Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a global disease that affects the gastrointestinal tract and also has an impact on the mental and emotional well-being of patients. Despite medical advancements, only a third of diagnosed patients achieve short to medium-term remission. Therefore, some patients might resort to complementary and alternative approaches to manage their symptoms. This study reviews the efficacy of these approaches and proposes a patient-centric clinical care model and recommendations.

Summary: This study found that the input of an expert gastrointestinal pathologist significantly impacted the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) presented at multidisciplinary team conferences. The histopathologic re-interpretation led to changes in diagnosis and modifications in medical and surgical management.

Summary: This study found that the risk of mental health issues is associated with higher healthcare costs in individuals with IBD. Providing integrated psychological care to those at risk for mental health issues can significantly reduce costs, particularly by decreasing visits to emergency departments. Further research is needed to determine the optimal care to reduce costs.

Summary: Patients with chronic illness, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), are at increased risk for posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms related to medical trauma. Approximately one-third of IBD patients may experience significant PTS symptoms, and certain demographic groups are at higher risk. Patients with higher PTS symptoms are less likely to be in remission and may utilize more outpatient gastrointestinal services.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. Bowel ultrasound is a non-invasive, well-tolerated, and cost-effective modality for managing IBD patients.

Summary: IBD patients have suboptimal vaccination rates, with factors such as immunosuppressant use, older age, and physician recommendations positively impacting vaccination rates. Lack of vaccine-related knowledge and awareness of the need for vaccination are the main reasons for vaccine hesitancy among patients and physicians. Education is the only identified intervention for improving vaccination rates.

Summary: Our study establishes a quantitative integrated taxonomy that defines the cellular landscape of monogenic IBD gene expression across 102 genes with high and moderate penetrance. We illustrate distinct cellular networks, highlight expression profiles across understudied cell types, and define genotype phenotype associations. The taxonomy integrates genetic, clinical, and multi-omic data, providing a basis for genomic diagnostics and testable hypotheses for disease functions and treatment responses.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic inflammatory disease without definitive pharmacological treatment. The unclear etiology limits the development of new drugs, leading to high rates of refractory patients. Natural products, such as coumarins, show potential as alternative therapies in IBD.

Summary: Mitochondria play a crucial role in maintaining cellular functions and are involved in various cellular processes. Dysfunction of mitochondria has been linked to complex disorders, including inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The impact of mitochondrial dysfunction on IBD, including its role in intestinal mucosa, immune cell populations, mucosal repair, microbiota-brain-gut axes, and the development of colitis-associated colorectal cancer, is discussed in this review.

Summary: A SATI-Q questionnaire was developed and validated to assess patient satisfaction with care in early inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Findings indicate that psychosocial care and information on IBD medication, diet, and future perspectives should be improved for recently diagnosed IBD patients.
