Summary: The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma has decreased in patients infected with HCV and HBV thanks to antiviral drugs, but those with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis still face risk. Predictors of cancer in virus-free patients include comorbidities, liver inflammation, and non-invasive test results, allowing for stratification and surveillance. International guidelines recommend lifelong monitoring with ultrasound, and further research into more effective surveillance tools is needed for personalized management.

Summary: This study evaluated the characteristics of hepatitis B virus (HBV) biomarkers in patients with chronic hepatitis B and C (HBV/HCV) coinfection. The results showed that specific HBV biomarkers correlated with the active infection of HCV, and the levels of HBV biomarkers were altered in patients with HCV viremia.

Summary: Co-administration of direct acting antivirals (DAA) and entecavir for 12 weeks is suggested to prevent hepatitis B virus (HBV) virologic reactivation (HBVr) and clinical reactivation (CR) in patients with dual hepatitis C virus (HCV)/HBV infection.

Summary: This study examined the prevalence and trends of smoking among people living with HIV, HBV, or HCV, and found that infected individuals had a higher smoking rate and lower smoking cessation rate. Age, gender, education level, economic level, employment status, depression, and drug use were identified as factors related to smoking behavior among these infected people.

Summary: The EGF rs4444903 polymorphism does not significantly increase the risk of HBV/HCV, but is associated with increased risk of liver cirrhosis and HCC, particularly among Asians and Caucasians. Larger studies with diverse ethnic populations are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: Research findings suggest that gut barrier dysfunction may lead to liver exposure to bacterial products from the gut, promoting liver diseases such as hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma. This study investigated the association between biomarkers of gut barrier dysfunction and HCC risk in HBV/HCV carriers. The results showed that a doubling of antiflagellin IgA or LBP levels in the blood was associated with a significantly increased risk of HBV-related HCC, while other markers did not show the same association.

Summary: The study analyzed data from the National Blood Center of Lithuania from 2004 to 2018 and found a decreasing trend in residual risk of HBV, HCV and HIV transmission among blood donors. Despite the decrease, the current risk remains quite high, indicating the need for a population screening program for transfusion transmitted viruses.

Summary: Anthax is a global zoonotic disease, with Mongolia facing historical issues related to its public health and socio-economy. This study in Khuvsgul Province, the region with the highest anthrax incidence rate in Mongolia, found stable spatial-temporal patterns of livestock anthrax, clustered burial sites, and identified new hotspots in the northern region. The size of outbreaks appears to be influenced by the annual summer mean air temperature of the province, possibly due to its impact on permafrost freeze-thawing activity.

Summary: The study estimated the prevalence of HBV infection, susceptibility, and vaccine-induced immunity among the US population from 2013 to 2018. Non-US-born residents and men who have sex with men (MSM) were more likely to be infected with HBV, but had similar likelihood of vaccine-induced immunity. The prevalence of chronic hepatitis B in the US has remained unchanged at 0.3% since 1999.

Summary: During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, different vaccines have been used globally. This study compares the antibodies generated by mRNA vaccines, infection, and other types of vaccines. It shows that mRNA vaccines result in a better antibody breadth against viral variants compared to infection. Infection leads to variant-specific antibodies, while mRNA vaccination imprints responses towards the original virus strain. mRNA vaccines also stimulate robust germinal centers in lymph nodes, enhancing the immune response.
