Peripheral nerve injury and regeneration is a challenging scientific field with relevant clinical implications. Most peripheral nerve regeneration studies have been mainly carried out on rodents. However, it is important to note that the validity of the rodent as a model to study nerve injury and regeneration and translate these results into clinical practice has been questioned by several researchers. To overcome this problem, some investigators have used companion animals and large animal species as models for experimental peripheral nerve regeneration studies. Live sheep are often used in biomedical research because of availability, simplicity of care and housing, cost and body weight similar to humans and acceptance by society as a research animal. Despite these advantages, studies on nerve regeneration and repair in sheep have only been undertaken a few decades ago and compared to rat and mice experimental studies, there are much fewer investigations. The authors have compiled and sorted the available literature on experimental ovine nerve studies in order to guide the peripheral nerve investigator in choosing clinically relevant and interpretable models for studies on neural regeneration that are much needed in order to make progress towards new surgical and medical treatment of peripheral nerves.

Cellulose-Based Scaffolds: A Comparative Study for Potential Application in Articular Cartilage

Rachel Cordeiro, Rui D. D. Alvites, Ana C. C. Sousa, Bruna Lopes, Patricia Sousa, Ana C. C. Mauricio, Nuno Alves, Carla Moura

Summary: Osteoarthritis is a prevalent disease causing cartilage loss, and tissue engineering with different cellulose incorporated poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffolds shows promise for its repair. The study manufactured and characterized PCL scaffolds with various percentages of commercial cellulose (microcrystalline and methyl cellulose) or cellulose from agro-industrial residues (corncob). The results indicate that cellulose incorporation promotes cellular adhesion/proliferation, and methyl cellulose scaffolds demonstrate compressive properties closer to native cartilaginous tissue.

Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA in Livestock: Antimicrobial Resistance and Genetic Lineages

Vanessa Silva, Sara Araujo, Andreia Monteiro, Jose Eira, Jose Eduardo Pereira, Luis Maltez, Gilberto Igrejas, Teresa Semedo Lemsaddek, Patricia Poeta

Summary: Animal production involves the use of antimicrobial agents to promote growth and treat diseases, but it also leads to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA poses a significant threat to public health and animal welfare. Livestock-associated MRSA (LA-MRSA) was initially restricted to a specific clonal complex (CC398), but its diversity has increased over time, accompanied by multidrug resistance. This review summarizes the main clonal lineages of MRSA associated with different animals, including swine, cattle, rabbits, and poultry, and highlights the multidrug resistance patterns.

Summary: This study developed a treatment method that promotes tissue regeneration by injecting equine synovial stem cells and autologous serum into the lesion site. After treatment, all horses underwent a physical rehabilitation program and were monitored with physical and ultrasonographic exams. The results were very promising, supporting the use of equine synovial stem cells and autologous serum in the treatment of tendonitis and desmitis.

Antimicrobial Resistance and Clonal Lineages of Escherichia coli from Food-Producing Animals

Adriana Silva, Vanessa Silva, Jose Eduardo Pereira, Luis Maltez, Gilberto Igrejas, Patricia Valentao, Virgilio Falco, Patricia Poeta

Summary: Escherichia coli (E. coli) is an important pathogenic bacteria commonly found in livestock, serving as a carrier of drug-resistant genes between humans, animals, and the environment. The use of antimicrobials in food-producing animals, especially in the food chain, is a significant contributor to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) development and spread. This review focuses on the clonal lineages and resistance profiles of E. coli, including extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) producing E. coli, in various food-producing animals such as pigs, poultry, cattle, fish farming, and rabbits. The presence of ESBL-producing E. coli was found to be prevalent among farm animals, with high resistance rates to tetracycline and ampicillin observed in farms worldwide. There is an urgent need for a better understanding of the epidemiology of E. coli and ESBL-producing E. coli in livestock, as animal production plays a major role in the global antibiotic resistance problem, necessitating a One Health approach.

Bioelectrical State of Bacteria Is Linked to Growth Dynamics and Response to Neurotransmitters: Perspectives for the Investigation of the Microbiota-Brain Axis

David Munoz-Rodriguez, Marwane Bourqqia-Ramzi, Maria Teresa Garcia-Esteban, Antonio Murciano-Cespedosa, Alejandro Vian, Juan Lombardo-Hernandez, Pablo Garcia-Perez, Francisco Conejero, Alvaro Mateos Gonzalez, Stefano Geuna, Celia Herrera-Rincon

Summary: Inter-cellular communication involve biochemical, biophysical, and bioelectrical signals, which can occur between cells from the same tissue or animal species, as well as between cells that are evolutionarily distant. This paper presents a method for assessing the bioelectrical state of two bacterial strains and monitoring their bioelectrical profile during growth, revealing functional links between membrane potential and population growth. The study also demonstrates that bacteria respond to neural signals by changing their membrane potential, highlighting the potential for studying the relationship between bacteria and the brain in the context of the gut microbiota-brain axis.

Summary: To tackle wildfires and improve forest biomass management, cost effective and reliable mowing and pruning robots are required. However, the development of visual perception systems for forestry robotics needs to be researched and explored to achieve safe solutions. This paper presents a dataset and benchmark for the development of vision perception systems in forestry operations. The dataset consists of annotated images and enabled the training and evaluation of nine object detectors on different edge-computing hardware. The results showed that YOLOR performed the best as a trunk detector with high precision and inference speed, thus contributing to the advancement of robotic vision perception in forestry.
