Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between 25-OH vitamin D (25OHD) levels and prognosis, mortality, mechanical ventilation, and orotracheal intubation in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The study found a positive correlation between 25OHD levels and oxygenation levels, and significantly lower levels in patients requiring mechanical ventilation and intubation. Patients with severe 25OHD deficiency had longer hospital stays and higher mortality rates. Additionally, supplementation with calcifediol reduced hospitalization duration and mortality rates.

Summary: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have lower vitamin D levels and the deficiency is strongly correlated with ASD severity. Vitamin D supplementation can significantly reduce ASD severity, but the effect may vary between treatment and control groups. Variations in vitamin D dose protocols and concurrent interventions may contribute to the variability of results. The age of introducing vitamin D intervention may also affect the effectiveness of treatment. Further long-term, well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm the impact of vitamin D on severity in children with ASD.

Summary: In a population with optimal blood pressure control, lower values of mechano-energetic efficiency index (MEEi) at baseline were found to identify hypertensive patients who are more likely to develop left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) reduction. Evaluation of MEEi improves risk stratification for the development of LV systolic dysfunction during long-term follow-up in hypertensive patients.

Summary: In addition to well-known risk factors, cardiovascular events may also be associated with epigenetic and genetic alterations. This study found that the MTHFR C677T gene variant is related to increased cardiovascular risk. Interestingly, even with normal homocysteine levels, heterozygous carriers of this gene variant have an augmented risk of cardiovascular accidents, suggesting the presence of additional deregulated processes. The study suggests that targeting SIRT1 activation could be a new therapeutic strategy to control cardiovascular risk in MTHFR carriers.

It found that around one-third of women with HFrEF had TD, which significantly affected their morbidity and mortality. TD was associated with a worse clinical profile including exercise capacity, right ventricular-pulmonary arterial coupling, and renal function.
