chain kinase splice variants through downregulation of the TEAD4/CD44 axis

Yen-Ju Huang, Tsung-Chun Lee, Yu-Chen Pai, Been-Ren Lin, Jerrold R. Turner, Linda Chia-Hui Yu

Summary: The study found that human CRC showed lower levels of MLCK1/2 and higher expression of CD44, but no significant change in CD133 or LGR5. MLCK(-/-) mice in a chemical-induced CRC model exhibited a 3-fold increase in tumor burden. The MLCK1/2 variants act as tumor suppressors by reducing the nuclear translocation of specific transcriptional coactivators and inhibiting the TEAD4/CD44 axis in CRC.

Recurrence Outcomes Less Favorable in T1 Rectal Cancer than in T1 Colon Cancer

Li-Chun Chang, Chia-Tung Shun, Been-Ren Lin, Silvia Sanduleanu, Weng-Feng Hsu, Ming-Shiang Wu, Han-Mo Chiu

Summary: A study conducted at the National Taiwan University Hospital from 2005 to 2014 compared the disease-free survival of T1 cancer arising from the rectum versus the colon. The results showed that T1 rectal cancer had a higher risk of recurrence compared to T1 colon cancer, with rectal location being an independent risk factor for recurrence. Further research is needed to explore whether adjuvant therapy or closer surveillance can reduce the risk of recurrence in T1 rectal cancer.

CD28 engagement inhibits CD73-mediated regulatory activity of CD8+ T cells

Yo-Ping Lai, Lu-Cheng Kuo, Been-Ren Lin, Hung-Ju Lin, Chih-Yu Lin, Yi-Ting Chen, Pei-Wen Hsiao, Huan-Tsung Chang, Patrick Chow-In Ko, Hsiao-Chin Chen, Hsiang-Yu Chang, Jean Lu, Hong-Nerng Ho, Betty A. Wu-Hsieh, John T. Kung, Shu-Ching Chen

Summary: CD28 costimulation inhibits CD73 upregulation in CD8(+) T cells, thereby preventing them from becoming suppressive. Lack of CD28 costimulation renders CD8(+) T cells immunosuppressive and less effective in eliminating solid tumors.

ATMIN Suppresses Metastasis by Altering the WNT-Signaling Pathway via PARP1 in MSI-High Colorectal Cancer

Yue-Ju Li, Cheng-Ning Yang, Mark Yen-Ping Kuo, Wei-Ting Lai, Tai-Sheng Wu, Been-Ren Lin

Summary: In mismatch repair-deficient colorectal carcinoma, decreased expression of ATMIN is positively correlated with disease progression and metastasis. Knockdown of ATMIN increases cell motility and influences the Wnt signaling pathway via PARP1, providing potential for PARP1 inhibitors in further clinical trials for MSI-high CRC.

Resilience process in individuals with colorectal cancer: a qualitative study

Yun-Jen Chou, Ya-Ching Wang, Been-Ren Lin, Shiow-Ching Shun

Summary: The aim of this study was to explore the process of resilience in individuals with colorectal cancer (CRC). The findings revealed that resilience is a dynamic three-phase process, including the impact of CRC, adaptation or maladaptation following CRC, and growth from CRC experience. Resilience strategies, avoidance behaviors, and passive waiting strategy were shown across the resilience process. Some individuals used resilience strategies to promote positive adjustment and develop their resilience process.
