In the second part of this study, we analyze the free energy of transfer in the case of synergistic solvent extraction. This free energy of the transfer of an ion in dynamic equilibrium between two coexisting phases is decomposed into four driving forces combining long-range interactions with the classical complexation free energy associated with the nearest neighbors. We demonstrate how the organometallic complexation is counterbalanced by the cost in free energy related to structural change on the colloidal scale in the solvent phase. These molecular lormulan forces of synergistic extraction are driven not only by the entropic term associated with the tight packing of electrolytes in the solvent and by the free energy cost of coextracting water toward the hydrophilic core of the reverse aggregates present but 1 also by the entropic costs in the formation of the reverse aggregate and by the interfacial bending energy of the extractant molecules packed around the extracted species. Considering the sum of the terms, we can rationalize the synergy observed, which cannot be explained by classical extraction modeling. We show an industrial synergistic mixture combining an amide and a phosphate complexing site, where the most efficient/selective mixture is observed for a minimal bending energy and maximal complexation energy.

How acidity rules synergism and antagonism in liquid-liquid extraction by lipophilic extractants-Part II: application of the ienaic modelling

M. Spadina, S. Dourdain, J. Rey, K. Bohinc, S. Pellet-Rostaing, Jean-Francois Dufreche, T. Zemb

Summary: This article discusses the application of ienaic modeling for the solvent extraction of rare earths using a mixed DMDOHEMA/HDEHP extractant system. The study compares experimental findings with theoretical predictions of the droplet model, showing that different behaviors in the extraction process depend on the acidity and mole fraction of extractants.

Summary: Efficient formulations in hydrometallurgy often rely on the synergistic action of two oil-soluble extractants at an optimized mole fraction. This study investigates the DMDOHEMA/HDEHP system and how synergistic effects vary with acidity, presenting experimental results and proposing a theoretical model for interpreting the acid effect on synergism and antagonism.

Summary: DEHCNPB is an amido-phosphonic acid with remarkable properties for separating uranium from wet phosphoric acid. Through a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and experimental data, the aggregation of DEHCNPB in organic solutions and the coordination of uranium in such systems have been described in detail. This study highlights the importance of weak interactions in extraction processes and demonstrates the insights provided by molecular simulations in complex organic phase chemistry.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of the mesoporous structure of two silicas MCM-41 and SBA-15 under a 2 MeV electron beam. The results show that irradiation-induced porosity closure is more effective on smaller pores. This phenomenon could potentially be exploited for RadioNuclides encapsulation.

Summary: This study investigates the synthesis of silica-based type I porous liquids by modifying the main synthesis parameters to tune the size of the nanospheres and internal cavities, as well as the silica shell microporosity to control the accessibility of the internal cavities. The key parameters of hollow silica nanospheres for optimized structural and porous properties in the synthesis of type I porous liquids are highlighted in this research.

Recovery of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) Using Ionic Solvents

Guilhem Arrachart, Julien Couturier, Sandrine Dourdain, Clement Levard, Stephane Pellet-Rostaing

Summary: Rare earth elements play crucial roles in advanced technologies, making the development of optimized processes for their recovery necessary. Ionic solvents, including ionic liquids and deep-eutectic solvents, have attracted much attention as an alternative to conventional processes for metal recovery. Significant studies in the last decade regarding the recovery of REEs are presented in this review.

Synthesis of n-dodecylamine borane C12H25NH2BH3, its stability against hydrolysis, and its characterization in THF

Antigoni Theodoratou, Kevin Turani-I-Belloto, Eddy Petit, Sandrine Dourdain, Johan G. Alauzun, Umit B. Demirci

Summary: The study demonstrates that molecular self-assembly of n-dodecylamine borane in anhydrous THF forms core-shell aggregates, with NH2BH3 groups in the core and alkyl chains in the outer layer. However, the compound is unstable in the presence of moisture, hydrolyzing to produce water-soluble borates. Therefore, investigating the behavior and properties of C12AB should be conducted under anhydrous conditions.

Effect of alkyl chains configurations of tertiary amines on uranium extraction and phase stability - part II: Curvature free energy controlling the ion transfer

Zijun Lu, Sandrine Dourdain, Jean-Francois Dufreche, Bruno Deme, Thomas Zemb, Stephane Pellet-Rostaing

Summary: This study presents a structural and thermodynamic analysis of uranium solvent extraction using modified tertiary amines. The results indicate that tertiary amines with longer or branched alkyl chains can adjust phase stability and uranium extraction by modifying the volume of polar species in the organic phase. The experiments confirm that this phenomenon is related to the self-assembly of tertiary amines into smaller reverse micelle-like aggregates for longer or branched alkyl chains. The smaller aggregates also suppress third phase formation by reducing attractive interactions between them. A thermodynamic analysis reveals that alkyl chains significantly influence the aggregate's curvature free energy.

Summary: Amine-based extraction processes are commonly used for selective extraction of uranium from sulfuric leaching liquors. This study investigates the effects of alkyl chain configuration on phase stability and aggregation properties of tertiary amines. The results show that tertiary amines with longer or slightly branched alkyl chains provide better phase stability and enable continuous extraction of uranium.
