Recent epidemiologic studies evidence a dramatic increase of cardiovascular diseases, especially associated with the aging of the world population. During aging, the progressive impairment of the cardiovascular functions results from the compromised tissue abilities to protect the heart against stress. At the molecular level, in fact, a gradual weakening of the cellular processes regulating cardiovascular homeostasis occurs in aging cells. Atherosclerosis and heart failure are particularly correlated with aging-related cardiovascular senescence, that is, the inability of cells to progress in the mitotic program until completion of cytokinesis. In this review, we explore the intrinsic and extrinsic causes of cellular senescence and their role in the onset of these cardiovascular pathologies. Additionally, we dissect the effects of aging on the cardiac endogenous and exogenous reservoirs of stem cells. Finally, we offer an overview on the strategies of regenerative medicine that have been advanced in the quest for heart rejuvenation.

Summary: Recently, eSports has emerged as a popular form of new media, thanks to the widespread availability of games and online technologies. Despite ongoing discussions about its definition, eSports athletes undergo rigorous training, compete in tournaments, and must follow rules set by governing bodies, just like traditional athletes. However, like any competitive discipline, eSports players are susceptible to injuries related to their sedentary lifestyle, improper posture, prolonged screen time, and repetitive movements. This paper highlights the importance of conducting pre-participation evaluations and implementing effective injury prevention strategies for professional eSports athletes.

Obesity and Cardiovascular Risk: Systematic Intervention Is the Key for Prevention

Francesco Perone, Annachiara Pingitore, Edoardo Conte, Geza Halasz, Marco Ambrosetti, Mariangela Peruzzi, Elena Cavarretta

Summary: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease events and mortality, as well as other complications such as pre-type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases. While physical activity and diet are important in reducing cardiovascular risk, they are not always successful strategies. Pharmacological treatments and bariatric surgery show promise in improving cardiovascular outcomes, but safety issues and cost restrict their use. Cardiac rehabilitation programs have been shown to improve cardiovascular disease risk factors, quality of life, and exercise capacity in obese patients. A multidisciplinary approach is needed to effectively reduce cardiovascular disease risk and mortality.

An Overview of Sport Participation and Exercise Prescription in Mitral Valve Disease

Francesco Perone, Mariangela Peruzzi, Edoardo Conte, Luigi Sciarra, Giacomo Frati, Elena Cavarretta, Annachiara Pingitore

Summary: The incidence of heart valve disease (HVD) has been increasing due to an aging population, with mitral valve (MV) disease being the second most common type of HVD. Regular physical activity has been proven to reduce mortality rates, but the hemodynamic changes during exercise may worsen the progression of MV disease and potentially trigger major cardiac events. It is important to define criteria for exercise prescription and competitive sport participation in young patients with HVD, balancing the benefits and risks. This review provides an overview of MV disease and encourages physicians to incorporate exercise in their practice when appropriate.
