Summary: Seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plants produce concentrates that contain minor concentrations of elements, such as lithium, which is highly demanded in the battery industry. This study demonstrates the successful extraction of Li+ from model SWRO brines using the extractants DBM·TOPO and FDOD·TOPO. The extraction values obtained were 95.4% for DBM·TOPO (pH = 12.2) and 100% for FDOD·TOPO (pH = 9.0). The selective separation of Li+ against other cations was also achieved, reaching close to 100% selectivity. This research provides promising results for the selective extraction of lithium in complex SWRO brines.

Summary: Graphene and phosphorene exhibit strong affinity towards DNA/RNA nucleobases, making them promising materials for bioinorganic interfaces. The adsorption of nucleobases onto graphene and phosphorene is mainly driven by electrostatics and dispersion effects, with solvent effects destabilizing the complexes in solution. Phosphorene shows higher destabilization in aqueous solution compared to graphene due to solvent polarity differences.

Summary: Ionic liquids (ILs) are a type of fluid that has unique properties and can be customized for specific applications. Understanding the behavior of ILs on a microscopic scale is crucial for explaining macroscopic fluid phenomena and promoting potential applications. Through a combination of experimental and theoretical methods, it is now possible to study hydrogen bonding, dispersion effects, and their competition in detail. This allows for the detection, analysis, and quantification of noncovalent interactions in complex systems such as ILs. By utilizing spectroscopic, thermodynamic, and theoretical techniques, the relative contributions of Coulomb interactions, hydrogen bonding, and dispersion forces in ILs can be analyzed and quantified.

Summary: A novel bipyridine extractant MSL211 was designed and synthesized, which could form a stable eight-membered chelating ring with Ni(II) due to its strong steric resistance and electrostatic interaction. Through the synergistic extraction of DNNSA-MSL211, direct extraction of Ni(II) from Fe(III), Al(III), Ca(II), Mg(II), and Mn(II) was achieved, avoiding neutralization, precipitation, and solid/liquid separation processes that are commonly used in current processes.

Summary: This study investigated the solvent extraction of different groups of rare earth elements (LREE, MREE, and HREE) from a chloride medium using a mixture of Cyanex 572 and Alamine 336. The results showed that the addition of Alamine 336 to Cyanex 572 increased the extraction efficiency of LREEs and MREEs. The analysis suggested that Alamine 336 acted as a proton ion extractor and phase modifier for REECl2+ complexes.

Summary: Microbial communities are crucial for biogeochemical cycles, biomedicine, and biotechnological applications. While naturally arising communities are used in some processes, the design of synthetic microbial consortia for bio-based production has gained interest. A new computational approach, ASTHERISC, has been developed to design single-species multi-strain communities for maximizing thermodynamic driving force for product synthesis. This approach shows potential for improving microbial community design for chemical production.

Summary: This study focused on the separation and recovery of vanadium(IV), iron, and titanium from vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite leach solutions using P204 and P507 extractants. The optimal extraction conditions were determined based on speciation analysis, resulting in high extraction efficiencies for vanadium (94.21%), iron (3.45%), and titanium (5.32%). Further countercurrent extraction and stripping experiments were conducted, achieving desirable extraction efficiencies for vanadium (98.13%) and a high stripping efficiency for a vanadium-rich solution using sulfuric acid. The mechanism of synergistic extraction between P-O-H hydrogen ions and VO2+ was confirmed using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and molecular structure derivation. Additionally, impurity ions (Fe2+) were successfully separated and converted into qualified iron oxide pigment.

Summary: The study demonstrates that molecular self-assembly of n-dodecylamine borane in anhydrous THF forms core-shell aggregates, with NH2BH3 groups in the core and alkyl chains in the outer layer. However, the compound is unstable in the presence of moisture, hydrolyzing to produce water-soluble borates. Therefore, investigating the behavior and properties of C12AB should be conducted under anhydrous conditions.

Summary: This study presents a structural and thermodynamic analysis of uranium solvent extraction using modified tertiary amines. The results indicate that tertiary amines with longer or branched alkyl chains can adjust phase stability and uranium extraction by modifying the volume of polar species in the organic phase. The experiments confirm that this phenomenon is related to the self-assembly of tertiary amines into smaller reverse micelle-like aggregates for longer or branched alkyl chains. The smaller aggregates also suppress third phase formation by reducing attractive interactions between them. A thermodynamic analysis reveals that alkyl chains significantly influence the aggregate's curvature free energy.
