Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy and safety of complementary and alternative therapy methods for infantile colic, finding that acupuncture, aromatherapy, and massage were effective in reducing symptoms with no serious side effects reported. Further research is needed to provide more evidence for their use in treating infantile colic.

Summary: Current medical treatments for endometriosis-associated pain have limitations, and Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) shows potential as an alternative or complementary treatment. This study analyzed randomized control trials comparing CHM to other treatments for endometriosis-associated pain, and found that CHM, used alone or in combination with conventional therapies, can effectively relieve pain with fewer side effects.

Summary: This study found that the use of dietary supplements and complementary and alternative medicine is common among community-dwelling older adults in the United States and Australia. Factors such as female sex, US residency, higher education, polypharmacy, and frailty (in women) were significantly associated with higher use of supplements/CAMs.

Summary: This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials on the use of probiotics and symbiotics in treating infantile colic. The results show that probiotics can reduce the crying time of infants, with a more significant effect on exclusively breastfed infants, but the evidence of effectiveness in formula-fed and caesarean-born infants is limited.

Summary: This study investigated the frequency and characteristics of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use in German narcolepsy patients. 15% of patients were using CAM at the time of the survey, and an additional 18% reported past use. The most commonly used CAM treatments were vitamins/trace elements, homeopathy, and meditation. CAM users were more likely to experience side effects from medication and have low adherence to pharmacological treatment.

Summary: The review discusses the progress, challenges, and opportunities in the research of probiotic fermented herbal medicine (PFHM) in traditional Chinese medicine. PFHM offers advantages such as the use of pure strains, controllable process, and production of various active enzymes during fermentation, resulting in positive pharmacological effects. However, the mechanism of PFHM needs further investigation due to the complexity of the chemical composition of traditional Chinese medicine.

Summary: The majority of paediatricians rely solely on clinical experience to diagnose infantile colic, and prefer using probiotic supplements and simethicone as the only medical treatment. They observed clinical benefits from these treatments, such as decreased crying duration and easier gas/stool passage.

Summary: The development of artificial intelligence in complementary and alternative medicine has been rapidly advancing. This systematic scoping review identified three main categories of AI usage in CAM, including acupuncture treatment, tongue and lip diagnoses, and herbal medicine. Future research should focus on verifying and validating these AI models through large-scale clinical trials.

Summary: The systematic review found that oral administration of probiotics to breastfed infants with colic can reduce crying time by at least 50%, while further research is needed to study the efficacy of probiotics in reducing colic symptoms in formula-fed infants. There is currently no evidence to support or refute the efficacy of probiotics in preventing infantile colic.

Summary: Many Asian patients with functional dyspepsia (FD) are unsatisfied with conventional medical treatment and are seeking complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies. However, there is limited research on CAM for FD specifically in an Asian context. Traditional herbal formulas, STW-5, peppermint and caraway, FDgard, black seed oil, and psychotherapy have been used in FD patients, but the evidence supporting their effectiveness is weak. Well-planned, large-scale studies are needed to evaluate the efficacy of CAM in treating FD, especially in Asian countries.

Summary: Weaning infants with adult foods typical of Mediterranean Diet may promote adherence to a healthy diet and result in a more diverse and beneficial gut microbiota. A randomized controlled clinical trial showed that at 36 months, children in the Mediterranean Diet group were more likely to maintain good adherence to the diet, and their mothers were also more inclined to follow the Mediterranean Diet. At 4 years old, children in the Mediterranean Diet group had a more abundant population of beneficial bacteria.

Summary: A comprehensive evaluation of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in children with Down syndrome (DS) revealed a high prevalence of sleep problems and enlarged tonsils and adenoids. Accompanied by orthodontic examination, overnight polygraphy (PG) identified OSA in a significant proportion of DS children, with moderate-severe cases showing higher levels of oxygen desaturation. The study highlights the importance of a coordinated multidisciplinary approach, including PG, in the diagnosis and management of OSA in DS.

Summary: The widespread use of PSA for prostate cancer diagnosis has led to high rates of overdiagnosis and overtreatment. A combination of the Prostate Health Index (PHI) and Proclarix tests can improve risk stratification of PCa patients at initial diagnosis. An artificial neural network model combining kallikrein markers in PHI and cancer-related markers in Proclarix showed increased accuracy in identifying aggressive PCa at initial diagnosis.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the incidence of MIS-C in southern Italy. The cumulative incidence rate of MIS-C in children aged 0-18 years was found to be 3.27 per 100,000 residents. The study analyzed clinical features, treatment, and outcomes, and found gastrointestinal, mucocutaneous, and cardiac involvement to be the most common. Treatment was effective, as no intensive care unit admissions were required, and no cardiac sequelae were found in follow-up echocardiograms after 6 months.

Summary: Purpose of this study was to explore the role of lifestyle and diet in the development and progression of multiple sclerosis (MS) and investigate the potential benefits of diets and dietary supplementations in improving patient outcomes. Findings revealed that there is no universally best diet for MS, but healthy and balanced diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while limiting processed foods, sugar, and saturated fat appear to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and promote a gut microbiota that supports gut and brain barriers. Vitamin D and polyunsaturated fatty acids are the most studied supplements for reducing MS-associated inflammation. In addition, counseling on appropriate diet and maintaining physical activity is recommended for MS prevention and management in both adults and children until more research is available on newer approaches.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and predictive factors of Crohn's disease (CD) in children with ulcerative colitis (UC) after ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA). The results showed that children with UC undergoing IPAA had a high risk of developing subsequent CD, and a decreased preoperative body mass index was identified as a possible predictive factor for new-onset CD.
