Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the potential risk factors for nosocomial bloodstream infections in hospitalized patients with COVID-19, including corticosteroid dosage and treatment duration. The study found that male sex, receiving methylprednisolone, receiving an equivalent dexamethasone dose of 6-12 mg/day, and leukocytosis on admission were significant predictors of nosocomial bloodstream infections.

Summary: The occurrence of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is associated with increased mortality, but whether it predisposes to new infection is unclear. This study found that HE is an independent risk factor for de novo infection in cirrhotic patients with acute decompensation.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the presence of high-risk HPV genotypes in patients with periodontitis and a pronounced clinical picture. Significant differences were found in HPV positive results between the periodontitis positive group and the control group. The presence of high-risk HPV genotypes, associated with periodontitis-causing bacteria, was confirmed.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether decreased serum fetuin-A concentration could identify patients with Wilson's disease who developed cirrhosis. The results showed that fetuin-A concentration negatively correlated with disease duration and bilirubin level, and was a significant determinant of having cirrhosis. Among patients with liver involvement, a fetuin-A level of 523 μg/ml was associated with cirrhosis with 82% sensitivity and 87% specificity.

Summary: The objectives of this study are to estimate the relationship between obesity (BMI >= 30) and the prevalence of melanoma in different US states, and to examine the possibility of defining a new risk group. The results show a negative correlation between obesity and the incidence of melanoma, especially in the high-risk Caucasian subgroup. It is concluded that primary prevention and secondary prevention measures should be continued, including raising awareness of photoprotection and promoting skin screening among the entire population group, with a focus on the high-risk Caucasian subgroup with BMI < 30.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to analyze the prevalence of apical periodontitis and periodontal disease in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients and their relation to the treatment phase. The results showed that oral infections are more prevalent in advanced stages of CKD. Therefore, the treatment of periodontal disease and apical periodontitis should be considered in the treatment planning for CKD patients.

Summary: This study found that patients with GERD have a higher risk of developing periodontitis compared to those without GERD. Age, sex, and the presence of comorbidities also increase the risk of periodontitis in GERD patients. An increased number of emergency room visits is associated with a higher risk of periodontitis.

Summary: This study indicates that patients with concomitant liver cirrhosis undergoing curative esophagectomy for malignant disease have worse perioperative outcomes, including higher mortality, anastomotic leakage rate, and sepsis occurrence. Common cirrhosis scores failed to accurately predict the prognosis of these patients, while bilirubin and INR may serve as better prognostic indicators for perioperative outcomes.

Summary: This research aimed to study the level of knowledge, attitude, practice, and confidence of dental undergraduate students in Malaysia towards evidence-based dental practice. The findings revealed that most students displayed a positive attitude towards evidence-based dentistry, but only a portion of them practiced it frequently. Additionally, the type of dental curriculum had a significant association with practice and attitude towards evidence-based dental knowledge and practice.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of gingivitis on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among 12-year-old schoolchildren from Quito, Ecuador. The results showed that 93% of the students had gingival bleeding and 73% had dental calculus. Gingival bleeding was negatively associated with OHRQoL, and male students and those with parents with lower education levels had lower OHRQoL. The presence of gingival bleeding in more than one sextant was significantly associated with decreased quality of life in emotional well-being and social well-being domains.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the radiographic outcomes of equine-derived collagenated xenogeneic bone blocks (CXBB) and autogenous bone blocks (ABB) used for lateral alveolar ridge augmentation. Results showed significant gains in bone thickness with both methods, but CXBB led to vertical bone loss while ABB resulted in vertical bone gain.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate microbial colonization in different dentition phases among individuals from 0 to 18 years old with a family history of periodontitis compared to descendants of periodontally healthy parents. The results showed that the parents' periodontal status significantly affected the microbiome composition of their offspring, and descendants with a family history of periodontitis exhibited different microbial diversity and a higher prevalence of periodontitis-associated species in the mixed and permanent dentition phases.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the influence of supracrestal tissue height on peri-implant tissue remodeling in esthetic areas. The results showed that implants with thin supracrestal tissue height had greater bone loss and papillary recession than implants with thick soft tissue height, even when using the one abutment-one time concept. Supracrestal tissue height plays a significant role in peri-implant tissue remodeling.

Summary: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the methodological quality and consistency of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) in Periodontology. A total of 11 CPGs were included and assessed using the AGREE II instrument. The results showed high overall quality of the CPGs and consistency of recommendations in specific fields of periodontics. These findings have important implications for researchers and clinicians in promoting and improving clinical decision-making in periodontics.

Summary: Accumulated evidence suggests that the oral cavity may serve as a reservoir for SARS-CoV-2, and the use of mouthrinses has been proposed to reduce viral load in saliva. However, a review of nine randomized controlled trials found that while mouthrinses showed an intra-group reduction in salivary virus levels compared to baseline, there was no significant inter-group difference between active groups and the control group in terms of decreasing salivary SARS-CoV-2 loads. Larger trials are needed to confirm these promising results.

Summary: This study found that exosomal profiles can be used as a tool for early detection of relapse and long-term outcomes in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients undergoing conventional therapy. The study observed a significant reduction in exosome levels after surgery and higher exosome concentrations in patients experiencing relapse. Lower exosome levels before surgery were correlated with better disease-free survival.

Summary: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a potential therapeutic modality that has been recognized for its favorable mechanisms in various diseases, including sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE). HBOT has neuroprotective effects through its anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic effects as well as increased tissue oxygenation capacity. However, there are caveats and limitations in applying HBOT in sepsis.
