Nutrient pollution in surface and ground water is one of the world's most widespread, costly and challenging environmental problems, resulting in serious environmental and health issues. This study investigated the removal of low concentration nutrients from synthetic solution simulating slightly nutrient polluted water. Continuous-flow filtration column and hydroponic wetland experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of operating conditions and using zeolite and calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) as functional filtration substrates. The interactions between phosphorus (PO43--P) and nitrogen (NH4+-N and total nitrogen) with hydroponic plants, CSH and zeolite at different hydraulic loading rates (HLR) were found to have significant impacts on nutrient removal. During filtration column experiments, CSH was highly effective for PO43--P removal and achieved an average removal efficiency greater than 90%. Zeolite removed more NH4+-N than CSH, achieving an average removal of 77%. Longer filtration time improved nutrient removal, and the optimal retention time was found to be 12 h. The wetland testing demonstrated nutrient uptake by hydroponic plants played a major role in removal of PO43--P and NH4+-N during plant growth season. Installation of CSH and zeolite functional substrates was critical to ensure stable overall nutrient removal in hydroponic wetlands. The functional substrates provided complementary physical-chemical sorption capacity for PO43--P and NH4+-N, especially when the plants uptake varied between growth and harvest seasons. Higher HLR reduced slightly the overall nutrient removal in wetlands. Throughout the testing period of 70 days, hydroponic wetlands showed no advantage in organic nitrogen removal compared to subsurface flow constructed wetlands. The total nitrogen percent removal was below 30% in both wetland units probably due to lack of microbiological activities in the wetlands resulting from low organic matter in synthetic influent water. Qiuyan Liang, Jinrong Fu, Xiang Wang, Lijuan Liu, Wenfeng Xiao, Yajing Gao, Lan Yang, Hongmiao Yu, Xueru Xie, Zikun Tu, Saihua Huang, Xiao Han, Liling Qian, Yufeng Zhou

Summary: This study identified 372 differentially expressed circRNAs in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of children with asthma. Among them, a circRNA called circS100A11 was highly expressed in monocytes and significantly upregulated in children with asthma. Further experiments demonstrated that circS100A11 promoted M2a macrophage activation by enhancing translation of its host gene, S100A11, and exacerbated lung inflammation in a mouse model of asthma. The study also found that circS100A11 competitively bound to CAPRIN1 to promote S100A11 translation, thereby enhancing M2a macrophage activation.

Securing FPGAs in IoT: a new run-time monitoring technique against hardware Trojan

Jian Cheng, Quanyuan Feng, Chao Li, Wenxiu Yang

Summary: In this paper, a new run-time monitoring technique is proposed to detect hardware Trojans (HT) on working field-programmable gate array (FPGA), which can enhance the hardware security of IoT devices. The technique places multiple temperature sensors on FPGA and collects their values at each time interval. A predictive model is constructed to estimate the real-time distribution of sensor frequency. If the difference between the predicted value and the real one exceeds a dynamically updated threshold, an HT activation is reported. The experiment results demonstrate that the technique achieves high detection accuracy (>= 98%), low false negative ratio (<= 1.5%), and zero false positive ratio under various FPGA HT benchmarks.

Spatial transcriptomes and microbiota reveal immune mechanism that respond to pathogen infection in the posterior intestine of Sebastes schlegelii

Min Cao, Ting Xue, Huijun Huo, Xiaoyan Zhang, Ning Ning Wang, Xu Yan, Chao Li

Summary: Spatial transcriptomes were used to study the transcriptomic landscape in the posterior intestine of Sebastes schlegelii following Edwardsiella piscicida infection. A molecular regionalization of the posterior intestine was observed in the healthy condition. After bacterial infection, immune-related genes were predominantly found in the mucosa layer. The expression of regeneration-related genes suggested the constant proliferation of new cells in response to pathogen invasion, while increasing microbiota communities indicated their role in maintaining intestinal integrity and shaping the mucosal immune system.

An Enhancement Strategy for Macau's Largos from a Syntactic Perspective

Senyu Lou, Yaou Zhang, Chao Li, Jingjing Chen

Summary: This paper focuses on the Largos of the Macau Peninsula and categorizes their main functions as serving the community, facilitating traffic, and promoting religious culture through historical combing and field research. A spatial syntactic theory is applied to establish a model, using three syntactic parameters - synergy, integration, and choice - to interpret the analysis results. Based on the syntactic parameters, the results are divided into four categories, and improvement strategies are proposed for the selected spaces that require enhancements. Taking Macau's Largos as an example, this paper aims to provide a reference for the effective renewal of urban micro-spaces and small public spaces by applying space syntax analysis.

Total parenteral nutrition impairs glucose metabolism by modifying the gut microbiome

Peng Wang, Haifeng Sun, Gulisudumu Maitiabula, Li Zhang, Jianbo Yang, Yupeng Zhang, Xuejin Gao, Jieshou Li, Bin Xue, Chao-Jun Li, Xinying Wang

Summary: Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) can cause glucose metabolism disorders by altering the gut microbiota and its metabolites, leading to insulin resistance and an increased risk of complications. Decreased levels of Lactobacillaceae and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) are associated with these complications, while the abundance of Lactobacillaceae and IAA is negatively correlated with insulin resistance and serum lipopolysaccharide levels. IAA activates the aryl hydrocarbon receptor and increases glucagon-like peptide-1 secretion, preventing TPN-induced glucose metabolism disorders in mice.

Regiospecific deoxygenative deuteration of ketones via HOME chemistry

Ruohua Gui, Chao-Jun Li

Summary: Historically, deuteration reactions were mainly used for mechanistic studies, but their pharmacological importance is now recognized. Efforts have been made to meet the urgent need for deuteration tools since the approval of the first deuterated drug for Huntington's disease. Current deuteration strategies involving reversible H/D exchange have limitations in functional group tolerance and deuterium content. In this study, a ruthenium-catalyzed deoxygenative deuteration of ketones was developed, allowing regiospecific deuteration with high deuterium content.

Summary: This study examined the long-term phosphorus retention in Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs) and identified the factors influencing their performance. The results showed that the operational performance of STAs improved over time. There were notable differences among individual STAs, with the co-precipitation of phosphorus with calcium playing a critical role in one of the STAs. This highlights the complexity of phosphorus removal in STAs and the need for site-specific management strategies.

Biogeochemical response of subtropical treatment wetlands to different flow conditions

Odi Villapando, K. R. Reddy, J. King

Summary: The biogeochemical response to different flow conditions within two parallel flow-ways in Everglades Stormwater Treatment Area (STA)-2 was studied. It was found that there was a gradual decrease in the total phosphorus (TP) concentration from inflow to outflow for both emergent aquatic vegetation (EAV) and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) dominated systems, with EAV showing a higher reduction rate. Significant increase in TP concentration was observed in the SAV system under no flow condition, possibly due to the production of particulate phosphorus (PP) through various mechanisms.
