'Sunshine' (Reg. No. CV-1129, PI 674741) hard white winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was developed by the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station and released in August 2014 through a marketing agreement with the Colorado Wheat Research Foundation. In addition to researchers at Colorado State University, USDA-ARS researchers at Manhattan, KS, St. Paul, MN, and Pullman, WA participated in its development. Sunshine was developed with the objective of making available a hard white winter wheat cultivar with improved grain yield and straw strength and similar milling and baking qualities to 'Snowmass' hard white winter wheat. Both Snowmass and Sunshine are grown in Colorado and adjacent areas of the west-central Great Plains in an identity-preserved marketing system whereby a grower premium is paid through a contract with a flour milling company. Sunshine was developed with a modified-bulk breeding method from the cross KS01HW152-6/HV9W02-267W made in 2005 at Fort Collins, CO. Following two generations (F-2 and F-3) of bulk-population evaluation, Sunshine was selected as an F-3:4 line in July 2009, assigned experimental line number CO09W293, and evaluated in replicated yield trials from 2012 to 2014 in eastern Colorado.

Winter annual grass control and crop safety in quizalofop-resistant wheat cultivars

Summary: To control the negative impact of winter annual grass species on winter wheat yield, researchers generated winter wheat lines resistant to the herbicide quizalofop p-ethyl (QPE) through mutagenesis. Field trials demonstrated that QPE effectively controlled winter annual grass species with acceptable crop safety in QPE-resistant winter wheat cultivars.

Identification and validation of a QTL for spikelet number on chromosome arm 6BL of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Andrew Katz, Patrick Byrne, Scott Reid, Sarah Bratschun, Scott Haley, Stephen Pearce

Summary: To ensure food security for the growing global population, it is crucial to increase the yield of staple crops like wheat. This study identified and validated a quantitative trait locus (QTL) on chromosome 6BL that controls spikelet number in wheat. Despite the presence of genetic interactions with other loci, genotypes with more superior alleles consistently showed higher spikelet numbers. This research lays the groundwork for the positional cloning of the genetic variant underlying the QTL, enhancing our understanding of spikelet number determination in wheat.

Does agroecosystem management mitigate historic climate impacts on dryland winter wheat yields?

Grace L. Miner, Catherine E. Stewart, Merle F. Vigil, David J. Poss, Scott D. Haley, Sally M. Jones-Diamond, R. Esten Mason

Summary: Global studies on the climate effects on crop yields provide valuable insights on world food supplies, but lack the resolution to identify local management effects. This study focused on winter wheat yields in eastern Colorado and found that precipitation from April to June was predictive of yields, but temperatures had a larger impact, with extreme maximum temperatures in June having the most detrimental effects.

Agronomic and quality impact of a shortened translocation for wheat streak mosaic virus resistance

Mary J. Guttieri, Robert L. Bowden, Guorong Zhang, Scott Haley, Katherine Frels, Gary L. Hein, Katherine W. Jordan

Summary: Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) is a mite-vectored virus that affects wheat production. The resistance source, Wsm1, is carried on a translocation from Thinopyrum intermedium. A shorter recombinant of the translocation, named rec213, was evaluated for its agronomic performance in 10 yield trials. The translocation had no effect on heading date, slightly reduced plant height, and had a positive effect on grain yield. Protein concentration and gluten quality were not affected by the translocation, but there was a slight reduction in protein quality scores. Improved marker assays were developed to facilitate the use of the rec213 Wsm1 trait in breeding programs.

Summary: In this study, three QTLs for adult-plant resistance to stripe rust in wheat were identified, and a candidate gene for one of the QTLs was further located. The findings provide favorable genes and markers for breeding programs targeting stripe rust resistance in wheat.

QTL Analysis of Yield and End-Use Quality Traits in Texas Hard Red Winter Wheat

Mehmet Dogan, Zhen Wang, Mustafa Cerit, Jorge L. L. Valenzuela-Antelo, Smit Dhakal, Chenggen Chu, Qingwu Xue, Amir M. H. Ibrahim, Jackie C. C. Rudd, Amy Bernardo, Paul St. Amand, Guihua Bai, Hongbin Zhang, Shuyu Liu

Summary: Genetic dissection of complex traits in wheat using QTL analysis identified 30 QTL regions associated with yield, end-use quality traits, and agronomic traits. Some of these QTLs were consistent across different chromosomes and showed pleiotropic effects. Three novel QTLs were discovered, along with three major QTLs in colocalization with known genes. Epistasis was also detected. This study provides valuable information for wheat breeding programs through marker-assisted selection.
