With low energy intensity and great potential for growth, the commercial sector has become one of the key sectors for energy conservation and emission reduction in the context of China's rapid urbanization process. Based on the EIA (Energy Information Administration) statistical methods, this paper calculates the energy consumption of China's commercial sector from 1981 to 2012, specifies the determinants of commercial energy demand, forecasts future energy consumption and estimates the energy conservation potentials using the Johansen co-integration methodology. The results indicate: (i) GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and urbanization have positive effects on the energy consumption of the commercial sector while labor productivity and energy price contribute to reduction in the sector's energy consumption. (ii) Under the basic scenario, energy consumption of the commercial sector will be 317.34 and 469.84 Mtce (million tons of coal equivalent) in 2015 and 2020 respectively. (iii) Under the moderate and advanced scenario, about 187.00 and 531.45 Mtce respectively of the energy consumption of the commercial sector can be conserved from 2013 to 2020. The findings have important implications for policy-makers to enact energy-saving policies. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Where will go for electric vehicles in China after the government subsidy incentives are abolished? A controversial consumer perspective

Lei Shi, Rongxin Wu, Boqiang Lin

Summary: The study found that consumers have weak awareness of the green attributes of EVs, with significant perception only when consumers feel a sense of social responsibility. Transferring government subsidies to consumers is not feasible when subsidies are completely abolished.

A decoupling process of Pakistan?s agriculture sector: Insights from energy and economic perspectives

Muhammad Yousaf Raza, Rongxin Wu, Boqiang Lin

Summary: This study analyzes the decomposition of agricultural energy and its decoupling with economic output in Pakistan from 1981 to 2020. The results show that agricultural economic output is the major factor influencing energy consumption. Agricultural energy intensity and total agricultural land exhibit increasing returns to scale, while agricultural labor intensity has mixed effects. Strong and expansive negative decoupling is observed, suggesting the potential for further achieving strong decoupling through the use of energy technologies. The findings highlight the importance of adopting diverse energy sources, energy management, increased capital investment, and skilled labor to cope with the increasing energy consumption in the agriculture sector.

Assessing consumption-based carbon footprint of China's food industry in global supply chain

Boqiang Lin, Chunxu Guan

Summary: With the growth of industrialization and demand, carbon emissions in China's food industry have increased significantly over the past two decades. However, the uncertainty in emission levels within China's food industry and the global supply chain hinder the implementation of sustainable food policies. This study estimates the carbon footprint of China's food manufacturing industry both domestically and internationally, identifies major trade partners and corresponding industries, and decomposes the determinants of carbon footprint change. The results indicate that agriculture, food industry, transport, and energy supply play significant roles in carbon emission growth. Additionally, increasing demand, consumption pattern changes, and energy efficiency improvements affect the emission level. Policy recommendations are provided based on the decomposition results.

Evaluation and determinants of total unified efficiency of China's manufacturing sector under the carbon neutrality target

Boqiang Lin, Chunxu Guan

Summary: China has one of the strongest manufacturing industries in the world, but the carbon emissions from its production pose a serious threat to the environment. This study evaluates the efficiency of China's manufacturing industry using data envelopment analysis and examines the factors that affect its efficiency using a panel regression model. The results show regional and sectoral heterogeneity in efficiency, with slower growth in efficiency in the western and inland regions compared to the coastal areas, and lower efficiency in the light manufacturing industry compared to heavy manufacturing. Factors such as labor quality, industrial agglomeration, and environmental regulation positively impact efficiency, while R&D investment and openness have a negative impact. The study suggests policy measures to focus on nurturing specialized talent, promoting point-to-point manufacturing agglomeration, and unifying emission standards nationwide, while also being cautious of emissions from foreign-funded manufacturing enterprises and setting emission standards for manufactured goods exports.

Primary fossil energy cost and price regulation in energy processing sectors---the perspective of price regulation market with Chinese characteristics

Zhijie Jia, Boqiang Lin

Summary: All energy processing enterprises in China are state-owned and their product prices are regulated by the government. The dynamic recursive computable general equilibrium model (CEEEA/CGE model) is used to simulate and analyze the impact of changes in primary fossil energy costs and the effects of price regulation in these energy processing sectors. The results show that price regulation stabilizes the economy and reduces the impact of energy cost fluctuations, whether positive or negative. Other findings include the resource curse phenomenon when primary energy costs are dramatically reduced, minimal increase in the consumer price index (CPI) despite significant energy cost increases, and the asymmetric economic impact of changes in fossil energy costs.

The effect of industrial synergy and division on energy intensity: From the perspective of industrial chain

Boqiang Lin, Yuqiang Teng

Summary: The essence of industrial chain structure optimization is to strengthen the synergy and division ability among sectors, which is crucial for reducing energy intensity and achieving carbon neutrality goals. This paper completed the China's non-competitive input-output table from 2000 to 2020, constructed industrial synergy and division index using structural path analysis method, and examined its development trend. Combining with a two-way fixed effects model, we explored the influence of industrial synergy and division on energy intensity. The research found that China's industrial synergy and division development level shows an upward trend, and it significantly reduces sectoral energy intensity, particularly for sectors with high energy dependence. This research provides targeted policy suggestions for China to optimize its industrial structure and has reference significance for other countries.

Effectiveness of energy depletion, green growth, and technological cooperation grants on CO2 emissions in Pakistan's perspective

Boqiang Lin, Sami Ullah

Summary: According to Pakistan's Nationally Determined Contribution, the country aims to reduce its emissions by 50% by 2030, with 15% coming from domestic resources and 35% contingent on international grant financing, requiring USD 101 billion for energy transition. This study examines the impact of energy depletion, green growth, technological cooperation grants, and labor force on CO2 emissions in Pakistan. The findings suggest that energy depletion leads to environmental contamination in the long run, while green growth, technological cooperation grants, and labor force contribute to the reduction of environmental contaminations.

A novel prediction method of fuel consumption for wing-diesel hybrid vessels based on feature construction

Zhang Ruan, Lianzhong Huang, Kai Wang, Ranqi Ma, Zhongyi Wang, Rui Zhang, Haoyang Zhao, Cong Wang

Summary: This paper proposes a grey box model for fuel consumption prediction of wing-diesel hybrid vessels based on feature construction. By using both parallel and series grey box modeling methods and six machine learning algorithms, twelve combinations of prediction models are established. A feature construction method based on the aerodynamic performance of the wing and the energy relationship of the hybrid system is introduced. The best combination is obtained by considering the root mean square error, and it shows improved accuracy compared to the white box model. The proposed grey box model can accurately predict the daily fuel consumption of wing-diesel hybrid vessels, contributing to operational optimization and the greenization and decarbonization of the shipping industry.
