The importance of hydraulic architecture to the distribution patterns of trees in a central Amazonian forest

Species distributions and assemblage composition may be the result of trait selection through environmental filters. Here, we ask whether filtering of species at the local scale could be attributed to their hydraulic architectural traits, revealing the basis of hydrological micro-habitat partitioning in a Central Amazonian forest. We analyzed the hydraulic characteristics at tissue (anatomical traits, wood specific gravity (WSG)), organ (leaf area, specific leaf area (SLA), leaf area : sapwood area ratio) and whole-plant (height) levels for 28 pairs of congeneric species from 14 genera restricted to either valleys or plateaus of a terra-firme forest in Central Amazonia. On plateaus, species had higher WSG, but lower mean vessel area, mean vessel hydraulic diameter, sapwood area and SLA than in valleys; traits commonly associated with hydraulic safety. Mean vessel hydraulic diameter and mean vessel area increased with height for both habitats, but leaf area and leaf area : sapwood area ratio investments with tree height declined in valley vs plateau species. [Correction added after online publication 29 March 2017: the preceding sentence has been reworded.] Two strategies for either efficiency or safety were detected, based on vessel size or allocation to sapwood. In conclusion, contrasting hydrological conditions act as environmental filters, generating differences in species composition at the local scale. This has important implications for the prediction of species distributions under future climate change scenarios.

Summary: This study investigated the geographic patterns and ecological correlates of the most common tree dispersal modes in Amazonia, including endozoochory, synzoochory, anemochory, and hydrochory. The results showed that anemochory was positively associated with mean annual wind speed, while hydrochory was higher in flooded forests. The availability of resources for constructing zoochorous fruits did not explain the distribution of dispersal modes. Further research is needed to understand the association between frugivores and the proportional abundance of zoochory.

When are buttresses and stilt roots necessary for a tree in terra-firme Amazonian forests?

Summary: Determinants of the occurrence of buttress and stilt roots are still poorly understood, as they could be influenced by individual properties or environmental factors or both. This study used a large dataset to investigate how tree and environmental properties interact to determine the occurrence of support structures in the central Amazonia. The results showed that support structures were more common in large trees and valleys, influenced by species turnover along topography and intraspecific variation in the development of buttresses. The height-diameter relationship was found to be the most important determinant of buttress occurrence.

Summary: Tropical forests in the Amazon region are facing increasing climate risk, but our understanding of their resistance to water stress is limited. This study uses a standardized hydraulic traits dataset to assess regional variation in drought sensitivity and the ability of hydraulic traits to predict species distributions and forest biomass accumulation. It finds that HSM50, a measure of hydraulic safety margin, is the significant predictor of observed decadal-scale changes in forest biomass. Continued climate change is expected to reduce HSM50 in the Amazon, with implications for the Amazon carbon sink.

Summary: Over the past three decades, studies on tree diversity in South America have mainly focused on trees with certain stem diameters, while neglecting the largest canopy and emergent trees. In this study, a machine learning approach was used to analyze the importance of environmental factors in predicting tree species diversity in the Brazilian Amazon. Environmental variables related to disturbances were found to influence the diversity of large trees, while variables related to resources were more important for overall tree diversity. The study also identified specific regions with high diversity of large trees and general tree species diversity, highlighting the role of climatic and topographic stability in promoting species diversity.

Assessing the agreement between the pneumatic and the flow-centrifuge method for estimating xylem safety in temperate diffuse-porous tree species

Summary: The increasing frequency of global change-type droughts has created a need for fast, accurate and widely applicable techniques for estimating xylem embolism resistance to improve forecasts of future forest changes. This study compared two rapid methods for constructing xylem vulnerability curves and evaluated their agreement and sensitivity to measurement duration. The results highlight the value of the Pneumatron as an easy and reliable tool to estimate embolism thresholds for a wide range of temperate angiosperms.

Double stress of waterlogging and drought drives forest-savanna coexistence
