An integrated seismic, borehole petrophysical and geochemical data constrained 1D and 2D basin model study is conducted for the Beni Suef basin (Western Desert, Egypt) to enhance the understanding of the Cretaceous plays while demonstrating how basin modeling can be used to reduce exploration risk and improve exploration success. The Cretaceous petroleum systems consist of two major source rocks (the Upper Cretaceous limestone of Abu Roash F'' member, and Lower Cretaceous shales of Kharita and Alam El-Bueib formations), five reservoirs (Cretaceous sandstones of Abu Roash A, E & G'', Baharyia and Kharita formations), three seals (Lower Cretaceous and Upper Cretaceous shales of Kharita and Bahariya formations and fine grained limestones of the Abu Roash Formation), and vertical source mixing migration pathways owing to vertical faults resulting from four episodes of elastic crustal extension and above trap lateral migration. The entrapment style of the generated hydrocarbons and its roles on the charge and migration process in the Cretaceous reservoir rocks were determined from the seismic interpretation. Three episodes of uplift erosion (Early Cretaceous, Late Cretaceous-Paleocene, and Paleogene-Neogene) have occurred in the basin and have increased exploration risk in some areas by breaching the integrity of the seal. Migration from the source rock into the trap is mainly vertical migration. However, in areas where the hydrocarbons have escaped through the faults at the boundaries of the basin, migration in the layers above the trap is mainly lateral. The hydrocarbons generated are predominantly oil. The Lower Cretaceous shales of the Kharita and Alam El-Bueib formations exhibit good thickness, total organic content (TOC), kerogen type (mixed type II and III), and maturation.

Unveiling geothermal potential sites along Gulf of Suez (Egypt) using an integrated geoscience approach

Mohamed I. Abdel-Fattah, El-Arabi H. Shendi, Mona F. Kaiser, Sara M. Abuzied

Summary: The geothermal assessment in Gulf of Suez using an integrated approach involving remote sensing, GIS, and geophysical methods helped in identifying promising geothermal sites. By analyzing and integrating multiple datasets, a Geothermal Potential Model was developed to pinpoint potential reservoirs. Seismic interpretation was key in determining subsurface faults influencing geothermal reservoirs, providing a powerful technique for development planning in the region.

Lithofacies classification and sequence stratigraphic description as a guide for the prediction and distribution of carbonate reservoir quality: A case study of the Upper Cretaceous Khasib Formation (East Baghdad oilfield, central Iraq)

Mohamed Abdel-Fattah, Adnan Q. Mahdi, Mustafa A. Theyab, John D. Pigott, Zakaria M. Abd-Allah, Ahmed E. Radwan

Summary: The lithofacies of the Khasib Formation in the East Baghdad oilfield have been studied using a sequence stratigraphic framework and multivariate statistical methods. This helps to define the reservoir geometry and petrophysical characteristics of the Khasib reservoirs. The highstand systems tract of the Khasib Formation shows the best reservoir characteristics in terms of thickness, porosity, and hydrocarbon saturation.

Summary: This study focuses on the petrographical and petrophysical properties of the upper Miocene Abu Madi Formation in the Nile Delta, confirming the reservoir depositional environment and quality. The research reveals that the sandstone reservoirs in this region exhibit excellent hydraulic properties, while finer-grained sandstones present lower reservoir quality.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the carbonate source rocks in the Ajeel oilfield in Iraq, including organic geochemical characteristics, palynofacies analysis, and basin modeling. The results show that these potential source rocks have good quality and have been the main source of petroleum in the Mesopotamian Basin.

Summary: This study analyzed the mineral composition, total organic carbon (TOC), and total sulfur (TS) content of black shale deposits in the Paleogene successions in the Beni Suef area, Egypt. It determined the organic matter, thermal maturation, and kerogen type using Rock-Eval pyrolysis. The results showed differences in the composition and conditions of the analyzed samples, indicating the potential for natural gas generation.

Summary: Basement rocks, such as fractured or weathered granites, are significant unconventional oil and gas reservoirs found globally. This study focused on geophysically evaluating the petroleum potential of the basement rocks in the Rabeh East field in the Gulf of Suez Basin. The analysis revealed promising petrophysical characteristics, indicating the possibility of long-term petroleum exploration in this area.

Summary: The evaluation of the Turonian AR/G'' reservoirs in the Heba field, located in the Western Desert of Egypt, is a crucial aspect of hydrocarbon exploration and development in the region. The study identified an ENE-WSW faulted anticline structure and proposed two oil zones with good reservoir quality, suggesting the potential for productive hydrocarbon reservoirs in the area.

Hydrocarbon potential and reservoir characteristics of incised-valley transgressive sandstones: A case study of the Messinian gas reservoirs (Nile Delta Basin, Egypt)

Mohamed I. Abdel-Fattah, Hamdan A. Hamdan, Mohammad Abdelfattah Sarhan

Summary: This study assesses the reservoir properties of incised-valley sandstones in the Nile Delta Basin gas fields. The findings show that extensional faults played a significant role in the deposition of the sandstones, and the northernmost portion of the study area exhibits the most promising location for gas exploitation. The sandstones exhibit a fining upward trend with a relatively clean composition, and petrophysical investigations indicate favorable reservoir conditions. The presence of well-connected channels within the estuarine sandstones enhances reservoir productivity.

Lithofacies Controls on Hydrocarbon Generation Potentiality of the Syn-Rift Late Cretaceous Rakopi Deltaic Facies in the North-Eastern Offshore Part of Taranaki Basin, New Zealand

Mahmoud Leila, Ahmed A. Radwan, Mohamed I. Abdel-Fattah

Summary: The Taranaki Basin in New Zealand is a promising area for hydrocarbon exploration and development, particularly in the Rakopi Formation where coal and mudstone lithofacies have the potential to generate oil. The organic carbon in these lithofacies originated from oxygenated bottom water and was preserved due to swift burial. The coal is less mature and contains a mixture of different macerals, while the mudstone lithofacies are enriched in liptodetrinite. Biomarkers in both the coal and mudstone extracts confirm the presence of oil generation in the Rakopi Formation.

A multi-disciplinary approach for trap identification in the Southern Meleiha Area, North Western Desert, Egypt: integrating seismic, well log, and fault seal analysis

Taha Rabea El-Qalamoshy, Mohamed I. Abdel-Fattah, Mohamed Reda, Tharwat H. Abdelhafeez, Salah Shebl Saleh Azzam, Mohamed Mosaad

Summary: This study examines the geological structure and hydrocarbon potential of the southern Meleiha concession. Through detailed investigations and seismic interpretation, hydrocarbon resources in the deep, mid, and shallow target zones of the Khatatba-Ras Qattara and Bahariya layers were identified. The study area exhibits abundant normal faults and structural closures, and careful consideration is needed to prevent fault leakage when selecting drilling locations. The western half of the area shows more potential net pay zones compared to the eastern and southeastern regions. A total of 37 potential leads were found in the geological structure of the deep-target Khatatba-Ras Qattara.
