Integral field spectroscopy (IFS) surveys are changing how we study galaxies and are creating vastly more spectroscopic data available than before. The large number of resulting spectra makes visual inspection of emission line fits an infeasible option. Here, we present a demonstration of an artificial neural network (ANN) that determines the number of Gaussian components needed to describe the complex emission line velocity structures observed in galaxies after being fit with LZIFU. We apply our ANN to IFS data for the S7 survey, conducted using the Wide Field Spectrograph on the ANU 2.3m Telescope, and the SAMI Galaxy Survey, conducted using the SAMI instrument on the 4 m Anglo-Australian Telescope. We use the spectral fitting code LZIFU (Ho et al. 2016a) to fit the emission line spectra of individual spaxels from S7 and SAMI data cubes with 1-, 2- and 3-Gaussian components. We demonstrate that using an ANN is comparable to astronomers performing the same visual inspection task of determining the best number of Gaussian components to describe the physical processes in galaxies. The advantage of our ANN is that it is capable of processing the spectra for thousands of galaxies in minutes, as compared to the years this task would take individual astronomers to complete by visual inspection.

Summary: This study explores and identifies non-axisymmetric features in the Milky Way's disk using Gaia DR3 data. Spiral structures associated with star formation are mapped using hot OB stars and young open clusters, while the large-scale kinematic signature of the bar in the inner disc and streaming motions in the outer disc are revealed using red giant branch stars. The results provide valuable insights into the dynamical nature of the Milky Way's non-axisymmetric structures.

Summary: Recent research shows that the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) significantly impacts the Milky Way's stellar halo and stellar streams. This study examines how deformations of the Milky Way and LMC's dark matter haloes affect stellar streams and investigates if these effects can be observed. The Orphan-Chenab (OC) stream, which passes close to the LMC and spans a large portion of the Milky Way's halo, is the main focus. Using a basis function expansion, the Milky Way-LMC system is represented to capture their evolution in an N-body simulation. The study finds that the simulated OC stream is strongly influenced by the deformations of both the Milky Way and LMC, and these effects are larger than current observational errors. The Milky Way dipole has the greatest impact on the stream, followed by the evolution of the LMC's monopole and quadrupole. Detecting these effects would confirm a key prediction of collisionless, cold dark matter and serve as a powerful test for alternative dark matter and alternative gravity models.

MOSEL survey: extremely weak outflows in EoR analogues at z=3-4

Anshu Gupta, Kim-Vy Tran, Trevor Mendel, Anishya Harshan, Ben Forrest, R. L. Davies, Emily Wisnioski, Themiya Nanayakkara, Glenn G. Kacprzak, Lisa J. Kewley

Summary: This paper presents deep K-band spectroscopic observations of galaxies at z = 3 - 4 with composite photometric rest-frame H beta+[O III ] 5007 equivalent widths (EW0) > 600 Å, comparable to the EW of galaxies observed during the epoch of reionization (EoR, z > 6). By stacking the [O III] 5007 emission profiles, evidence of a weak broad component is found, and its strength and velocity width do not change significantly with stellar mass and [O III] 5007 EW0 of the stacked sample. The weak signature of outflows in the EoR analogues may be due to the multiphase nature of supernovae driven outflows or the suppression of winds in the extreme star-forming regime.

Summary: Gravitational lenses can magnify distant galaxies, allowing us to observe intrinsically faint galaxies that are otherwise difficult to observe directly. In this study, two lensed, quiescent galaxies at high redshift were analyzed, revealing their ages and chemical compositions. These lensed galaxies have lower metallicity and comparable alpha-to-iron ratios to lower-redshift galaxies of similar masses, providing insights into their early quenching and star formation history.

The Rapid Onset of Stellar Bars in the Baryon-dominated Centers of Disk Galaxies

Joss Bland-Hawthorn, Thor Tepper-Garcia, Oscar Agertz, Ken Freeman

Summary: Recent observations have found a negative correlation between baryon surface density and dark matter fraction in high-redshift galactic disks. This implies that early massive galaxies are dominated by baryons over dark matter, similar to the Milky Way. Stellar bars are shown to form quickly in these disks at early times, leading to a high bar fraction as observed by the James Webb Space Telescope. The formation time of these bars depends on the disk mass fraction, with a faster formation time for higher disk fractions.

The SAMI-Fornax Dwarfs Survey - III. Evolution of [α/Fe] in dwarfs, from Galaxy Clusters to the Local Group

J. Romero-Gomez, Reynier F. Peletier, J. A. L. Aguerri, Steffen Mieske, Nicholas Scott, Joss Bland-Hawthorn, Julia J. Bryant, Scott M. Croom, F. Sara Eftekhari, Jesus Falcon-Barroso, Michael Hilker, Glenn van de Ven, Aku Venhola

Summary: Using the SAMI Integral Field Spectrograph, the stellar population properties of dwarf galaxies in the Fornax Cluster were studied. The mass-metallicity relation was found to be non-linear and the [alpha/Fe]-stellar mass relation showed a U-shape. The relation between [alpha/Fe] and stellar mass was explained by the rapid burst of star formation and gas blowing away in faint galaxies, while more massive galaxies had longer gas retention and several bursts of star formation.

The SAMI survey: evidence for dynamical coupling of ionized gas and young stellar populations

Caroline Foster, Sam Vaughan, Amelia Fraser-McKelvie, Sarah Brough, Julia J. Bryant, Scott M. Croom, Francesco D'Eugenio, Brent Groves, Iraklis S. Konstantopoulos, Angel R. Lopez-Sanchez, Sree Oh, Matt S. Owers, Sarah M. Sweet, Jesse van de Sande, Emily Wisnioski, Sukyoung K. Yi, Henry R. M. Zovaro

Summary: We examine the differences in dynamics between ionized gas and stars in galaxies. Local velocities and dispersion of gas and stars agree better in younger systems, suggesting initial coupling. The scatter in velocity and dispersion relations increases with stellar age and mass, indicating the role of subsequent mechanisms. Older galaxies have hotter global dynamical support and ionized gas is generally colder than stars. The local difference in velocity dispersion is more pronounced than the local difference in velocity, possibly due to turbulence, inflow, and feedback.

The formation pathways of compact elliptical galaxies

Simon Deeley, Michael J. Drinkwater, Sarah M. Sweet, Kenji Bekki, Warrick J. Couch, Duncan A. Forbes

Summary: By combining observational and simulation data, it has been found that compact elliptical galaxies have two main formation pathways: stripping from a larger host galaxy and gradual buildup of stellar mass in isolated environments. The proportions are 32% and 68% respectively. The observed differences between isolated and host-associated compact elliptical galaxies can be fully explained by the dominance of different formation pathways in each environment.
