Trace elements in early phase type 2 diabetes mellitus-A population-based study. The HUNT study in Norway

Differences in trace elements levels between individuals with type 2 diabetes and controls have been reported in several studies in various body fluids and tissues, but results have been inconsistent. In order to examine trace element levels in the early phase of type 2 diabetes, we investigated the association between whole blood levels of 26 trace elements and the prevalence of previously undiagnosed, screening-detected type 2 diabetes. The study was conducted as a case-control study nested within the third survey of the population-based Nord-Trondelag Health Study (HUNT3 Survey). Among participants without previously known diabetes, 128 cases of type 2 diabetes were diagnosed in people with a high diabetes risk score (FINDRISC >= 15), and frequency-matched for age and sex with 755 controls. Blood samples were analyzed by high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Associations between trace element levels and the prevalence of previously undiagnosed type 2 diabetes were evaluated with multivariable conditional logistic regression controlling for age, sex, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, education, income, smoking and family history of diabetes. The prevalence of previously undiagnosed type 2 diabetes increased across tertiles/quartiles for cadmium, chromium, iron, nickel, silver and zinc, and decreased with increasing quartiles of bromine (P-trend < 0.05). After corrections for multiple testing, associations for chromium remained significant (Q(trend) < 0.05), while associations for iron and silver were borderline significant. No associations were found for arsenic, boron, calcium, cesium, copper, gallium, gold, indium, lead, magnesium, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, rubidium, selenium, strontium, tantalum, thallium and tin. Our results suggest a possible role of bromine, cadmium, chromium, iron, nickel, silver and zinc in the development of type 2 diabetes. (C) 2016 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Summary: Estimates from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) can be influenced by inherited variation, population stratification, and indirect genetic effects. This study combines data from 178,086 siblings to generate population and within-family GWAS estimates for 25 phenotypes. The within-family estimates are smaller than population estimates for certain phenotypes and show differences in genetic correlations and Mendelian randomization analyses.

A fast linkage method for population GWAS cohorts with related individuals

Summary: Linkage analysis has been an important method for mapping disease-causing genes in families for decades. However, traditional linkage methods are computationally inefficient for larger datasets. In this study, we introduce Population Linkage, a novel application of Haseman-Elston regression, which improves computational efficiency by using modern methods for IBD segment detection and variance component estimation. We successfully detected known genetic signals for blood lipid traits in a large population sample and demonstrated the potential of linkage analysis for large-scale applications.

All-cause and cardiovascular mortality after hysterectomy and oophorectomy in a large cohort (HUNT2)

Summary: This study aimed to assess the association between hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in a Norwegian population. The results showed that hysterectomy was associated with increased all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, while bilateral oophorectomy was not significantly associated with mortality. Among women aged 52 and below, both procedures were associated with a twofold increased risk of cardiovascular mortality.

Summary: Previous Mendelian randomization (MR) studies suggest that educational attainment has beneficial effects on adult health outcomes. However, these estimates may be biased due to population stratification, assortative mating, and indirect genetic effects. Using both population and within-sibship MR approaches, this study provides evidence that genetic liability to educational attainment is associated with decreased BMI, cigarette smoking, and SBP, and potentially with mortality.

Role of fungal burden in risk stratification of HIV-negative patients with Pneumocystis pneumonia: A 12-year, retrospective, observational, multicenter cohort

Summary: This study aimed to explore the role of fungal burden in risk stratification of non-HIV-negative patients with Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP). The results showed that higher fungal burden was associated with a higher risk of 30-day mortality. The Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) could also improve the risk stratification. Comorbid cardiovascular disease, solid tumors, immunological disorders, premorbid corticosteroids, hypoxemia, abnormal leukocyte counts, low serum albumin, and C-reactive protein >100 were also independently associated with 30-day mortality.

The causal role of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 on anxiety and depression symptoms and life satisfaction: Mendelian randomisation analyses in the HUNT study

Summary: In this study, the researchers found that serum CRP levels may modestly increase symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as reduce life satisfaction. However, the causal role of IL-6 in these mental health outcomes was not supported by the findings. Therefore, the conclusions do not align with the recent suggestion that serum CRP may lower anxiety and depression symptoms.

Compared to avocado, papaya has a stronger potential for improving memory and learning, as well as reducing lipid peroxidation in various tissues.

A preliminary predictive model for selenium nutritional status in residents based on three selenium biomarkers

However, BALB/c mice did not show significant differences in fasting plasma selenoprotein P levels between the HFD and ND groups.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the protective effects of Vitamin E (Vit E) on manganese (Mn)-induced nigrostriatal system lesions. The results demonstrate that Vit E improves behavioral disorders, attenuates the loss of nigral dopaminergic neurons, and restores mitochondrial function. Additionally, the protective effect of Vit E may be associated with the upregulation of CHRM1 and KCNJ4 mRNA.

Summary: The dried blood spot (DBS) technology is useful for storing blood samples from wildlife, and this study developed methods for measuring several important elements in DBS and used them for health assessments of Galapagos land iguanas. Iodine status of school-aged children in the changing context of universal salt iodization program during 1997-2018 in Chongqing, China

Summary: The study illustrates the changes in iodized salt usage, goiter rate, and median urinary iodine concentration in school-aged children in Chongqing over the past 21 years. Adequate iodized salt consumption can eliminate iodine deficiency disorders in children, but excessive iodine intake from salt can lead to high urinary iodine excretion and even goiter. Continuous monitoring and adjustment of iodine fortification levels in household table salt is crucial.

Improvement of the cardiovascular effect of methyldopa by complexation with Zn(II): Synthesis, characterization and mechanism of action

Summary: The zinc coordination complex ZnMD, synthesized in this study, showed promising effects in treating hypertension and cardiac hypertrophy. It was more effective than the antihypertensive drug MD in reducing blood pressure and preventing myocardial hypertrophy. ZnMD also exhibited protective effects on the heart by reducing oxidative damage and regulating the expression of oxidative enzymes. These findings suggest that ZnMD has the potential to be developed as a therapeutic drug for hypertension and cardiac dysfunction.

Neurological study on the effect of CeNPs and/or La Cl3 on adult male albino rats

Summary: This study investigates the neuro effects of lanthanides on different brain areas in rats and finds that they can distribute and accumulate in various brain regions. Treatment with cerium nanoparticles or lanthanum causes a significant decrease in norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, and GABA, accompanied by a significant increase in 5-hydroxyl indoleacetic acid levels. Moreover, cerium nanoparticles exhibit high activity in scavenging free radicals.

This study suggests that this combination therapy may have a positive effect on fertility and decreasing the toxic effects of nanoparticles.
