The complementation group F of Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP-F) is rare in the Caucasian population, and usually devoid of neurological symptoms. We report two cases, both Caucasian, who exhibited progressive cerebellar ataxia, chorea, a mild subcortical frontal cognitive impairment, and in one case severe polyneuropathy. Brain MRI demonstrated cerebellar (2/2) and cortical (1/2) atrophy. Both patients had only mild sunburn sensitivity and no skin cancer. Mini-exome sequencing approach revealed in ERCC4, two heterozygous mutations, one of which was never described (c.580-584 + 1delCCAAGG, exon 3), in the first case, and an already reported homozygous mutation, in the second case. These cases emphasize that XP-F is a rare cause of recessive cerebellar ataxia and can in some cases clinically mimic Huntington's disease due to chorea and executive impairment. The association of ataxia, chorea, and sun hypersensitivity are major guidance for the diagnosis, which should not be missed, in order-to-prevent skin neoplastic complications. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Implementation of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanner dedicated to emergencies in cases of binocular diplopia: Impact on patient management

Marie Stoessel, Francois Lersy, Mylene Moris, Guillaume Bierry, Mathieu Anheim, Stephane Kremer, Sabrina Garnier-Kepka

Summary: This study evaluated the implementation of a dedicated MRI scanner for the management of patients with binocular diplopia in the emergency department. The results showed that the use of the MRI scanner improved the diagnostic performance of binocular diplopia and reduced patient's exposure to ionizing radiation without increasing turnaround time or emergency department length of stay.

Lung Tumor Growth Promotion by Tobacco-Specific Nitrosamines Involves the β2-Adrenergic Receptors-Dependent Stimulation of Mitochondrial REDOX Signaling

Saharnaz Sarlak, Claude Lalou, Ana Carolina B. Sant'Anna-Silva, Walid Mafhouf, Monica De Luise, Benoit Rousseau, Julien Izotte, Stephane Claverol, Didier Lacombe, Efterpi Nikitopoulou, Ming Yang, Marcus Oliveira, Christian Frezza, Giuseppe Gasparre, Hamid Reza Rezvani, Nivea Dias Amoedo, Rodrigue Rossignol

Summary: This study analyzes the effect of tobacco-specific nitrosamines on metabolic reprogramming in lung adenocarcinoma cells. The findings reveal that nicotine-derived nitrosamine ketone stimulates mitochondrial function, promoting lung tumor growth through a specific signaling pathway. Mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and Annexin A1 play key roles in tumor growth promotion.

Summary: This study reports the clinical and genetic results of a large cohort of patients with hereditary spastic paraplegia. A causative variant was found in 30.7% of the patients, with SPAST and SPG7 being the most frequently mutated genes. A two-step strategy combining gene panels and whole-exome sequencing is proposed to improve the diagnostic yield.

The first days of Type II-P core collapse supernovae in the gamma-ray range

Summary: Type II-P supernovae are the most common core-collapse supernovae that result from the explosions of red supergiant stars. They are potentially effective energetic particle accelerators and can produce gamma-ray signals through the interaction between energetic particles and the surrounding medium. We calculate the gamma-gamma opacity and discuss the time-dependent gamma-ray emissions from Type II-P supernovae. We find that upcoming gamma-ray observatories like the Cherenkov Telescope Array should be able to detect such supernovae in our Galaxy or in the Magellanic Clouds.

A Homozygous Missense Variant in PPP1R1B/DARPP-32 Is Associated With Generalized Complex Dystonia

Summary: A novel missense variant in the PPP1R1B gene was identified in a consanguineous family with generalized dystonia. The expression of PPP1R1B protein in movement control regions suggests its involvement in abnormal movements, making it a potential gene to be sequenced in patients with unexplained movement disorders.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the progression of nigrostriatal dopaminergic denervation (NSDD) in cerebellar multiple system atrophy (MSA-C) and evaluate its differentiation from idiopathic late-onset cerebellar ataxia (ILOCA). The results showed that rapid symptom worsening and NSDD existence and progression could predict the occurrence of MSA-C.

Summary: Recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi has been observed to emit very-high-energy gamma rays up to 1 month after its 2021 outburst, and the temporal profile of the emission is similar to lower-energy gamma rays, suggesting a common origin. These observations provide constraints on models of particle acceleration.

Summary: The study aimed to identify the physical processes behind gamma-ray emission around Westerlund 1 and understand the role of massive stellar clusters in Galactic cosmic ray acceleration. Using data from H.E.S.S., researchers detected large-scale gamma-ray emission with a shell-like structure near Westerlund 1. Despite the lack of clear correlation with gas clouds, the study concluded that Westerlund 1 is likely the main source of the gamma-ray emission in the region.

Summary: This study presents the first results of a search for dark matter (DM) particle annihilation signals in the central region of the Milky Way using observations from the Inner Galaxy Survey conducted with the H.E.S.S. array of telescopes. No significant gamma-ray excess is found, and exclusion limits on the annihilation cross section are set assuming different DM density profiles. The constraints obtained are the strongest in the TeV DM mass range so far.

Xenopus: An in vivo model for studying skin response to ultraviolet B irradiation

Joudi El Mir, Sandrine Fedou, Nadine Theze, Fanny Morice-Picard, Muriel Cario, Hussein Fayyad-Kazan, Pierre Thiebaud, Hamid-Reza Rezvani

Summary: Ultraviolet B (UVB) in sunlight causes skin damage, such as wrinkles, photoaging, and skin cancer. This study investigated the impact of UVB on skin physiology using Xenopus laevis as an in vivo model. The expression levels of genes related to DNA repair and photolyases were found in all stages of embryonic development and adult tissues. UVB irradiation led to decreased CPD levels, increased apoptotic cells, thickening of the epidermis, and increased dendricity of melanocytes in Xenopus embryos. Blue light exposure effectively activated photolyases, resulting in quick CPD removal and decreased apoptotic cells. This study suggests that Xenopus is a suitable alternative model for studying UVB-induced skin responses.
