Introduction: The present study evaluated and compared the recovery of pectoralis major (PM) and triceps brachii (TB) muscles of trained men after bench press exercise. Methods: Eighteen volunteers performed eight sets of bench press exercise to momentary muscle failure and were evaluated for TB and PM peak torque and total work on an isokinetic dynamometer. Results: PM peak torque and total work remained lower than baseline for 72 and 96h, respectively. TB peak torque was only different from baseline immediately post training, while total work was significantly lower than baseline immediately and 48h after training. Normalized peak torque values were only different between TB and PM at 48h after training. Conclusions: Considering the small and nonsignificant difference between the recovery of TB and PM muscles, the results suggest that bench press exercise may promote a similar stress on these muscles.

Outcomes of the Wingate do not differ when performed in a standing or sitting position

Thalles Guilarducci Costa, Raul Romao Costa, Paulo Gentil, Lucas Carrara do Amaral, Douglas Assis Teles Santos, Mario Hebling Campos, Carlos Alexandre Vieira, Claudio Andre Barbosa de Lira

Summary: The outcomes of the WAnT test do not differ significantly when performed in a sitting or standing position, suggesting that participants can choose the position that is more comfortable for them. This is the first study to evaluate different positions with the original WAnT protocol and with non-athlete subjects.

Body composition adaptations to lower-body plyometric training: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Rodrigo Ramirez-Campillo, Felipe Garcia-Pinillos, Pantelis T. Nikolaidis, Filipe Manuel Clemente, Paulo Gentil, Antonio Garcia-Hermoso

Summary: Plyometric jump training (PJT) has significant effects on body composition parameters among males, increasing leg muscle volume, thigh and calf girth, and muscle pennation angle. However, there is no significant difference in muscle cross-sectional area, body fat, and skinfold thickness between PJT and control groups. The study suggests that PJT is an effective and safe exercise modality for improving muscle size and architecture.

Cycle ergometer training and resistance training similarly increase muscle strength in trained men

Marcelo Henrique Silva, Claudio Andre Barbosa De Lira, James Steele, James P. Fisher, Joao Felipe Mota, Aline Corado Gomes, Paulo Gentil

Summary: The study aimed to compare two different maximal intensity exercise modalities on muscle strength, cardiorespiratory fitness, and lower limb composition in recreationally trained men. The results showed that both cycle ergometer training and leg press training for 5 weeks produced similar strength adaptations, with minimal changes in lower limb composition. Additionally, only the cycle ergometer group increased peak oxygen consumption compared to the leg press group.

Muscle-Skeletal Abnormalities and Muscle Oxygenation during Isokinetic Strength Exercise in Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction Phenotype: A Cross-Sectional Study

Summary: Exercise intolerance is a common issue in heart failure patients, and it is associated with muscle weakness. This study aimed to compare the microcirculatory and muscle characteristics between heart failure patients with HFpEF and HFrEF phenotypes. The researchers found that HFpEF patients showed more pronounced impairments in local microcirculatory dynamics during muscle strength exercise, combined with muscle-skeletal abnormalities detected via ultrasound imaging. These findings may help explain the exercise intolerance observed in HFpEF patients.

Technology and Sleep Quality: Friend or Foe? Let the Exergames Come into Play!

Joao Paulo Pereira Rosa, Paulo Gentil, Beat Knechtle, Rodrigo Luiz Vancini, Mario Hebling Campos, Carlos Alexendre Vieira, Marilia Santos Andrade, Claudio Andre Barbosa de Lira

Summary: This narrative review discusses the potential applications, limitations, and perspectives of using exergames to improve sleep quality. Exergames are a more fun and attractive alternative to traditional forms of physical exercise and have similar physiological and psychological effects. However, there are barriers for people to adopt an active lifestyle.

Summary: This study compared the acute effects of different high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) protocols and moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE) on blood glucose, blood pressure, and heart rate in people with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The study found that HIIE had more significant reductions in blood glucose and blood pressure compared to MICE.

Summary: This study aimed to verify the time course recovery of muscle edema and functional performance after lower-body single-and multi-joint exercises. The results showed that peak torque decreased immediately after the exercises and fully recovered within 24-48 hours. Jump height and power followed the same recovery pattern as peak torque. However, the recovery of muscle thickness varied depending on the exercise type.
