Summary: This study introduced a convenient nickel-catalyzed protocol for the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction using a simple mixture of Ni(II) and unfunctionalized beta-cyclodextrin in water. The environmentally friendly and cost-efficient method allows the synthesis of biaryls from arylboronic acids and various aryl halides. The catalyst can be recycled for multiple runs with only a small decrease in catalytic activity.

Summary: The new catalytic system using Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O as catalyst and a pincer pyrrole-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene as ligand showed high efficiency in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of aryl iodides with arylboronic acids, yielding high isolated yields of coupling products in short reaction times. The system worked well with aryl iodides bearing electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups and arylboronic acids with electron-donating groups, while steric effects were observed for both aryl iodides and arylboronic acids.

Summary: Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-couplings (SMRs) are the most practical method for constructing C-C bonds, especially for biaryls. However, current protocols require excess organoboron coupling partners (1.5-3.0 equiv.), which is a major disadvantage. A new chiral oxazoline-containing precatalyst, the palladacyclic 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)acenaphthoimidazol-2-ylidene (AnIPr), was designed to overcome this limitation and enable the synthesis of bulky tri-ortho-substituted biaryls, ternaphthalenes, and diarylanthracenes using equimolar organoborons and aryl bromides in the Pd-catalyzed SMR. The method shows excellent compatibility with various functional groups and heterocycles, making it adaptable for synthesizing useful ligands.

Summary: A comparison study of mono- and bisphosphine ligands in Ni-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions revealed that monophosphines exhibit higher reactivity, particularly with electronically deactivated and sterically hindered substrates. Mechanistic experiments showed that monoligated (P1Ni) species accelerate the organometallic steps of the catalytic cycle, while bisligated (P2Ni) species prevent off-cycle reactions and catalyst poisoning by heterocyclic motifs. These findings provide guidelines for ligand selection against challenging substrates and future ligand design tailored to the mechanistic demands of Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions.

Summary: Aryl fluorosulfates are versatile building blocks in organic synthesis and have gained increasing attention in SuFEx click chemistry. They can be easily prepared from phenols using low-cost sulfuryl fluoride as a sulfonyl fluoride provider. They have been used as less toxic and more atom economical alternatives to triflates in numerous cross-coupling reactions. This review summarizes the recent advances and developments in utilizing aryl fluorosulfates as electrophilic partners in cross-coupling reactions.

Summary: The synthesis and characterization of phenoxy(imine) iron(II) alkyl precatalysts for C(sp2)-C(sp3) Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction is reported. This method utilizes mild alkoxide bases and nonpolar solvents to achieve high efficiency C(sp2)-C(sp3) bond formation with various aryl boronic esters and alkyl bromides. The study also highlights the compatibility of the precatalysts with base-sensitive functionality and the role of boronate intermediates in transmetalation.

Summary: Stereospecific Csp(3) Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling simplifies the synthesis of stereochemically complex small molecules, but current methods are not compatible with complex building blocks commonly found in natural products and other complex targets. This study presents a method for embedding the alpha-methyl-beta-hydroxyl motif within stereochemically defined secondary alkyl boronic ester building blocks, allowing for stereospecific cross-coupling. The use of beta-aryloxysilyl groups addresses the decrease in reactivity and side reactions associated with beta-oxygen-containing Csp(3) boronic esters. Mechanistic studies reveal the activation of a dihydroxysiloxaborolate as a transmetalation partner in a stereospecific process that retains configuration.

Summary: A cobalt-catalyzed method for the C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling of aryl boronic esters and alkyl bromides was developed, with cobalt-ligand combinations being assessed through high-throughput experimentation. The use of cobalt(II) sources with trans-N,N'-dimethylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine (DMCyDA, L-1) resulted in optimal yield and selectivity. The transformation allowed for diverse steric and electronic properties on the aryl boronate nucleophile as well as various levels of branching and synthetically valuable functionality on the electrophile, with radical trap experiments supporting the formation of electrophile-derived radicals during catalysis.
