Anthropogenic activities have severely affected the quality of Qianling Lake, China, causing mud and sediment deposition, poor water quality, and degraded fish habitat. In some regions of the lake, fish habitat that was formerly dominant has disappeared completely. A few areas of desirable habitatpersist as a result of purposeful restoration actions, and these areas provide important conservation and restoration opportunities. In this study, the ecological conditions of Qianling Lale were assessed to identify hydrodynamic conditions, sediment deposition, and fish habitat suitability to recommend strategies for, improving and restoring, these areas. Two restoration strategies, flood flush and add an artificial island were proposed and modeled to predict the restoration effects. Simulation results showed that the restoration scheme add an artificial island' could improve spinibarbus (Spinibarbus sinensis Bleeker) habitat quality. The analysis also indicated that this restoration strategy could succeed in restoring the fish habitat under natural dynamic processes.

Identifying fish ecological risk patterns based on the effects of long-term dam operation schemes

Weiwei Yao, Ruidong An, Guoan Yu, Jia Li, Xiaoyi Ma

Summary: The study investigated the impact of a Trunk Dam on two fish species in the Kraal River, simulating the habitats and abundance under four different long-term dam operation scenarios. The results suggest a decrease in fish population with long-term river regulation, with varying levels of decline depending on the dam operation scenarios.

Using a fish entrainment model assistant in a reservoir operation in China

Meixia Bao, Pengcheng Li, Yu Han, Wenming Zhang, Yike Li, Weiwei Yao

Summary: This study examines the fish entrainment risk of the Dawei Reservoir operation in Sichuan, China, considering both intake and spillway operations. The results show that the fish entrainment risk is low under the intake operation schemes, but high under the spillway operation. The simulation results also indicate that the lowest risk occurs when two intakes are open and the reservoir water level is at 2,640 m, while the highest risk occurs when five intakes are open and the reservoir water level is at 2,670 m.

Stocking to offset negative effects of dam construction and balance the ecosystem

Weiwei Yao

Summary: An ecohydraulic model system was developed to evaluate the effects of dam construction and fish restoration strategies. The system included hydrodynamic, hydromorphology, habitat, and population models. The study focused on the Jiao-Mu River and predicted the effects of dam construction and fish stocking on fish habitat and population. The results showed that dam construction would decrease fish habitat quality, but fish stocking could compensate for this. The findings can help assess dam development plans and improve fish restoration success rates.

Summary: This study quantified the temporal-spatial variations of evapotranspiration (ET), gross primary productivity (GPP), and ecosystem-scale water use efficiency (WUE) in paddy (PF) and non-paddy field (NPF) over China from 2000 to 2021. The results showed that the annual ET in both PF and NPF presented an increasing trend from northwest to southeast of China. The annual GPP and WUE also exhibited spatial and temporal variations.

Summary: The phenomenon of fish entrainment in hydropower reservoirs was studied in the upper Columbia River, Canada. By combining fish density surveys with computational modeling, the risk of entrainment for different age groups of Kokanee salmon was evaluated. Results showed that age-0 Kokanee were more vulnerable to entrainment compared to age-1 Kokanee.

Ecohydraulic modelling to evaluate cascade dam construction impact and support fish habitat restoration

Qianqian Wang, Yu Han, Pengcheng Li, Wenming Zhang, Yihang Wang, Yuqian Xi, Weiwei Yao

Summary: An ecohydraulic model was proposed to evaluate the effects of cascade dam construction on the hydrological status and habitat quality of spawning sites in the Lancang River basin. Four spawning sites and two fish species were selected for simulation, with restoration strategies applied to reduce fragmentation of spawning habitats. The study highlighted the importance of investigating the Lancang River for information on hydropower development and habitat protection.
