Adhesin-mediated bacterial interspecies interactions are important elements in oral biofilm formation. They often occur on a species-specific level, which could determine health or disease association of a biofilm community. Among the key players involved in these processes are the ubiquitous fusobacteria that have been recognized for their ability to interact with numerous different binding partners. Fusobacterial interactions with Streptococcus mutans, an important oral cariogenic pathogen, have previously been described but most studies focused on binding to non-mutans streptococci and specific cognate adhesin pairs remain to be identified. Here, we demonstrated differential binding of oral fusobacteria to S.mutans. Screening of existing mutant derivatives indicated SpaP as the major S.mutans adhesin specific for binding to Fusobacterium nucleatum ssp. polymorphum but none of the other oral fusobacteria tested. We inactivated RadD, a known adhesin of F.nucleatum ssp. nucleatum for interaction with a number of gram-positive species, in F.nucleatum ssp. polymorphum and used a Lactococcus lactis heterologous SpaP expression system to demonstrate SpaP interaction with RadD of F.nucleatum ssp. polymorphum. This is a novel function for SpaP, which has mainly been characterized as an adhesin for binding to host proteins including salivary glycoproteins. In conclusion, we describe an additional role for SpaP as adhesin in interspecies adherence with RadD-SpaP as the interacting adhesin pair for binding between S.mutans and F.nucleatum ssp. polymorphum. Furthermore, S.mutans attachment to oral fusobacteria appears to involve species- and subspecies-dependent adhesin interactions.

Contact characteristic parameters modeling for the assembled structure with bolted joints

Wenbo Shi, Zhousuo Zhang

Summary: This study presents a new contact characteristic parameters model for bolted joint interfaces, which overcomes the shortcomings of homogeneous distributions of contact stiffness and damping in previous models. By transforming the contact pressure distribution into normal contact load distribution, it is found that the interfacial contact stiffness and damping exhibit significant inhomogeneous distributions.

New mechanistic insights into the effect of cations on membrane fouling caused by anionic polyacrylamide

Bing Zhang, Heli Tang, Jinyu Chen, Bing Zhang, Yu Shen, Wenxin Shi

Summary: Understanding the effect of cations on membrane fouling is important, with higher ionic strength leading to increased membrane fouling and decreased flux recovery rate. Ca2+ was found to be more effective than Na+ in mitigating membrane fouling.

Oral colonization of Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans in children with or without fixed orthodontic appliances: A pilot

Fang Yang, Marcia Dinis, Farnoosh Haghighi, Xuesong He, Wenyuan Shi, Nini Chaichanasakul Tran

Summary: This pilot investigation aimed to study the colonization of Candida albicans (Ca) and Streptococcus mutans (Sm) in adolescents undergoing fixed orthodontic therapy. The study found higher levels of Ca in saliva and occlusal plaque in the FOA group, while the control group had higher levels of Sm. Additionally, a disruption in the relationship between Ca and Sm was observed in the FOA group, indicating that the presence of FOAs disturbs the colonization of these pathogens in the oral cavity.

Electrochemical surface reconstructed Ptx(x=2,3)Si/PtSi/p-Si photocathodes for achieving high efficiency in photoelectrochemical H2 generation

Haoyue Zhang, Guangwei She, Jing Xu, Shengyang Li, Yun Liu, Jun Luo, Wensheng Shi

Summary: In this study, a Ptx(x=2,3)Si/PtSi/p-Si photocathode was designed and fabricated to improve the photovoltage and enhance the hydrogen evolution reaction kinetics for efficient H-2 generation via PEC. The use of dopant segregation elevated the Schottky barrier height, leading to a high photovoltage, while in situ formation of a high catalytic activity Ptx(x=2,3)Si layer on the photocathode significantly enhanced the HER kinetics. The photocathode achieved a favorable onset potential for HER and a high saturated photocurrent density, with a maximum ABPE of 5.8% and excellent stability in long-term PEC H-2 generation testing.

Wentao Shi, Chen Dong, Zhou Lin, Bai Ke, Jin Yong

Summary: In this paper, a novel sensor selection method considering uncertainty disturbance is proposed for effective target detection in a multisensor cooperative detection network. The method models the sensor selection problem as a binary form optimization problem and quantifies the factors affecting the selection scheme. The proposed method ensures the minimum number of sensors and improves the accuracy of state estimation, as evidenced by simulation results.

Perylenetetracarboxylic acid nanosheets with internal electric fields and anisotropic charge migration for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Yan Guo, Qixin Zhou, Jun Nan, Wenxin Shi, Fuyi Cui, Yongfa Zhu

Summary: This study synthesized perylenetetracarboxylic acid nanosheets with a thickness of approximately 1.5 nm and demonstrated their activity as highly efficient hydrogen evolution photocatalysts. The introduction of carboxyl groups increased the internal electric fields, promoting charge-carrier separation, and weakened charge-carrier recombination by migrating photogenerated electrons and holes to the edge and plane, respectively. Furthermore, the reduction potential and hydrophilic sites of perylenetetracarboxylic acid were enhanced. This work provides a strategy for designing future efficient photocatalysts.

Buddhism and M&A performance: Evidence from China

Wen Shi, Xiaogang Bi

Summary: This research examines the impact of Buddhism on mergers & acquisitions (M&As) performance using data from 4622 M&A transactions of Chinese public firms between 2004 and 2018. The findings provide ample evidence that acquirers located in regions with a higher intensity of Buddhism achieve better short-term and long-term performance after the merger. Furthermore, the study reveals that state ownership plays a crucial role in mitigating this effect, and the value creation is driven by higher deal completion rates and fewer violation cases for acquiring firms. Finally, the study addresses the issue of endogeneity, and the results remain unchanged.
