Enlargement of the surface area of Al foils was carried out through the electrochemical insertion and deinsertion of Li. The electrochemical insertion and deinsertion of Li generated a fine porous structure on the surface of the Al foils. The specific surface area increased with the number of insertion and deinsertion cycles of Li and reached 300. This process can be applied to the effective enlargement of the surface area of Al foils, which is essential for increasing the capacitance of Al electrolytic capacitors. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
